What is Discord?

Discord⭷ is a messaging app for big groups (like STAR!).

DIscord's left sidebar has group chats, called channels.

The right side displays the messages in your currently-selected channel or
direct message conversation.

Note: Some people find Discord's web interface difficult to use on a touch
screen. If you experience that, you may want to try the Touch-Friendliness for
Discord extension (Chrome, Firefox, Opera).

   How do I join the STAR Discord?

 * Create or log into your Discord account.

 * Go to discord.ritstar.com⭷.

 * Click the button to join the server.

   Discord also has mobile apps for Android⭷ and iOS⭷,

   and desktop apps for Windows⭷, MacOS⭷, and Linux⭷.

   How do I set my display name?

   Regardless of our Discord username, we ask that your display name on the STAR
   Discord include whatever name you go by for real (whether that's your legal
   name or another name). So something like “Malcolm Reynolds” or “Mal
   ‘Browncoat’ Reynolds” would both be fine, but “browncoat420” would not.

   To change your display name on desktop/web:

 * In the left sidebar, select the drop-down menu next to the “Space-Time
   Adventures at RIT” heading.

 * Select “Change Nickname”.

 * Enter your new display name in the dialog that appears (note it cannot be
   longer than 32 characters).

 * Select “Save” in the dialog to save your new nickname.

   To change your display name on Android:

 * Slide out the left navigation drawer.

 * Select the “⋮” menu next to the “Space-Time Adventures at RIT” heading.

 * Select “Change Nickname”.

 * Enter your new display name in the dialog that appears (note it cannot be
   longer than 32 characters).

 * Select “Save” in the dialog to save your new nickname.

   What are channels?

   Channels are the specific group chat rooms listed in the left sidebar in
   Discord (each preceded with a “#”). STAR uses channels for a few purposes:

   Fandom channels (such as #dc-hall-of-justice, #marvel-shield-hq, and
   #stevens-universe)

   For discussing anything and everything related to those fandoms.

   (Note: Some fandom channels have their own spoiler policies.)

   Committee channels (such as #book-club, #pr-design, and #webmasters)

   Used for STAR groups to interact outside of in-person meetings.

   You can also chat with the group without committing to meetings.

   (Note: Temporary committee channels are often created for planning special
   events, and then archived after the events end.)

   Creative channels (such as #costume-department and #workshop)

   Places to discuss projects you're working on.

   A few other club channels also exist:

 * #announcements - for general STAR annoucements and other news

 * #introduce-yourself - where you can say hi and let us know what you're about

 * #general - for socializing and planning things with your fellow STARites

 * #suggestions - where you can suggest ways to improve STAR

 * #tech-support - for getting help with any of the tech. STAR uses (or any
   issues a member might be able to help you with)

 * #off-topic - for anything that does not fit in another channel

   How do I join a channel?

   You are automatically in every channel you can access on Discord.

   If you hid channels in the past:

 * In the left sidebar, select the drop-down menu next to the “Space-Time
   Adventures at RIT” heading.

 * Select “Show Muted Channels”.

 * Muted channels should now be visible in your sidebar, and you can unmute them
   if you so desire.

   If you cannot access a channel, and you think you should be able to, ask a
   member of the Bridge Crew.

   How do I leave a channel?

   You cannot leave channels on Discord, however, if you do not want to receive
   notifications for a particular channel (for instance, a channel for a fandom
   you are not in, or trying to avoid spoilers), you can mute it, and you can
   have Discord hide your muted channels.

   To mute a channel:

 * In the left sidebar, right-click the channel you want to mute.

 * Select the checkbox to “Mute [channel name] ☐”.

   To hide your muted channels:

 * In the left sidebar, select the drop-down menu next to the “Space-Time
   Adventures at RIT” heading.

 * Select “Hide Muted Channels”.

 * Muted channels should now be removed from your sidebar.

How do Discord polls work?

Bridge Crew (or members) will sometimes make polls on Discord with options
labeled with emoji.

Poll options are usually identified with the :one:, :two:, :three:, etc. emoji,
but sometimes other ones are used.

To vote, just emoji react⭷ with the emoji corresponding to the option you want
to vote for (or click the emoji button if it is already present).

How do I hide spoilers?

To hide text behind a spoiler block, just surround it with double pipes. You
should also precede the spoiler with the work being spoiled so people know
before they click.

e.g., “(Star Wars IV) ||Luke uses the Force.||” becomes...

Click on a spoiler block to reveal the spoiler text.

How do I get a new channel added?

If you want a new channel added to the STAR Discord for a particular topic or
fandom, you can ask about it in #suggestions and emoji react to it with a
:thumbsup: emoji. If at least 7 people :thumbsup: the request, the Bridge Crew
will discuss adding the channel at an upcoming Bridge Crew meeting. (You can
check the STAR Calendar to see when the next Bridge Crew meeting will be.)
