FORMER NY GOV. PATAKI BACKS GOP HOPEFUL EISEN IN SENATE RACE AGAINST GILLIBRAND

By Craig McCarthy

Published Feb. 7, 2024, 12:59 p.m. ET

Former Republican New York Gov. George Pataki is endorsing Josh Eisen’s bid to
upset two-term Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand later this year.

“New York deserves a senator who not only understands our state’s challenges but
also has the courage and practical wisdom to address the complexities in
Washington. Josh Eisen is that leader,” Pataki, 78, said in announcing his
support for the GOP candidate.

“His extensive humanitarian work combined with his innovative thinking and
legislative acumen make him uniquely qualified to bring about the change we
desperately need.”

Eisen, a billionaire Westchester businessman and big-time Republican donor,
entered the race back in December looking to capitalize on the red wave that
washed over Long Island in the 2022 midterm elections.

Whoever wins the Republican nomination will face an uphill battle to unseat
Gillibrand, 57, in the deep-blue Empire State.

Eisen’s task could get even tougher if another candidate enters the race from
the right and splits the GOP vote.

Next week’s special House election between Democrat Tom Suozzi and Republican
Mazi Pilip could be an early indicator of whether the GOP can capitalize on its
New York momentum..

“I am confident that with Josh Eisen in the Senate, New York will have a
representative who not only fights for them but also brings a refreshing,
commonsense approach to governance,” added Pataki, who left office in 2007 and
remains the most recent Republican to hold statewide office in New York.

Eisen, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2020, said he was “humbled and
honored” by the endorsement.

What do you think? Post a comment.

“I’ve traveled across our great state over the last few months and spoken to
everyday New Yorkers about what matters most, and it’s the economy, jobs, cost
of living, crime and a lack of immigration enforcement,” he said, adding, “Our
leaders are completely disconnected from the realities that people face on a
daily basis.”
