Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Appiah.

Hi Stephen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about
how you got to where you are today?
My name is Stephen Appiah and I from Ghana, Accra which is located in West
Africa. I moved to the states when I was 2 years old. I am the oldest of three.
And as early as I can recall I have always had a love for the arts. The first
time I touched a piano, to even playing the clarinet, it was made clear that my
road in life was gonna be a musical one. I am an artist that deals with not only
the performing arts but I am also a songwriter. Predominantly known throughout
the DMV area as Kojo which holds a deep history coming from the Ashanti tribe
which my family origins comes from, which means for any male, born on a Monday.
I am a digital curator that has infused my love for photography, videography,
and storytelling to bridge those skill sets into carving out my blueprint as an
R&B artist. My love for music and the foundations into creating a song is
profoundly influenced by genres that reside in R&B,Blues, and even in
Alternative Pop. My journey from school plays to dancing at local showcases to
dancing on The Apollo Theatre stage to even reading my written work on giant
teleprompters on FOX45 News has prepared me to jump into the this new adventure
of my musical journey. I was the winner of Remy Martin’s Mixtape Artist Of The
Week 2021 which was a contest that partnered with iheart Radio, that selected my
single Okay which got featured on Real 92.3 LA and 106.1 KMEL. Prior to this
achievement I was also able to land a feature on BET for Made in America as well
as Complex Magazine for their first Complexcon event and also being apart of an
art piece in The Brooklyn Museum stemming from the Afropunk Festival ,which all
focused on my extended passions for fashion and style. As of September 23, 2021,
I was able to release my first musical body of work called Memory Lane which
encompasses everything from striking visuals, powerful productions, and
reoccurring messages of hope throughout this EP.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path
overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
During my journey of becoming a music artist, I can definitely tell you that it
was not an easy one. I made sure to brace myself for the challenges that I knew
I would face as far as making a mark on this world. My intentions had be set
with a clear view of understanding that nothing without hard work as well as
understanding the languages used in photography, videography, and storytelling
would just be handed over to me. So, one of the major things I did was I
enrolled myself at the University of Baltimore, where I received my Bachelors
for Digital Communications. Crossing this milestone prepared me to sharpen my
tools for communication in a massive way to hone in on my craft about the
special languages used to create various art dealing with different mediums. I
was able to convey and bring forth my art in the dynamic ways I had envisioned
in my mind.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you
apart from others?
I am a musician, a photographer, and a dancer. And I am most proud of my EP
titled Memory Lane which is available on all digitally streaming platforms. And
with this project I want to send a message of hope through storytelling in an
art form using songs with infectious sounds. Respectfully what sets me apart
from others out here is my attention to detail with my vast knowledge dealing
with the history of art from all over the globe, but especially my love for
African Folklore, which I’ve garnished with my experiences of being in front of
the camera as well as being behind it. And with all of that walking in a human
form I think that makes me a uniquely balanced individual who has the range to
make an impact through anything I choose to work on or be apart of.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes down to finding a mentor I would suggest finding someone who is
older than you. The beneficial reasons of this goes a long way. A mentor wise in
their years can advise you on finding a faster and smoother solution towards any
issue or lend a helpful perspective. And this is purely off of whoever that is
sharing their life experiences about the same challenges you are facing during
the times you encounter them. As far as networking goes meeting new people who
share a common interest in being in the same space as you can open up so many
opportunities to work with others that could add onto your life’s journey in
such an eye opening way. Because you never know how valuable a simple
conversation could lead you on a path into developing more relationships in
curating this thing called life in your own amazing way.
