An escape room is an immersive game experience where you and your team work together to find objects, uncover clues, and solve puzzles to advance through a story and win your way out. WHAT IS A HAUNTED ATTRACTION? Haunts are typically temporary attractions created for entertainment purposes, especially during the Halloween season. Think haunted houses, hayrides, and mazes. They are often elaborately decorated and populated with actors in costumes and makeup who aim to scare visitors. People visit for a thrilling and spooky experience, knowing that the supernatural elements are simulated for entertainment and not real. ARE ESCAPE ROOMS SCARY? The vast majority of escape rooms are not scary. But many scary games do exist if that's what you're looking for! The scariest escape games tend to have live actors present, whereas games set in a horror environments without actors are usually merely "spooky." Morty's user reviews often tell you how scary a game is. If you really don't want to play a scary room (or maybe if you really do) you can always ask the escape room host prior to booking, and they'll be happy to tell you what to expect. AM I REALLY LOCKED IN THE ESCAPE ROOM? No. For safety reasons escape rooms in the US and much of the world are not actually locked, or have an emergency override, so you can choose to leave at any time. And of course your game master will let you out at the end in the event you don't escape. But it’s fun to pretend you are! HOW DO YOU GET OUT OF AN ESCAPE ROOM? Winning an escape room is simple: 1. Start the game by searching the area for clues, props, and puzzles. 2. Communication is paramount. Find a clue or something important? Call it out to your team. 3. Pay attention to detail, often times little things are the key. 4. Think outside the box, a lot of times the right answer isn't the most obvious. 5. Don't be afraid to try stuff. Have an idea? Give it a whirl. Solve all the puzzles in the room before time is up and you'll walk out of the room victorious. Of course if you don't solve all the puzzles in time your game master will let you out once the time is up. And if you need to exit early, don't hesitate to ask your game master. HOW DO I BOOK AN ESCAPE ROOM? Use the Morty app to find and a great game near you then click book now and choose a time. WHEN DO HAUNTS OPEN? Some haunts are available year-round, though many are just during Halloween season, which runs from early September through the first half of November. Halloween Season: Most haunted attractions, especially those designed for entertainment purposes, tend to open during the Halloween season. This typically starts in early to mid-September and runs through the end of October. Some haunts may open as early as late August or stay open a bit into November to capture the Halloween spirit. Weekends: Many haunted attractions, especially those that are seasonal or part of special events, often operate primarily on weekends. This is when they tend to see the highest visitor turnout. Fridays and Saturdays are usually the busiest nights. Evening Hours: Haunted attractions usually open in the evening, typically after dusk. This is because darkness enhances the spooky atmosphere, and it's when many people are available to attend after school or work. Special Events: Some haunted attractions may have special opening times for events like Friday the 13th, themed nights (e.g., "zombie night"), or other promotions. Check their official websites or social media for specific event schedules. Year-Round Attractions: Permanent haunted houses or attractions that operate year-round may have more flexible schedules and may be open on weekends and select weekdays. ARE ALL ESCAPE ROOMS THE SAME? Games vary wildly in terms of theme, puzzles, storyline, and how elaborate their scenery is. Although escape room businesses with multiple locations will sometimes offer the same game at different locations, most escape rooms are totally unique. HOW MUCH DO ESCAPE ROOMS COST? Most escape rooms cost between $30-$40 per person, though many locations offer discounts for larger groups or during non-peak times. HOW LONG DOES AN ESCAPE ROOM LAST? Most games have a 60 minute clock, but some rooms can be shorter or longer. DO I NEED TO BOOK THE ESCAPE ROOM AHEAD OF TIME? Yes. The vast majority of escape rooms do not allow for walk-ins, and many rooms are fully booked several days in advance. IS IT OK IF I ARRIVE LATE TO AN ESCAPE ROOM? No. Escape rooms must run on a tight schedule, since another time slot likely follows right behind the one you booked. It is best to arrive at least 10 minutes early, to allow your group to complete the waiver and get organized before the game begins. If you are running late, call the escape room as soon as you realize it to let them know and see if it's ok. HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN PLAY AN ESCAPE ROOM AT A TIME? Each room varies in terms of the minimum, maximum, and recommended number of players. Rooms typically require at least 2 people per booking, with most rooms being ideal for 4-6 players. DO YOU HAVE TO PURCHASE TICKETS TO HAUNTS IN ADVANCE? Whether you need to purchase tickets to haunted attractions in advance can vary depending on the specific attraction, its popularity, and its ticketing policies. Here are some common scenarios: To avoid disappointment and ensure a smooth experience, especially during the busy Halloween season, it's generally advisable to check the haunted attraction's official website or contact them directly for information on ticket availability, pricing, and any specific policies regarding advance ticket purchases. Planning ahead and buying tickets in advance can help you make the most of your visit and avoid long wait times. ARE HAUNTED HOUSES SAFE? Haunted houses designed for entertainment purposes are generally safe when they adhere to safety regulations and guidelines. These attractions are meant to provide a thrilling and spooky experience, but they are not intended to harm visitors. However, safety precautions should always be a priority for both the organizers and visitors. Here are some key points to consider: These experiences are typically dark, so slipping and tripping hazards are always a possibility. Some of the most common haunted house injuries include hip, ankle and wrist injuries caused by falls. It is best to consider such hazards before attending. While haunted houses designed for entertainment are generally safe, it's essential to exercise common sense and follow any rules or guidelines provided by the attraction. If you have concerns about a specific haunted house's safety or have medical conditions that might be aggravated by the experience, it's a good idea to contact the attraction in advance or consult with a healthcare professional before attending. WILL STRANGERS PLAY THE ESCAPE ROOM WITH ME? Probably not. Most escape rooms are private, meaning a single group of family or friends plays the room at a time. However, a few escape rooms are public and allow multiple groups to play together. Morty indicates whether games are public or private, and you can always call the escape room to double check. WHAT IF WE GET STUCK DURING THE ESCAPE ROOM? You are encouraged to ask for hints when your team gets stuck on a puzzle. Don't hesitate, even the best escape room players ask for hints. ARE ALL HAUNTED EXPERIENCES SCARY? Not all haunted experiences are necessarily scary, as the level of fear or scariness can vary widely depending on the specific attraction and its intended audience. On Morty, haunted experiences are categorized into 1 of 4 scary ratings: 1. Not scary 2. Spooky 3. Scary 4. 💩👖 Ultimately, haunted experiences aim to provide a range of thrills and scares to cater to different tastes and comfort levels, so you can choose an experience that aligns with your preferences. IS USING HINTS IN AN ESCAPE ROOM CONSIDERED CHEATING? Not at all. Even players who have completed dozens or hundreds of games will ask for hints from time to time. In the end, the point isn’t to solve all the puzzles on your own, but to have the most fun adventure possible WHAT IF I DON’T ESCAPE? When the time is up you’ll be let out. Even the most experienced players don’t escape sometimes, so don’t feel bad if it happens. Escape games are meant to be challenging and the designers expect that not all groups will solve all the puzzles in time. Try again! Many experienced escape room players failed quite a few of their early games. ARE ESCAPE ROOMS GOOD FOR KIDS? Many escape rooms are great for kids, but some are more appropriate for children than others. Some games may have frightning elements, more adult themes, or complex puzzles better suited for older players. Regardless of how appropriate a room is for kids, most locations will require an adult to accompany children under the age of 16 who are playing. If you are unsure if a room is age appropriate, read reviews on your Morty app from other players, they will often indicate a recommended age for the game. And if still unsure, give the location a call and ask! DOWNLOAD THE MORTY APP DISCOVER THE BEST ESCAPE ROOMS AND HAUNTED HOUSES NEAR YOU Every escape room. Every haunt.
