Massive storm packing snow, ice, and sleet threatens parts of Midwest and South

More than 100 million in at least 25 states are under winter weather alerts from
Mexican border to New England, with "a corridor of heavy ice" expected to
accumulate from Texas through the Ohio River Valley, Natl. Weather Service says

Storm has already dropped heavy snow as it lumbers east, including 20 inches in
Colorado Springs and more than a foot in parts of Illinois and Indiana

Portions of central U.S. should brace for "several rounds of winter weather"
through tomorrow, before the "prolonged" storm shifts to inner Northeast, Natl.
Weather Service says

Storm's impact could be felt through Saturday afternoon in Texas, where utility
officials are reassuring residents that the electrical grid is better prepared
for winter weather than it was a year ago, when weekslong ice-related outages
left 256 dead, many from hypothermia

Texas officials say outages from icy power lines and damaged trees are still
possible, and more than 45K are without power in the state, according to
PowerOutage.US; lights are off for total of nearly 100K across more than a dozen
states amid the storm

Storm is also hammering travel: Today is worst day for flight cancellations in
past year, with roughly 4,000 flights called off as of this morning, according
to data from FlightAware

White House says it's no longer describing potential Russian invasion of Ukraine
as "imminent"

WH Press Secy. Jen Psaki suggests the word sent an unintended message when
officials used it, saying it implied Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin had made
decision to attack Ukraine

"The vast majority of times I've talked about it, we said he could invade at any
time...That's true," Pskai says, but notes, "We still don't know that he's made
a decision"

Psaki's description of an attack as "imminent" drew anger in Kyiv, with
Ukrainian officials saying it could cause panic and economic turmoil

Meantime, Pres. Biden has approved new U.S. troops to Eastern Europe to show
support to NATO allies feeling threatened by Russia's military moves near
Ukraine

Roughly 2,000 troops will deploy from U.S. to Poland and Germany "in next few
days," Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby says; another 1,000 U.S. troops
currently in Germany will go to Romania at that country's request

Kirby says troop moves are not permanent and emphasizes that "these forces are
not going to fight in Ukraine"

Kremlin spokesman tells CNN, "U.S. de facto is continuing to pump up tension in
Europe," adding deployments are "the best proof that we, as Russia, have an
obvious reason to be worried"

Biden admin. ready to "hit the ground running" once Covid-19 vaccine is approved
for children 5 and under, White House Covid-19 response coordinator Jeff Zients
says

Pfizer-BioNTech is seeking emergency use authorization for their two-dose Covid
vaccine for children aged 6 months to 4 years; if approved, about 18M children
would be able to receive shot

Zients says admin. will "move as fast as possible" to make vaccines available
once FDA and CDC make their recommendations on use of vaccine for kids under 5

U.S. has secured "ample doses" and necessary needles and supplies to administer
shots, Zients says, adding admin. is "working closely" with pediatricians, local
health depts., pharmacies, and others to ensure vaccine is available at
"thousands of locations nationwide"

But new Kaiser Family Foundation survey finds only 3 in 10 parents say they will
vaccinate their child under 5 "right away"

Zients acknowledges vaccine hesitancy among parents, saying, "We're working with
our partners to ensure all parents have access to the facts and information they
need to make the right decision"

Five-time Olympic curler John Shuster and three-time Olympic speedskater
Brittany Bowe will carry flag for Team USA at Winter Olympic Games' opening
ceremony in Beijing

Team USA says Bowe will walk on behalf of Elana Meyers Taylor, who was
originally selected to be a flag bearer but announced Tuesday she tested
positive for Covid-19 and is unable to attend tomorrow's opening ceremony

Meyers Taylor, a four-time Olympic bobsledder, says she's asymptomatic and is
isolating at a Beijing hotel; the athlete still plans to compete in Games when
bobsledding events start in about 10 days

While Winter Games haven't officially started yet, preliminary rounds of mixed
doubles curling are underway

Former Justice Dept. official Jeffrey Clark meets with Jan. 6 House select cmte.
months after panel voted to hold him in contempt for his lack of cooperation

Clark is key to panel's investigation as he was one of the officials within
Justice Dept. pushing to pursue unfounded claims of voter fraud in weeks after
2020 election; he was also in touch with Pres. Trump repeatedly, according to
officials who interacted with him

After voting to hold Clark in contempt in Dec., the cmte. paused on proceeding
because Clark said he planned to plead Fifth Amendment; panel gave Clark another
chance to testify, but date got postponed because of a "medical condition" until
yesterday

Clark's interview, which lasted nearly two hours, is expected to play a big role
in determining whether cmte. will take next step of referring him to Justice
Dept.

Panel also met remotely with Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes, who answered
some questions while pleading the Fifth to others, his attorney says

His attorneys are objecting to questions the cmte. wants to ask about events
after Election Day 2020 because Rhodes' criminal trial is pending

Rhodes, who founded the far-right group in 2009, was arrested on seditious
conspiracy charges related to the Jan. 6 attack and subsequent plot to overthrow
Biden presidency; he pleaded not guilty and is currently at federal detention
facility in Oklahoma

Suspect accused in shooting deaths of two campus police officers at Bridgewater
College in Virginia was a former student athlete, school says

27-year-old gunman attended Bridgewater College from 2013-2017 and was a member
of the track and cross-country teams, school official says

The two officers who were killed were responding to emergency calls of
suspicious man at college, police say; gunman fled campus after shooting
officers and was apprehended shortly after

"Multiple firearms" associated with gunman were recovered on and off campus,
Virginia State Police spokesperson says

Suspect is formally charged with five felonies including murder and a firearms
charge, according to court records; suspect's attorney had no comment about the
court hearing

Four men arrested in connection to overdose death of actor Michael K. Williams

Defendants are charged with being part of a drug trafficking organization that
sold deadly fentanyl-laced heroin to Williams

39-year-old Irvin Cartagena, who allegedly gave Williams the drugs, is also
charged with causing the actor's death and faces a maximum sentence of life in
prison if convicted, according to court filings

Williams, best known for his role as Omar Little on HBO's "The Wire," was found
dead in Sept. at his New York City apartment; medical examiner later determined
Williams died from an accidental overdose

The four men allegedly continued selling fentanyl-laced heroin in Manhattan and
Brooklyn even after learning of Williams' death, according to prosecutors
