THEN AND NOW

NITRO EDITION 46

December 2022

The first edition of NiTRO was published in June 2016 in an environment of
government policy change in both research and higher education in which the
creative arts sector was conspicuous by their absence in the discussions. With
this in mind, NiTRO was created to provide a platform for creative artists
practicing in academia to add their voices to the conversation. Forty six
editions later, over 500 contributing authors have shared their perspectives of
the sector, their experiences of teaching, research and life within academia and
their hopes for the future.

In this edition of NiTRO, my last as editor, we invited some past contributors
to revisit their original articles – to update on how projects and thinking may
have evolved in the intervening period. Do we still experience and expect future
“neglect” or have we moved to a more equitable plane? How have projects
described in their initial stages developed and what legacies might they have
left?

We also include a special feature on the recent DDCA Forum that took place in
Melbourne on 24 November 2022.

Welcome from the President: A year of transition
Craig Batty

For many, 2022 has been a year of transition. Whether moving into new roles or
university structures, new (or extended) forms of teaching and learning,
different research and research training landscapes, not to mention refreshed
national governance and priorities, many of our DDCA members will remember 2022
as the year where changes brought about by COVID-19 started to settle in.

SPECIAL FEATURE: DDCA 2022 FORUM UPDATE

On 24 November 2022, the DDCA held its annual forum for member representatives
in Melbourne.

Invited speakers, Justin O’Connor, Tully Barnett and Julian Meyrick kicked off
discussion with a presentation on the current creative arts landscape, followed
by the DDCA AGM and a strategic discussion on the future direction and
operations for DDCA led by Diana Newport Peace from Outside Opinion who
presented findings from an ongoing consultation with members that DDCA has
commissioned.

We include the following articles to give NiTRO readers a flavour of the day’s
events.

The Reset Collective and cultural rights

For those following the intensifying links between the economy, equality,
sustainability and democracy deficit (clue: problems in the first three, create
problems in the fourth), the absence of culture as a domain of serious policy
attention is startling.

Explainer: What are non-traditional research outputs, and why do they matter?

With the Federal Government pausing the next Excellence in Research for
Australia (ERA) round, now is a good time to consider the value, and growing
influence, of non-traditional research outputs.

Building dignity: Human-centred design and social conscience in design studio
outlines
Samantha Donnelly

Recent design studio curriculums in architecture schools reflect a significant
shift towards projects focused on socially conscious design and humanitarian
challenges … recognising that sustainability is not enough and that the design
of built environments must encompass an expanded ethical, political, and social
position towards regenerative place-making that responds to a world in crisis.

Transformations on Country: the ANU SOAD Environment Studio
Amanda Stuart, Aidan Hartshorn & Kate M Murphy

In 2015, The Australian National University’s School of Art and Design’s
Environment Studio launched a unique field-based program, The Balawan Elective,
honourably named with guidance and permissions of the First Nations community on
Yuin Country, after their culturally significant mountain Balawan … Seven years
on, much has come from these cherished relationships.

Ian Haig

The corporate university
Ian Haig

For some years now, I’ve taught a course called Pop & Trash … It’s always struck
me as entirely odd that I teach a course that attempts to critique such
constructed cultural hierarchies, and the next day I need to report to my
university my ERA outputs based on the same outdated and outmoded cultural
hierarchies and notions of impact.

Scrying, not crying
Jen Webb

In 2018 I wrote a piece for NiTRO subtitled ‘Are we there yet?’, tracing some of
the practical and institutional effects of the Dawkins reforms that folded art
schools and other creative teaching programs into universities … Forward
(almost) five years, and I am again taking the pulse and trying to read some of
the signs.

Gazing back and looking forward: An extended interview with Barb Bolt
Barb Bolt & Jenny Wilson

Professor Barb Bolt is well known here and overseas for her work in creative
arts research and particularly the creative PhD.  Now that she has stepped away
from the university “day job” we took the opportunity to get her perspective of
the past and current state of play in tertiary creative arts in this extended
Q&A with NiTRO Editor Jenny Wilson.

An Indigenous voice in design: Six years of solid impact ... Looking back and
connecting the dots
Russell Kennedy

In 2016 I wrote an article for NiTRO titled “Styling Australia’s New Visual

features of Indigenous iconography into design without denigrating or
disrespecting the original owners and creators.

In June 2016, we launched the first issue of NiTRO and it is hard to believe

WHY SUBSCRIBE?

Creative arts disciplines make up a significant component of the university
staff and student population, yet we lack a vehicle to share common experiences
and issues.

NiTRO provides a platform for creative artists practicing in academia to
contribute to informed discussion about issues and activities relating to
practice, research and teaching taking place within the university sector.

With details of events, conferences, research resources, and articles from guest
contributors and creative artists working in DDCA member institutions,
subscribing to NiTRO keeps you up to date with the what, why and when of
university based creative arts.

Subscription is free and open to artists, educators, policymakers, and anyone
interested in creative arts research and tertiary education.

WHY DO WE ASK THESE QUESTIONS?

There is no accurate information collected on the number or type of artists
practicing in the university sector. To help DDCA to collect this data and
ensure that our site reflects our audience, we ask subscribers to complete five
questions at registration.  This information will be used by DDCA only to
indicate categories of subscribers. No individual data will be used or shared
with third parties.
