Flow Chart
How is pet food produced?
Typical raw materials used in pet food processing include grain meal, vegetable
proteins, minerals and vitamins, and in some cases meat or fish meal and fresh
meat. The dry material enters the preconditioner+ and undergoes steam hydration.
The blender mixes the ingredients and ensures that the steam, moisture and
ingredients are mixed properly. Pretreatment produces partial gelatinization of
the starch and structure of the polymer. The parboiled mixture is then fed to a
twin-screw extruder where shear, internal temperature, pressure, moisture and
residence time are precisely controlled to achieve optimal starch gelatinization
without loss of food quality. At different processing stages, liquid or steam
can be injected through ports in the extruder barrel. Vent packing can be used
for degassing at this stage.
Pet food production line production process
1. Mix
The mixing process is a key process in pet food production. The basic process is
to weigh raw materials of different weights according to the formula, then pour
them into the crusher for crushing, and then temporarily store all the raw
materials in the storage silo. Then all the ingredients are ready and blended in
a blender.
2. squeeze
Extrusion is a high-temperature, short-time heat treatment process. It not only
reduces the degradation of food nutrients and improves protein and starch
digestibility, but also destroys anti-nutrients and microorganisms. Dry pet food
in round, triangular, flower-shaped, bone-shaped and other shapes can be
produced through different molds (templates) of the feed extruder. In pet food
production, fat is often added to improve the palatability of the pet food,
which is done during the conditioning process. Additionally, in order to give
pet food tablets different colors, manufacturers often add pigmented water to
the extrusion chamber.
3. Dry
The drying part is mainly used to remove moisture from puffed pet food. The
extruded material has a soft texture and a moisture content of 20-30%. After
drying, the moisture of the finished product is controlled at 8%~10%, which can
ensure the storage of the materials within a certain period of time.
4. Add grease
Oil is the best source of energy, so 2%-40% oil can be added to the formula
according to the pet's growth needs. We recommend that the fat content in the
formula, i.e. the total oil content in the extruder, should be kept within 12%.
If the oil content is required to exceed 12%, the hardness of the particles will
be significantly reduced. If the extruded material needs to contain more than
12% oil, it is recommended to add oil after drying. Can be used under normal
pressure or vacuum spraying, depending on the amount of oil added. Exterior
spray will give the pet food tablets a more attractive appearance. In addition
to oil, some powdered attractants are also sprayed to increase the palatability
of pet feed.
5. Cooling and screening
The main function of the cooling section is to cool the dried materials from
high temperature to near room temperature and take away part of the moisture.
Additionally, substandard food tablets will be separated from qualified food
products during this process.

Main Equipment List
I. Flour Mixer or Ribbon Mixer
The raw materials, such as grains, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, are
combined and mixed evenly in a mixing machine to create a homogenous blend.
II. Screw Conveyor or Scraper Conveyor
The mixed materials are transferred to the extruder using a conveyor, such as a
screw conveyor or a Scraper Conveyor
III. Double Screw Extruder
The core component of the production line, the extruder processes the mixed
materials by applying heat, pressure, and mechanical shearing. This causes the
materials to undergo various physicochemical changes, resulting in the formation
of a dough-like mass. The extruder then pushes this mass through a die, creating
the desired shape and size of the pet food.
IV. Vibrating Sifter
Vibrating Sifter is a conveyor. It uses to convey the raw material to next
equipment, and at the same time, it sifts to prevent the raw materials sticking
together.
V. Air Conveyor
Air Conveyor is responsible to convey the materials to the next equipment. There
equipped with a blower to blow the materials.
VI. Multi-layer Roaster
The extruded pet food is then passed through a drying system, such as a
multi-layer dryer or a fluidized bed dryer, to remove excess moisture and
achieve the desired texture.
VII. Flavoring Machine
To enhance the palatability of the pet food, a flavoring system can be employed.
This may involve spraying liquid flavors, oils, or powders onto the cooled pet
food to make it more appealing to pets.
