How does global supply chain disruption impact the security industry?

Supply chain issues have plagued the economic recovery during and after the
COVID-19 pandemic, and the problems show every indication of persisting for
months or even years to come. Supply chain challenges have impacted the security
marketplace in many ways, reflecting the breadth and variety of products needed
to secure people, facilities, and assets. Wondering about the specifics of that
impact, we asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: How does disruption of the
global supply chain of components impact players across the security industry?

labour subcontracting services, will retain its brand and continue to serve as a
value-added service available through ADI. Central source "We identified Pro AV
as a growing category for ADI and our customers, and we continue to make
significant investments to broaden our reach and strengthen our market
position," said Cynthia Menna, vice president, and general manager, of Pro AV at
ADI. "Unifying less than one solid brand and providing a central source for our
Pro AV products portfolio will make it easier for customers to leverage ADI's
scale and resources to fuel new growth." The seamless omnichannel shopping
experience Customers can browse and purchase anytime from ADI through its
Digital Branch or ADI app Building upon ADI's strong global legacy of delivering
value, the integration extends the company's full value proposition to all Pro
AV customers across its North American business segment. With 115 branch
locations and 10 strategically located distribution centres across the region,
customers will benefit from the availability of more brands, more inventories,
more services, and more support. Additionally, customers can browse and purchase
anytime from ADI through its Digital Branch or ADI app. Whether shopping in a
branch, online, or through the mobile app, customers can expect the same
seamless omnichannel shopping experience at ADI. Easy and efficient installation
In addition to its product offering, ADI provides an array of support to help
customers discover new opportunities and make installations easier and more
efficient. HIS helps customers expand their AV capabilities and take on more

foundation to support decades of Pro AV growth for our customers, and our
industry. This change represents the next step in our strategy to make ADI the
indispensable Pro AV partner of choice,” said Menna.

ACaaS — The future of access control systems

Software as a Service (SaaS) provides computer equipment, OS, and software
customised to the user’s purposes as a service. Access control can work in the
same way. If you work in the physical security industry, especially concerning
access control, you have probably heard about the term ‘ACaaS’ recently. ACaaS
is a combination of ‘access control’ and ‘SaaS’ (Software as a Service). From a
semantic point of view, ACaaS means providing cloud-based access control
software as SaaS. Access control software is changing with the trends Cloud
systems are mainly classified as IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. IaaS (Infrastructure as a
Service) provides computing equipment and operational support from an external
cloud-based service provider. Amazon’s AWS or Microsoft Azure falls under this
category. According to their contracts, users can remotely control computing
equipment, provided by AWS and Azure. PaaS (Platform as a Service) is the
provision by an external service provider of an operating system (OS) and
various frameworks required for application development. SaaS goes one step
further, providing computing equipment, OS, and on-demand software services that
can deliver value quickly. The emergence of SaaS — what are the advantages?
Adopting SaaS enables them to receive software services, without having to
install and manage by themselves If you are not a developer nor in the software
development industry, then what you know as a ‘cloud service’ is probably SaaS.
Companies in various industries traditionally build their own infrastructure and
purchase expensive software to install on-premises. However, adopting SaaS
enables them to receive software services, without having to install and manage
by themselves, opting instead to pay a fixed monthly fee and access the software
on the cloud. The best example is Salesforce.com, which offers customer
relationship management (CRM) as SaaS, and Microsoft Office 365 and Google
Workspace, which offer productivity tools as SaaS. Continuous growth of the SaaS
market The SaaS market has been continuously growing since 2010. Salesforce.com
recorded the largest market share with its CRM SaaS model. At the same time,
Microsoft Office 365, a SaaS version of the traditional on-premises Microsoft
Office, has surpassed its competition in the productivity software industry. So,
what is driving the growth of the SaaS market? On the surface, SaaS is
recognised as a means of saving CAPEX and OPEX. However, its actual
cost-effectiveness might not be so significant, since the cost of SaaS-based
services tends to increase in proportion to the number of users and period of
use. SaaS-based services driven by quality of their features What most drives
SaaS-based services is the quality of their features, as determined by user
satisfaction. In contrast with the on-premises systems of the past, where
improvements came too slowly, as people could only provide feedback via email or
phone, SaaS allows companies to detect inconveniences directly from the system
and quickly respond. Considering the advantages of providing rapid feedback and
improvements, SaaS makes a big difference in terms of the quality of features
and user satisfaction. SaaS-based cloud services can create new opportunities,
by leveraging accumulated data Additionally, SaaS-based cloud services can
create new opportunities, by leveraging accumulated data. Using AI-based
analysis of data stored in the Cloud helps to provide unprecedented convenience
to the market. The best example of this could be Salesforce.com’s Einstein
service, which provides an analysis of customers' growth potential or risks.
Adopting ACaaS for cyber security ACaaS tries to incorporate all of the above
benefits associated with SaaS to access control software ACaaS tries to
incorporate all of the above benefits associated with SaaS to access control
software. However, the access control industry has been slow to adopt SaaS-based
cloud services, when compared to other industries. This is because the life
cycle of an access security system extends to around 10 years and many security
managers still assume that internal services are safest and external services
are unsafe. It is now becoming important to rethink whether it truly is the case
that internal systems are safe and external ones are not. For example, consider
‘intranets’, private networks unconnected from external networks, common use
until the early 2000s. Digital transformation and remote working We all gathered
together in the same place to work in the past. But with the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent digital transformation, working environments
have changed in various ways and places. Importantly, it is now very uncommon to
be cut off from the outside world with an intranet. Modern work and life require
a connection to the internet for communication with others and working remotely.
In this age where few truly private networks exist, the idea that external
services are unsafe may be misguided. SaaS-based ACaaS services The question
that matters most from a cyber security perspective is not whether the system is
internal or not, but whether the system is really secure. There are many
available administrative and technical solutions that secure systems, and many
standards, such as ISMS and ISO27001 exist for safer system management. These
solutions and standards make a system or service secure. SaaS-based ACaaS
services comply with these standards, meaning your systems are protected by
numerous experts and specialists. Of course, when selecting a solution, security
managers should consider whether the ACaaS is designed for and certified by a
standardised security framework. ACaaS — the future of access control systems
ACaaS will improve quality, making it more convenient, safe and quickly
responding to user feedback Access control software has long been regarded as a
complicated matter by security managers. Although it is complex technology by
nature, efforts to improve its convenience of usage have fallen short. For this
reason, we should pay attention to SaaS, which increases usability. As many
SaaS-based cloud services in other industries have shown, ACaaS will improve
quality, making it more convenient, safe and quickly responding to user
feedback. Furthermore, ACaaS will facilitate the development of safer and more
convenient systems, by leveraging AI analysis of accumulated data. Enhanced
safety and convenience For example, access control systems may add a feature to
identify abnormal behaviours and movements, based on existing access and
behavioural data, in order to predict and prevent possible incidents. Just as
SaaS-based cloud services in other industries have adopted an unprecedented
level of convenience with intelligent new features, ACaaS will also be able to
increase convenience and safety for companies and users, with intelligent new
features that could not be realised in previous times.

What are the security challenges of the transportation industry?

The transportation industry is unique because it plays a role in both the
minutiae of everyday life and the overall economy's well-being. Providing
uninterrupted and efficient transportation services depends heavily on the
safety and security of transportation entities. Due to the vast amount of people
frequenting transit stations and the importance of the items on ships and
ferries, the transportation sector faces multiple challenges that evolve as the
industry advances. We asked this week&rsqu...

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS

How was ISC West? What surprised you the most?

Arriving at ISC West 2022, it seemed almost as if the last three years hadn't
happened. The vibe and the energy seemed just as heightened as in 2019, and it
was almost as if the show had somehow gained momentum during the pandemic
downtime. For additional insights, we asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable:
How was ISC West? What surprised you the most?

What will be ‘the new normal’ for security?

Can we finally relax a little and announce that the pandemic is nearing an end?
With all the false starts and stops, it’s understandable if uncertainty
continues to be the dominant force. The apprehension that ruled at every stage
continues even as the pandemic (hopefully) ends. But what about ‘the new
normal?’ How will the industry need to reinvent itself in the post-pandemic
world? We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: As the industry transitions
back to in-person meetings, what will be the ‘new normal?’

What are the biggest misconceptions about biometrics?

Among the technologies widely used in the world of security, none is more
fraught with privacy concerns than biometrics. However, sometimes the privacy
concerns are based more on false information than on facts. Privacy must be
addressed, of course, but the industry should also promote greater understanding
of the technology as a means of combatting misinformation. We asked this week’s
Expert Panel Roundtable: What are the biggest misconceptions surrounding
biometrics? What is the impact?

CASE STUDIES

Dahua integrates their digital intelligence technologies to secure Yanqing's
Olympic Venues and Shougang Park

The Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games have come to a successful
end, with China setting a new medal record in its history of the Winter
Olympics. Dahua Technology took on the responsibility of securing Yanqing's
Olympic Venues and Shougang Park. Guided by the ‘Winter Olympics of Science and
Technology,’ Dahua fully integrated many digital intelligence technologies, such
as video Internet of Things, universal sensing, AIoT, and AR, into this grand
event, making great contributions to the success of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Digital intelligence technologies Located 75 kilometres northwest of Beijing's
city centre, Yanqing has two competition venues, the National Alpine Ski Centre
and the National Sliding Centre, and other supporting facilities, such as
Yanqing Olympic Village and Publishing Center. The entire zone is featured with
complex terrain and a changeful climate. Following the Winter Olympics, the
venue will be used for various sports competitions and athlete training Another
competition venue Big Air Shougang was located in Shougang Park. It staged the
freestyle skiing and snowboard Big Air competitions at the Games. Big Air
Shougang is the world's first permanent venue for Big Air. Following the Winter
Olympics, the venue will be used for various sports competitions and athlete
training. Meanwhile, many Olympic landmarks, such as offices for the Organising
Committee of the Winter Olympics and training venues, have been set up in
Shougang Park. The security of the wide range of roads, public areas, all kinds
of venues, and supporting facilities in the park was a top priority. Environment
monitoring system Dahua conducted several surveys in Yanqing Zone and tailored
various intelligent systems such as intelligent traffic camera, AR panoramic
solution, walk-through metal detector, ecological environment monitoring system
and so on for mountain scenarios. This not only provided a security guarantee
for the Winter Olympics events, athletes, audience and staff, but also
facilitated the security management of Yanqing's Olympic venues by improving the
overall prevention, early warning and management efficiency. The mountain road
to Yanqing's Olympic Venues is rugged and prone to traffic accidents at night,
especially under rain and snow. By upgrading the intelligent traffic camera
system in the core road sections, Dahua effectively solved the pollution caused
by the white light explosion and flash at night on mountain roads, improving the
safety of drivers and greatly reducing the incidence of traffic accidents.
Meanwhile, Dahua also realised real-time sensing and intelligent management of
vehicle entry and exit, which improved the road traffic management, traffic
safety, and civilised travel during the event. AR panoramic solution Dahua
created a large live map that displayed the venues and surrounding
infrastructures According to the geographical features of Yanqing Zone and the
complexity of management, Dahua innovated and deployed AR panoramic solution.
Combined with the full-realm sensing ability of IoT, Dahua created a large live
map that displayed the venues and surrounding infrastructures. Through the
panoramic map, the staff were able to supervise the overall dynamics and details
of the competition area at any time to conduct emergency operations and improve
management efficiency and safety. Dahua walk-through metal detector appeared at
the entrances of various venues, to help with fast temperature monitoring,
intelligent identification and early warning of not wearing a mask, and rapid
detection of metal contraband. This speeded up the traffic and reduced potential
security risks timely. The efficiency of security work was promoted at the same
time. Intelligent video sensing capability The sliding events bobsled, luge, and
skeleton are the fastest games in Winter Olympics. Racers moving through the
complex and narrow course at super speeds present an extraordinary challenge to
the judges’ scoring and of course to athletes’ safety as well. The Dahua
intelligent video tracking system provided data support for the athletes’
training Dahua Technology developed an intelligent video tracking system based
on their intelligent video sensing capability. The system captured the fleeting
video image of high-speed athletes sliding down the track, displayed the video
images of athletes passing through different slopes at high-speed seamlessly and
orderly, and recorded every detail of the entire competition. With zero
interference to the racing tracks, the Dahua intelligent video tracking system
provided data support for the athletes’ training before the competition and a
strong basis for the referee's decision and game's fairness during the
competition. Online monitoring system To facilitate the ‘Ecological Winter
Olympics,’ Dahua intelligent environment online monitoring system was in place
to collect environmental temperature, humidity, wind, wind direction, noise,
atmospheric pressure, weather and other data of the competition area all the
time, to help managers grasp the dynamic changes of various environmental
factors in real-time, and provide environmental data support for the events. In
the management center, Dahua built up a digital intelligent management platform
for Yanqing Zone by using video IoT and visualisation technologies including
Dahua high-definition LCD screen and distributed seat management system. In this
way, real-time views and visual scheduling of the overall operation of the whole
competition area were realised. Thus, real-time response and efficient command
in the case of emergencies were achieved, while refined management and
information decisions were supported. Access control management Dahua built a
comprehensive modern safety management system covering all roads In Shougang
Park, Dahua fulfilled the demand of intelligent management. By applying
intelligent panorama, multidimensional sensing, access control management, and
other artificial intelligence innovations, based on a unified intelligent
management platform, Dahua built a comprehensive modern safety management system
covering all roads, public places, and venues in and outside the Shougang Park.
It greatly realised the real-time warning of all kinds of risks in the park,
contributed to the innovative upgrade of the security management mode of the
park, comprehensively improved the comprehensive services and management of the
Winter Olympics. On the field, the Winter Olympics athletes were competing
fiercely for medals; outside the stadium, Dahua technical team was trying their
best to provide services for both Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Yanqing
Zone, Shougang Park, National Conference Center and other perimeter areas.
Scenario-oriented application They pushed their limits and accomplished the task
of securing the Olympic venues successfully in more than two consecutive months.
The team delivered high-quality services including video technology development
for specific events, solution formulation, installation and commissioning, and
on-site technical support, helping to create a simple, secure, and wonderful
Winter Olympics. Dahua provided security services with high quality and high
standards. Based on technology innovations and scenario-oriented application of
digital intelligence, it has contributed to the success of many wonderful urban
activities and boosted digital intelligence upgrades in thousands of industries.
In the future, Dahua will continue to focus on customer needs and create more
products and solutions for customers through innovative technologies.
