DISGRACED SOLDIER JAILED FOR STASHING DEADLY WEAPONS ARSENAL AT ARMY BASE

A soldier has been jailed after he stashed a deadly arsenal of weapons and
explosives on a British army base.
Vincent Crockford, 28, hid sawn-off shotguns, grenades, ammunition and
bomb-making chemicals in the boot of his Mercedes.
He was arrested after the sports car - thought to be abandoned - was removed
from his barracks and sent to a scrap dealer.
Officers also found a copy of "the Anachist's Cookbook," a Provisional IRA
handbook, and a recipe for a nitro-glycerine bomb.
Jailing the paratrooper for eight years, Judge John Dodd QC said: "This was a
terrifying arsenal of weapons."
The lethal haul was discovered by chance in September last year during a
clean-up at Merville Barracks near Colchester, Essex.
Crockford's Mercedes was wrongly thought to be abandoned and handed over to a
scrap dealer.
After finding the weapons the man immediately contacted police. When Crockford
returned from leave to find his car was gone he walked into a Military Police
office and reported it stolen.
PROMOTED STORIES
He was arrested and answered no comment to all questions. Police found his
laptop and iPhone had been used to investigate how to build bombs, silencers for
weapons and adapt guns to fire different types of ammunition.
Crockford, a corporal in the Parachute Regiment, later claimed he had been set
up by "enemies in his regiment" and said the items had been planted.
But a jury saw through his lies and he was jailed at Chelmsford Crown Court on
Friday.
The soldier, of Colchester, Essex, was found guilty of possessing illegal
firearms, possessing ammunition without a firearms certificate and possessing
explosive substances.

Ian Bourne, defending, told the court of his client's 13 years' service which
included time spent overseas in Northern Ireland, Iraq and three tours of
Afghanistan.
Mr Bourne added that, despite thorough investigation, no link had been made
between Crockford and any terrorist organisation.
Crockford now faces being dismissed with disgrace from the Army.
