HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR DIGITAL MARKETING

by Wes Thompson | February 2020

There is little doubt today that digital marketing can be a very efficient,
effective, beneficial, and inexpensive way to reach potential customers or
clients. Indeed marketing products and services or promoting events using social
media and email marketing should be an integral part of any organization’s
marketing strategy.

But with so many platforms (social media sites, email marketing programs, etc.),
and so many important guidelines for posting, advertising, and promoting, how is
a busy business person to decide which avenues to take and how to effective use
digital marketing to reach more customers, win them over, and close sales?

The “let’s go for it all” approach to deciding which platforms to include in
your digital marketing strategy almost never a good approach. This will lead to
frustration, inadequate posts, and marketing burnout. It’s far preferable to
select about three or four platforms to start, and, if there is a specific need
for your company, to add more later on.

This guide aims to serves as a quick and easy guide to digital marketing, with
explanations as to when, where, and how to use various social media and email
marketing platforms.

GENERAL TIPS ON USING DIGITAL MEDIA EFFECTIVELY

Whereas there are specific tactics that you will want to keep in mind, which we
will explore below, let’s begin by looking at general trends, those that apply
to social media platforms generally.

When uploading photos on any platform, use optimal keywords to name them for SEO
purposes.

SET UP YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS PROPERLY

The first thing you should consider when creating your business’ social media
accounts that will be used in its digital marketing strategy is choosing an
appropriate name. Your social media profile names should as closely as possible
the name of your business. Keep in mind that some platforms, like Twitter, for
example, have strict and rather short character limits, so you may have to
abbreviate.

But others, such as Facebook, have very generous naming conventions, so try to
include your business’ full name, if possible. This is important, as it will
make it much easier for your customers to know that the profile that they are
looking at is your company’s. Don’t try to be creative when choosing profile
names.

POST CONTENT THAT WILL BENEFIT YOUR READERS

One of the most important considerations for your social media posting is the
content. Content is simply the material, e.g., text, photos, videos, or audio,
that make up the post.

You always strive to include content that will teach your readers something in
every post.

Including beneficial content naturally leads to higher engagement on social
media by your followers. Engagement can be thought of as, for example, “likes,”
shares, or comments on Facebook; favorites or re-tweets on Twitter, or any kind
of sharing or commenting on other platforms.

Engagement is extremely important. Why? Because more engagement means more
likelihood of your posts showing up on followers’ newsfeed.
Relevant Content in Social Media Posts
If you are posting on social media for your business, is it very important to
create content that will be of interest to your potential customers and clients.
This will bring them to see you as a company that is knowledgeable of their
field and that stays current on the latest advancements in their industry.

A very useful web resource for finding and organizing content is Feedly
(http://feedly.com/i/discover). From this site, you can search by topic for
posts and use this for inspiration to create content for social media or email
campaigns.

It is perfectly acceptable, and even highly advisable, to repeat the same post,
especially on Twitter. Doing so will increase engagement and help ensure a
larger viewership.

As only at best 25 percent of followers are reached by any single post, it’s a
good idea to post the same information more than once, using a different photo.
This is called “recirculation.”
Follow the 80% / 20% Rule
When posting to any social media platform, always keep the 80% / 20% rule in
mind. This means you should make about 80 percent of your posts interesting,
informative ones that your followers will benefit from and feel that you are
providing a service to them by keeping them informed, educating them, and
listening to them. Keep your sales-focused posts to no more than about 20
percent of your posts.

No one likes to receive sales pitch after sales pitch when they follow a company
on social media or sign up for email newsletters. Followers want to be engaged
with a company’s community. Sure, it’s fine to mention a new product, to ask for
your followers’ opinion about something, or to promote an event.

But posts or email campaigns that are too sales oriented all the time will drive
away followers.
Use Images and Videos in Your Posts
One notable point that should be made up front is the importance of including
images or videos in posts to social media platforms and in email marketing
campaigns. Posts with images receive interaction rates 39% higher than those
that do not (Pierce).
Make Posts (and Profiles) SEO Friendly
For each social media platform on which you have an account, navigate to the
“About” page (Facebook), Bio (Twitter), or a place to enter a description and
enter a description that is SEO appropriate. Try especially to use relevant key
words within the first 140 characters of your entry.

Also, each time you post on social media, you should try to use key words
relevant to your industry early on in the post. You can also use more than one,
but be careful about trying to cram too many keywords into a single post, as
this is called “keyword stuffing” and actually by far does more harm than good.

Following good SEO practices will result in higher rankings in search engines,
such as Google, thereby placing you above your competition in searches by
potential customers or clients.

BLOGGING

The importance of including a blog as part of your website cannot be
overemphasized!

With every original article you post to your blog, you enjoy a new opportunity
to get found in search engines, get shared on social media, get linked to by
other sites, and get a new person to interact with your company.

ADVANTAGES OF BLOGGING

Companies that posted articles to their blogs about 16 times per month got well
over three times more traffic than companies that didn’t have a blog, or posted
too seldom. Additionally, the websites with blogs get indexed four times more by
search engines than those without blogs. Search engines love well-kept blogs!

In addition, companies that blog get 88 percent more leads than those that
don’t. Blogging 16 to 20, about twice times per month can more than double a
website’s traffic.

Blog posts should not be sales pitches. Rather, they should be informative
articles that make your reader feel that you are educating them, providing
useful information, and adding value to their knowledge base about your industry
or business.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL WORDPRESS FOR YOUR BUSINESS WEBSITE

One of the most exciting parts about starting a new business is setting up your
website and driving traffic to it. You have a few options as to how to set up
your business website.

But the one that I think is the best is to download and install WordPress on
your business’ server. This will give your a great amount of flexibility in
creating an attractive website for your business.

WHAT IS SELF-HOSTED WORDPRESS?

The self-hosted version of WordPress houses your website on your own server,
either at your company, or one that you subscribe to. You download the free
software from WordPress and then install it plus additional plugins and themes
per your needs. It’s really a straightforward process and the one that I
recommend over the web-based version of WordPress.

HOW IS THIS VERSION DIFFERENT FROM THE WED-BASED VERSION?

This post, and the following related ones, focuses on the WordPress.org
self-hosted version. If you are interested in the web-based WordPress.com
version, please see my post on that version. Just a few of the key differences
in benefits between the two WordPress versions are the use of plugins,
installation of themes, and monetizing potential of your website.

PLUGINS

Plugins are small applications that you download and install on top of your
basic WordPress software. These add incredible functionality to your website’s
design and performance. Plugins are easily found by searching within the plugin
page of your WordPress design application.

Plugins are an essential part of enjoying the total freedom to build your
WordPress website exactly as you want it. With the proper plugins, you can do
almost anything you may need or want to do with your website. With the
self-hosted version (WordPress.org), you enjoy this total freedom to install and
use plugins as you want.

The web-based version of WordPress comes with a basic set of plugins, even with
the free plan. However, you must upgrade to the business plan to be able to be
able to install additional plugins.

INSTALLATION OF THEMES

With WordPress.com, you will have access to some free themes even with the free
plan. Upgrading to the premium or business plans will give you access to even
more. But, you are still limited to what this version offers and there is no
option to upload additional themes purchased off the WordPress platform.

With WordPress.org, you have total freedom to choose whichever WordPress theme
you wish. This is a much more flexible option. This allows you to install and
use the excellent Divi theme, which is a great one to use to design an
attractive and professional looking website.

MONETIZING YOUR WEBSITE

One of the key benefits of having a blog is being able to make extra money — if
blogging isn’t already your main source of income — through affiliate marketing
and direct advertising. Affiliate marketing is when you use a special link
within your blog posts, or image links in your sidebar, that directs a visitor
to your site to your affiliate’s site, where a purchase is offered. If that
reader makes a purchase, you get a commission for referring that customer.

Direct advertising is placing an ad created by your client, or by an ad agency,
in the sidebar or within the post itself, that directs your visitors to the
advertiser’s sales page. Some small or medium-sized business websites earn their
owners thousands or tens of thousands (some even more) of dollars a month
through affiliate marketing and direct advertising. Both are legitimate
practices and are perfectly legal.

But you can only take advantage of this on WordPress.com with the Business plan.
This will cost you US$300 per year. Not a lot, really, but with your self-hosted
option, you’re looking at less than $75 for the hosting fees, and that’s with
the plus plan.

The additional cost of the WordPress.com option does not make this version very
preferable over the WordPress.org version.

So, if you choose to go with the more flexible, less expensive version, let’s
look at how to get you set up.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL WORDPRESS

The following are the steps to take to set up your self-hosted WordPress
website.

GET A WEB HOST

Before you can install the WordPress self-hosted version, you will need to get a
web host. This is the service you use to provide a home for all the files on
your website. It is also through your host that you can register for your domain
name.

I know this may seem like a lot if you are new to this, but we will look at each
step carefully as we go through this WordPress tutorial. Really, after you get a
host and download WordPress, much of the operation after that is very similar to
the web-based version described above.

The reason I recommend the self-hosted version over the web-based one is that
the self-hosted option gives you more control over your website.

The host that I use and recommend is Bluehost, which is very highly used by both
individuals and businesses to host their websites. I have been with Bluehost
since 2011 and have been quite happy with their product and service. Here are
the steps to get started:

1.Go to the Bluehost website.

2. Click on the green “Get Started Now” button.

3.Select a plan according to your needs — basic, plus, or prime. The difference
in price is minimal but the offerings in the plus or prime plan are huge.

4. After you click “select,” the next page will allow you to register a domain
name. This is a very important step, as it will become your “web address,” or
URL. So, choose carefully. If you need some tips on choosing a domain name, one
of the foremost authorities on search-engine optimization has provided some for
you.

Always try to get a “.com” URL (Uniform Resource Locator, your “web address”).
This is the most traditional and your readers will expect to see a .com URL for
a business website.

5. On the next screen, enter your account information. At the bottom, you will
be asked to enter your payment information. After you complete this step, you
have set up your new hosting account!

INSTALL WORDPRESS ON YOUR DOMAIN

Now that you have your hosting account set up, it’s time to download WordPress!
If you are using Bluehost, you can use their WordPress installation tool to do
this for you. This is a huge convenience and will make your life easier.

From the WordPress tools screen, make sure you click on the New Install tab all
the way to the upper left. If you already have another domain name on your
server, be super sure to select the correct domain, as you see above. You will
be given a choice between having the “www” as part of your URL, such as
http://www.greensagemedia.com, or without it, such as http://greensagemedia.com.

I have done a lot of reading up on which option is better and have tried both
options. I prefer including the “www,” as that is the traditional form of a URL
and is what users are used to. However, I have yet to discover a major advantage
of one over the other.

For most installations, and especially if this is your first domain name on your
server, there is no need to fill in a path name. The installer will create its
own path. However, you should fill in the site title, briefly indicating what
your business does. This “tagline” will appear in your homepage’s tab at the
very top of your visitor’s browser.

For example, if you hover your mouse over the tab at the top of your own browser
for a few seconds right now, you will see a small pullout that says “Green Sage
Media | Professional Digital Marketing and Web Design Services.” This is
important for SEO purposes as well as for indicating to your reader what your
website is about. You can always easily change your tagline on the WordPress
settings page.

After all of your information in filled in, click “Install WordPress” and wait a
few minutes for the installation to complete. Be patient and don’t refresh the
page or close your browser at this point.

When installation is complete, there are no trumpets or confetti telling you
installation was complete. Rather, the spinning “pending” notification stops and
the installer goes on to the “Updates” page and tells you that WordPress is up
to date.

VERIFY THAT YOUR INSTALLATION COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY

Now for the exciting part! You can check to see if the installation was
successful by simply typing your URL into a new tab on your browser. You should
see a simple website showing your tagline.

If you see this page (or something similar), you have successfully installed
WordPress. Congrats! And don’t worry. This page is just a placeholder for now,
showing that at least you have a website getting ready to undergo its designing.

In my next posts in this series, we’ll learn how to conduct a basic WordPress
setup, install plugins and themes, and design a basic website.

By the way, if you are using a host that does not offer the WordPress automatic
install explained in this post, don’t despair. It’s not very difficult to
download and install WordPress manually. It just takes a little more time and
effort on your part. But, these days, most of the more popular hosts offer the
automatic WordPress installation option.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WOMEN IN ACCOUNTING

by Wes Thompson | May 17, 2012

Accounting is one of the hottest career fields today.

In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a branch of the US Department of Labor,
projects job growth in accounting to be about 22 percent from 2008 to 2018,
which is much faster than the average job growth for all career fields.

As of 2008, the median annual wage of accountants and auditors was $59,430, and
the top 10 percent earned more than $102,380, according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics.

Business Insider reports that, of the top ten most popular college majors today,
accounting comes in third. Additionally, more women major in accounting than do
men, 52 percent versus 48 percent.

However, the cost of becoming an accountant can be quite high. Most employers
expect their accountants to have earned at least a bachelor’s degree and many
students will spend another one or two years in college to become eligible to
sit for the Certified Public Accountant Exam.

Thus, depending on the level of education attained and the living arrangements
available to a student, earning a degree could cost anywhere from $13,000 to
$30,000 per year.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR WOMEN ACCOUNTING MAJORS

For this reason, it has become very important for students to find ways to help
defray some of the expenses. Women interested in a career in accounting have the
opportunity to apply for a variety of scholarships that help them do exactly
that.

THE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN IN ACCOUNTING (EFWA)

EFWA grants scholarships to women who are earning degrees in accounting at the
undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. At the undergraduate level,
there are two primarily scholarships available. Students may apply for one or
the other.

WOMEN IN TRANSITION

This scholarship is awarded to a woman who is the primary source of support for
her family and is enrolling as an incoming freshman to earn a bachelor’s degree
in accounting. It is awarded for up to $16,000 over four years as determined by
EFWA’s board of trustees.

WOMEN IN NEED

Similar to the Women in Transition scholarship, this one is awarded to a woman
who is completing her sophomore year of academic pursuit, and it is awarded in
the amount of $2,000 per year for two years.

In addition to these directly-granted scholarships, the foundation also sponsors
four additional scholarships, meaning that students may apply for the funds from
a single application available at www.efwa.org.

The other undergraduate scholarships available by applying through EFWA are
from:

The Institute of Management Accountants: $2,000 for women working toward a
bachelor’s degree in accounting;

The Michele L. McDonald Memorial: A yearly award of $1,000 with preference given
to a woman returning to college from the work force or after raising children;
and

The Moss Adams Foundation: A yearly amount of $1,000 is awarded to minority
women studying accounting at the junior or senior levels.

Applicants should carefully study the criteria for each scholarship to determine
whether they are eligible.

ACCOUNTING & FINANCIAL WOMEN’S ALLIANCE (AFWA)

AFWA’s scholarships fall into two categories: those that are open to the public
and those that are offered to members only.

The public scholarships at the undergraduate level help defray the cost of
students attending the 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of university when pursuing an
accounting or finance degree.

Master’s scholarships are for those attending an accredited accounting college
or university program at the master’s level and majoring in accounting or
finance.

For more information and to apply, students should visit AFWA’s Chapter
Directory for the chapter’s contact information. In cases where there is not a
chapter directly in the applicant’s area, the nearest chapter should be
contacted. The scholarships are awarded annually in the month of May for the
following school year.

AFWA member scholarship applicants must be a current member of the organization
to be considered. Application information and forms are only provided from the
secure Web site, which requires a sign-on to access. Scholarships are awarded in
the fall and spring of each year.

In September 2011, AFWA also began offering a PhD scholarship to members
majoring in accounting. It is awarded to doctoral students who demonstrate
superlative achievement, leadership, communication skills, character, academic
performance, and financial need. Funding is intended to cover research costs.

In addition to academic scholarships, the organization also offers certification
scholarships for the certified public accountant, the certified financial
planner, and the certified management accountant, for example.

More information can be found at the AFWA Web site at www.afwa.org.

THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (AAUW)

The AAUW is a national group comprised of more than 100,000 members and donors,
1,000 branches, and 500 institutions of higher learning.

AAUW has long been known for advancing educational and professional
opportunities for women in the United States. The organization serves as one of
the largest sources of funding for women pursuing graduate studies in the world.
They offer three fellowships and grants geared toward women students interested
in a career in accounting:

American Fellowships were established in 1888 and comprise the largest of AAUW’s
scholarships. They support women completing doctoral dissertations, doing their
postdoctoral research, or finishing research for publication purposes.
Recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Career Development Grants support women who have already earned a bachelor’s
degree and who seek to advance or change careers or to re-enter the work force
after some time away from their studies.

Special consideration is given to women of color, those pursuing their first
advanced (master’s or higher) degree, or to students wishing to earn credentials
in nontraditional fields. The grant will cover tuition, fees, books, supplies,
local transportation, and dependent care. Recipients must be U.S. citizens or
permanent residents.

International Fellowships are for women who are not US citizens or permanent
residents. Applicants must be attending accredited institutions and pursuing
graduate or postgraduate studies. Grants are awarded based on academic
achievement and demonstrated commitment.

By far and large, most recipients of these fellowships return to their home
countries to become leaders in government, academia, business, and the arts.

AAUW scholarship grants total in the millions of dollars every year. Application
information for each of these scholarships can be found at: www.aauw.org.

THE SOROPTIMIST WOMEN’S OPPORTUNITY AWARDS

The Women’s Opportunity Awards scholarships are sponsored by Soroptimist, a
major women’s education project. In this program, various organizations assist
women who serve as the main source of economic support for their families by
helping to provide resources required to better their education and skills,
which leads to more employment opportunities.

Each year, the grants total more than $1.5 million in cash awards. Many grantees
of the awards have overcome many challenges in their lives, including drug
abuse, domestic violence, and poverty.

Recipients may use the funds to help defray any expenses linked to their efforts
to attain a higher education. Examples include books, care for children, and
transportation.

To be eligible, students must be women who have been admitted to an
undergraduate degree program. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need.
More information can be found at www.soroptimist.org.

PATSY TAKEMOTO MINK EDUCATION FOUNDATION

The Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation offers scholarships for low-income
women who are pursuing an education or training to make better lives for
themselves and their children. Awards are granted for up to $2,000.

These education support awards may be used to defray school or living expenses
while the student is enrolled in an educational program.

Qualification criteria include the following:

 * Being a woman at least 17 years of age
 * Having a child/children under the age of 18
 * Being enrolled in a program earning a first bachelor’s, master’s, or
   doctorate degree
 * Earning less than $17,500 for a family of two, $22,000 for a family of 3, or
$26,000 for a family of four

For more information, please visit their website.

THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CPAS (AICPA)

AICPA offers a fellowship for minority doctoral students for the purpose of
helping to ensure a diversity of backgrounds represented in the certified public
accountant profession.

Their vision is to increase the number of minority CPAs who then will serve as
mentors and role models to young people in the collegiate environment.

The fellowships are awarded in the amount of $12,000 annually for full-time
accounting majors and are geared toward those who show promise of becoming
accounting scholars and teachers.

About 20 applicants a year are granted a scholarship. Eligibility requirements
include being a student of African-American, Hispanic, or Native American
ethnicity, being a citizen of the United States, having earned or planning to
earn the CPA license, and having been admitted to a doctoral program at an
accredited US university.

Applications can be completed by downloading the PDF version of the form at
www.aicpa.org. Applications must be postmarked by April 1 of each year.

AICPA also offers undergraduate and master’s degree scholarships in the amount
of $3,000 per year to outstanding minority students who wish to earn the CPA
license.

Applicants must be a full-time accounting student of African-American, Latino,
Native American or Asian-American descent, and have completed 30 semester hours
in university-level coursework, at least six of which are in accounting.

For detailed instructions and requirements, as well as an application, see the
scholarship Web site at thiswaytocpa.com.

THE LINDA LAEL MILLER SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded each year to encourage women who want to improve
their position in life through education. Applicants must be 25 years or older,
and have had difficult times finding scholarships for which they qualify.

As in previous years, the scholarship funds may be used not only for tuition and
books, but also for childcare, transportation and other expenses not covered by
other traditional scholarships. Ms. Miller’s website has application information
at www.lindalaelmiller.com.

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS WHEN APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

There are many more general university scholarships offered to students
interested in becoming an accountant. High school students should talk to their
guidance counselors about scholarship opportunities.

The best time to begin this process is during the junior year. Waiting until
senior year is not a good idea, as many application deadlines come surprisingly
early.

Most universities have entire offices dedicated to providing students with
scholarship information and to assisting students with the application process.

Various scholarship sponsors may ask applicants to meet different requirements,
may have different deadlines, and may ask for different extra materials to be
submitted along with the application.

However, in most cases, the application processes have more in common than
differences. The best rule to keep in mind when applying is to be prepared
early.

For the most part, applying for a scholarship is a lengthy process, requiring
paperwork, personal essays, and letters of recommendation from previous
teachers, peers, or employers.

Waiting until only a few days or weeks until the application deadline is never a
good idea, as it takes a lot of time to secure all of these required documents
or to write a good essay.

It’s very good practice to prepare a folder to keep all the required materials
in during the application process. That way, when something is needed, it’s
readily available and easy to find.

Though many scholarships require an essay on a specific topic, it’s advisable to
at least write a basic one even before you know the topic.

Applicants should begin by discussing general interests, accomplishments, and
career goals. This will at least provide the basics and then more detailed
information can be added later to suit the requirements of the institution
offering the scholarship.

These steps will help ensure there is no delay in the scholarship application
process.

HOW TO PLAN YOUR TRIP FOR MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT

by Wes Thompson | July 2015

Even when you plan your trip to the beach for a weekend, you have to be sure to
do everything you need to do before you leave your house.

Did you pack enough clothes? Bring your camera? How about sunscreen? Did you gas
up the car?

But when you plan your trip for a longer journey, such as to Southeast Asia, it
takes really careful thought that should start at least two months before your
departure date. Following are some important details to carefully consider when
you begin to plan your trip.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

This is one of the most fun steps of the planning process. It’s important to
have at least a basic sketch of where you want to go, how long you will stay,
general costs of the trip, and interesting things to do in the various places
you will visit.

You also have to consider whether you will need a visa to enter the countries
you have in mind, and should learn the history and cultural perspectives of the
places you think you would like to visit.

Draw up a basic list, but keep in mind that it may change as you do further
research. What are the costs of accommodations where you want to go? What is the
food like? Will you need to have any vaccinations to travel there?

Do your research and plan smartly for your trips.

These are just some of the questions that you should ask yourself in the early
stages of trip planning.

Read plenty of blogs and reviews from travelers who have been to the places you
would like to visit.

PURCHASE YOUR FLIGHT TICKETS

Carefully planning not only where to go but when to purchase your flight tickets
is important because prices will vary depending on various factors.

These may include, for example, how long in advance you make your purchase, from
whom you purchase them, and the days of the week that you want to travel.

BEST TIME TO PURCHASE AIRLINE TICKETS IN ADVANCE

Purchasing your airline tickets at the right amount of time in advance will help
ensure you get the best prices. You don’t want to purchase too early, but
waiting until too soon before your departure date is also not a good idea.
Sometimes you can find great last-minute deals.

This will be the case when it’s only a few weeks before the flight and the
flight is only half booked. The airlines become desperate to sell more seats, so
the prices drop significantly.

But…if there are only a few seats left on the flight, the airlines know that
somebody will need a last-minute flight and so will jack the price up really
high to get as much as they can on those last remaining seats. You don’t want to
take this gamble.

The Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) is a data tracking service that
monitors airfare prices throughout the year. I find their articles on when to
purchase flights interesting to read. According to their most recent research
(October 2014), the best time to purchase domestic flights (within the United
States) is 56 days in advance and for international flights it’s 168 days (24
weeks) in advance.

BEST DAY TO PURCHASE AIRLINE TICKETS

According to the ARC’s research, the best day to purchase your flight tickets is
Sunday. This is the case for both domestic and international travel.

OBTAIN A VISA OR VISA LETTER (IF NEEDED)

Plan ahead to make sure you have your visas in time.

Obtaining information on whether you need a visa for specific countries is not
difficult. It’s also pretty painless to obtain the visa itself. The requirements
vary greatly and it really depends on which countries you plan to visit as well
as which country you are from.

The best sources of information on visa requirements are the official websites
of the embassies or consulates for the nations you plan to visit. There, you
will find all the information regarding application processes, fees, terms, etc.

Please bear in mind that visa requirements, fees, procedures, and turnaround
times may vary greatly even from two countries that are situated right next to
each other. Much depends on where you plan to travel.

For example, most nationals can enter Europe through a single county and go to
all other nations in the European Union without the need for a visa.

Some nations in Asia — China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Indonesia,
generally require visas from most visitors. If you are traveling to Southeast
Asia, please see my previous post on Visa Requirements for Southeast Asia.

BOOK YOUR HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

Depending of where you will go, you can sometimes find suitable accommodations
upon your arrival. I don’t recommend this approach, however. I like to have my
hotel reservations made in advance, so I can relax and not have to worry about
it during the trip.

Accommodation types, locations, and prices can vary greatly, so it’s best to
have some idea of what you want during the planning stage of your trip. You can
use an online booking service to you choose your hotels. Trip Advisor is a great
source of information for travelers and you can also book your hotels, flights,
etc. on their website.

MAKE SURE YOUR VACCINATIONS ARE UP TO DATE

For the most part, chances are you are already up-to-date on any vaccinations
that you would require for traveling to most counties. However, there are some
places where diseases such as cholera, hepatitis, typhoid, and rarely, malaria,
are still a risk.

I would advise you to check to see which vaccinations are recommended for the
places you plan to travel. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has an
excellent and informative website where you can read up on health tips for the
specific countries you plan to travel.

If you have any concerns or questions about which vaccinations you may need or
your trip, please consult with your physician well in advance of your trip, so
that in the event you may need a booster, you can get it taken care of before
your departure.

PACK YOUR BAGS!

After all the careful planning that has gone into your trip, one more exciting
part remains: packing your bags! To me, this is when I know the trip is imminent
and when I really start to feel the excitement of the upcoming adventure.

It’s not a step that should be taken lightly, however. Starting a few weeks
before your trip, start making a list of things you will need to pack, items you
still need to buy, tasks that you will need to do before you leave, and anything
you want to do last minute around the house.

ESSENTIALS

Do you take any medications? Well, it may not be easy for you to find it
overseas. Each country may have different medications available, so you may not
be able to get exactly what you need. Be sure you have an adequate supply of the
medications you need well in advance of your departure date, especially if it’s
a prescription medication.

ATTIRE

Even if you are traveling to an area with a warm climate, it’s highly recommend
taking a light jacket. Often, in the tropics, buildings are overly
air-conditioned and you may find yourself chilly. Planes and trains also tend to
be a bit too cold at times.

Of highest importance is a comfortable pair of shoes. These should be versatile,
being able to serve you in a variety of climates, rain, snow, etc., and
comfortable enough for you to wear all day, even when doing a lot of walking.

Of course, you will want to bring more than one pair, so pack a variety, for
example, one pair of sturdy shoes, one pair of lightweight casuals, and a pair
of sandals, especially when traveling to warmer areas.

PETS?

Do you have pets? If so, it’s important to plan for their care while you are
away. Can you leave them in the care of family, friends or neighbors? If not, is
there a boarding service in your city? Are their shots up to date?

The further in advance you begin to think of your furry friends the better.
Sometimes pet boarding places fill up, so you may have to check elsewhere. Also,
friends and family will appreciate advance notice so they can make arrangements.

If your pets’ vaccinations will come due while you are traveling, be sure to
plan ahead and have them done early, unless your vet says it’s ok to wait until
your return.

LAST-MINUTE ITEMS

Ah, the day of the trip has arrived! You’re excited, and…well, maybe a little
apprehensive at the same time. This is perfectly normal.

Just don’t forget the last-minute items you need to do around the house so that
you don’t need to worry about anything while you are enjoying your adventure.
Did you remember to cancel your newspaper delivery? Did you pay all your bills
that may come due while you are away?

Also, don’t forget to do things to help secure your house or apartment. Check to
make sure all the windows and doors are locked, turn off and unplug any large
items that aren’t needed, such as televisions, computers, and ovens. Double
check that all the doors are locked and that the security alarm has been
activated.

Finally, take a deep breath, relax, and go enjoy your trip!

THE THREE BEST ISLANDS TO VISIT IN THAILAND

by Wes Thompson | February 2, 2016

One adventure that you don’t want to miss when visiting Thailand is to hit up a
few of the best Thai islands.

But with so many to choose from, it can be challenging to decide which are the
best islands in Thailand for a first-time visit.

My recommendations are: Koh Samui, Koh Samet, and Koh Phi Phi. I have visited
all three of these islands and feel they are very much worth spending some time
there.

KOH SAMUI

One of the best islands in Thailand is Koh Samui. (By the way, “koh” is a sort
of close pronunciation of the Thai word for “island.”)

If you want to be near the action on Koh Samui, I would recommend an
accommodation on Chaweng Beach.

It’s very convenient to stay here, as the beach is only about a 15-minute ride
from the airport via a songthaew, a truck-like vehicle with two rows of bench
seats along the side in the back. They are abundantly available on Koh Samui.

If you want a quieter venue, try Mae Nam, on the north coast of the island. It’s
a 4.5-mile (7 km) stretch of white sandy beach lined with coconut trees. The
water is typically calm there and it’s much more laid back in general.

It’s worth doing a little research on which beach may be best for you, as each
on has its own personality and offerings.

If you find yourself needing medical care, there are four hospitals meeting
international standards on the island: Samui International Hospital, Thai
International Hospital, Bandon Hospital, and Bangkok Samui Hospital. All will be
able to provide at least adequate care.

THINGS TO DO ON KOH SAMUI

As Koh Samui is a large island, there is a large variety of things to do there.
If you are in the mood to just relax, there’s nothing like a day at the beach,
just lying about reading a book, swimming in the warm waters, or having dinner
by the sea.

However, there are many attractions on the island, for example, waterfalls,
Buddhist temples, and national parks. If you are comfortable doing so, you can
rent a motorbike, easily and cheaply, and navigate around the island with ease.
Visit the Temple of the Big Buddha on Koh Samui
At the very least, you should visit the Temple of the Big Buddha, on the
northern coast of the island. This is probably Samui’s most famous landmark.

There you can see a 36-foot (12 meter) high statue of the Buddha, which can be
seen from miles away. There are also many different shrines inside, as well as
small shops that sell a wide variety of amulets and other souvenirs.
Take in the Natural Beauty
It’s also well worth a visit to the Ang Thong National Marine Park, a beautiful
set of 40 islets with intricate limestone hills, lush jungle, white sandy
beaches, and refreshing waterfalls.

Speaking of waterfalls, you wouldn’t want to miss the ones at Na Muang. These
are arguably the most picturesque waterfalls on the island. “Na Muang” means
“purple rocks,” which can be seen at the base of the falls, which you can access
via a natural staircase made of rocks and tree roots.

GETTING TO KOH SAMUI

This island actually has an airport, so it’s easily accessible via a one-hour
flight from Bangkok. Prices are expensive, so be sure to book in advance.

Ferries also run from Surat Thani, the closest city on the mainland to Koh
Samui, so if you are already in the area, this is an option for you. The typical
ferry ride is about 90 minutes. Several agents sell ferry tickets, at a cost of
250-350 baht, at the train station, the airport, and at hotels.

Once on the island, you can take a songthaew to your hotel. They are usually
reasonably priced, but are not metered, so as always when in Thailand, be sure
to settle on a price BEFORE you set off on the ride. If the price seems to high,
counter with a lower price and stand firm or at least meet in the middle.

There are also taxis on the island, but the drivers are reluctant to use their
meters and are often overly priced. I would recommend that you avoid them as
much as possible. Some hotels also offer free pick-ups from the airport, but
it’s always nice to tip the driver about 50-100 baht.

KOH SAMET

Koh Samet is a small but fun island to visit, just off the coast in the Gulf of
Thailand. It is known for its clean and scenic beaches, clear water, coral
reefs, great dining, and fun nightlife.

Many Bangkok residents come to Koh Samet to relax on weekends and short
holidays.

THINGS TO DO ON KOH SAMET

As with all of Thailand’s islands, one of the best things to do on Koh Samet is
just to hang out at the beach and enjoy the water. However, you can also rent
either a bicycle or a motorbike and take a ride around the island. It’s very
scenic, so be sure to take your camera.

Do be careful when renting a motorbike. Make sure both you and the rental agency
understand and agree to the terms. If possible, ask for the price and the length
of time of the rental in wiring.

I don’t recommend renting from your hotel, as they often charge far more than
what you can rent for along the main strip from the pier up to the beach area.
There are many rental companies there, so competition keeps prices in line.

There are only about two roads on the entire island, and the main one is just a
giant circle, so it’s very difficult to get lost. Just remember, in Thailand,
everyone drives on the left!

You can also rent a jet ski, especially at Sai Kaew Beach. A few agents on the
island also offer boat trips and scuba diving excursions.

GETTING TO KOH SAMET

Koh Samet is probably one of the easiest Thai islands to get to. It’s just a
three-hour bus ride from Bangkok to Ban Phe Pier in Rayong, a city on the coast,
and then either a 20-minute speed boat ride or a 45-minute ferry ride to the
island.

In Bangkok, you can catch the bus at the Eastern Bus Terminal, located just
outside the Ekkamai Sky Train Station. This bus will drop you off right at the
ferry depot.

From here, you can take either a high-speed boat or a slower ferry to the
island. Prices will be clearly indicated on a sign at the ticket counter. The
high-speed option is more expensive.

You can also take a mini-van from the Victory Monument, which will drop you off
right at the Ban Phe Pier. The cost is about 200 baht per passenger. Take exit 2
from the station and look for the station near the Century Cinema.

Taxis can even be hired for about 1,600 baht for up to three passengers.

When returning from Koh Samet, just take the next ferry from the Ko Samet pier
to either the Nuan Thip or Ban Phe piers. They are only a short walk away from
each other, so it doesn’t matter which one you take.

PRECAUTIONS WHEN VISITING KOH SAMET

I never once felt in any danger when I was staying and walking around in Sai
Kaew Beach. There is always a lot of activity in this area, and it’s well lit.
Still, it never hurts to be cautious.

Always walk in a group when possible, and always look like you know where you’re
going, even when venturing into an unknown area. Hucksters often target tourists
who looked confused or disoriented.

KOH PHI PHI

Koh Phi Phi, located in Krabi Province, 31 miles (50 km) from Phuket, is
believed by many to be the most beautiful set of islands in the world. Many
travelers would rank it as one of the best islands in Thailand. There are six
islands in the Phi Phi archipelago.

The movie, The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed at Maya Bay, on the
coast of one of the other islands near the main island of Koh Phi Phi Don. Don
is the only truly inhabited island, and one that is sadly being overdeveloped.

A local business owner told us that in the high season, over 5,000 visitors a
day come to the island, the vast majority on day trips from Phuket.

For this reason, it is important to do your research when choosing where to stay
on the island. Please note that Ton Sai Village and Loh Dalum are where all the
action is, and where all the noise is.

I didn’t heed this warning and stayed in a hotel with a beautiful view, but
where we could hear the noise blasting from speakers on the beach down below
until about 2:00 in the morning.

The other beaches, however, are much quieter and more peaceful.

THINGS TO DO ON KOH PHI PHI

There are many things to do on Koh Phi Phi, including good swimming, snorkeling,
hiking, diving, kayaking, and boating around the islands. You can even get your
PADI diving certification.

There is a multitude of agents around the island where you can book various
activities and tours for you and if you are staying in a guest house or hotel,
you can easily book there as well.

Prices are consistent. One word of advice, though. Be sure you confirm exactly
what your tour or activity will consist of and for what length of time, as
“misunderstandings” often occur.

GETTING TO KOH PHI PHI

Getting to Koh Phi Phi can be accomplished by ferry from either Phuket or Krabi.
Ferries depart from Phuket at 9:00 am, 11:00 am, and 2:30 pm.

From Krabi, you have a choice of 9:00 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:00 pm. It’s about a
two-hour ride from either of these locations to the island.

Tickets can be purchased online or from tour agencies, hotels, or even at the
dock. Waiting until you get to the dock may be risky during high seasons, as all
the tickets may have already been sold.

There is quite a difference in quality of the ferries of different companies.
The nicest ones are the Sea Angels, which are considered “first class.” They
have flat-screen TV, more comfortable seats, and free refreshments. To the other
extreme are the Chao Koh boats, which are old, overcrowded, and rusty looking.

Ticket prices run 600 baht from either Phuket or Krabi. I recommend that you NOT
buy a round trip ticket, even at the “discount” price of 1,000 baht, because you
can get cheaper return tickets (about 250 – 300 baht) once you get to the
island.

THE SPLENDORS OF VIETNAMESE FOOD

by Wes Thompson | April 2015

I am always fascinated by the seemingly endless variety of Vietnamese food that
is available for the hungry traveler to enjoy. Every time I think that I have
tried everything this food loving country has to offer, I am so pleasantly
surprised to find something new and delicious.

I am equally bemused by the questions and reactions I receive from friends and
family when the subject of Vietnamese cuisine comes up in conversations.
Questions such as, “Are you able to find anything you can eat over there?” or
“Is the food edible in Vietnam or do you just try to get by with what you can
find?”

My answer: Vietnamese food is incredibly delicious, highly varied, and quite
nutritious. Travelers to Vietnam will be delighted with what they can find to
eat, and all at unbelievably reasonable prices.

Let’s start with the soups, as they are a common meal in Vietnam. All of the
following can be enjoyed for as little as 20,000 Vietnamese dong (Vietnam’s unit
of currency), the equivalent of about 95 US cents.

PHỞ

Often considered the national dish of Vietnam, phở (pronounced similar to the
English word “sun” without the “n”) is a delicious soup made with a tasty broth,
rice noodles somewhat similar in shape and size to linguine (but with a
different taste), onion, basil, a few other herbs. You can order it with either
beef or chicken.

PHỞ AS A STREET FOOD

Phở is a very popular Vietnamese street food and you will be able to find it
everywhere in Vietnam.

It is served with fresh vegetables such as fresh basil, scallions, and steamed
bean sprouts on a separate plate and there will always be two sauces served with
this dish. After being served, break up the veggies into your bowl and also add
the two sauces.

One sauce is a red chili sauce. It’s a little spicy, but not as much so as you
would think. The other sauce is called hoi-san. It’s a sweet-potato-based sauce
made with vinegar and an assortment of delicious herbs and spices.

Start off with a small amount and then add more until you get the taste you
like. But don’t omit the sauces, as they are what give phở its characteristic
flavor!

Phở is very popular all over Vietnam, but you will notice a difference between
northern and southern varieties. The broth tends to be sweeter in the north
compared to the south.

Also, the choice of herbs differ and there are not nearly as much vegetable in
northern style, as the north is further away from the Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s
fruit and vegetable paradise.

HỦ TIẾU

During a visit to Vietnam, nothing beats sitting in little plastic chairs on a
sidewalk near a chaotic Saigon street and digging into a fresh, hot bowl of hủ
tiếu.

Like phở, and in fact like most soups in Vietnam, hủ tiếu is noodle-based, but
the noodles in hủ tiếu are made from tapioca. They are a little chewy and more
firm than other noodles.

VARIETIES OF HỦ TIẾU

There are many varieties of hủ tiếu, but for many, the definitive bowl of hủ
tiếu is hủ tiếu Nam Vang (Nam Vang is the Vietnamese word for Phnom Penh, the
capital of Cambodia, from which the soup actually originated.) Hủ tiếu is found
primarily in southern Vietnam.

Hủ tiếu Nam Vang’s broth is pork-based, and a serving comes with a chunk of pork
meat, a few shrimps, a boiled quail egg, lettuce and a few herbs, and boiled
bean sprouts. You can add about a tea-spoon of fish sauce to really bring out
the delicious flavor of the soup.

Hủ tiếu is a soup, but you can get a dry (broth-less) version, which I also
really like. Of course, everything is cooked; there’s just no broth. If you
still want the broth, you can ask for it on the side.

BÚN BÒ HUẾ

Bún bò Huế is a specialty from central Vietnam, more specifically the city
of Huế, the old imperial capital of the country.

The name is derived from the fact that the noodle is bún, a very common rice
noodle in Vietnam, and that the primary meat is beef, or bò in Vietnamese.

Like most Vietnamese dishes, bún bò Huế is very healthy, as it is mostly noodles
and vegetables, and not a lot of beef. In fact, I don’t typically eat beef, but
I make an exception for bún bò Huế!

Bún bò Huế is cooked with a hint of lemongrass, which is one of the most amazing
tastes in the Vietnamese food canon, giving it a bit of the kick of exotic
flavoring.

If you are feeling truly adventurous, try adding a small amount of shrimp paste,
a purple sauce that gives bún bò Huế its incredibly unique flavor. A word of
caution, though! Start with a very small amount and then add more if you like
it. Even many locals can’t handle shrimp paste. But if you can eat it, the
locals will be quite impressed.

BÚN RIÊU

Bún riêu is a real treat. For many Vietnamese, this is one of their favorite
soups. It’s made with a light tomato-based broth and a thinner rice noodle
(similar in size to hủ tiếu’s noodles). Then, freshly ground crab meat, sliced
tomatoes, stir-fried tofu, mint leaves, and bean sprouts are added and cooked
into the soup.

After being served, you can add an assortment of other ingredients to suit your
taste, such as shredded banana flowers, vinegar, sweet fish sauce, and tamarind
sauce.

For the adventurous, shrimp paste can be added to really bring out the flavor.
As mentioned above, start with a small quantity and work your way up, as this
sauce is quite intensely flavored.

This is a good start for now. Soups in Vietnam are viewed differently than the
way they are in the West. Whereas in the West, they are often complements to a
meal, in Vietnam, they ARE the meal. Just treat yourself to a bowl of any of the
above and you will quickly see why!

Bon appétit!
