COIN VALUES

We all know that every coin has a specific value.  A quarter is worth 25 cents,
a dime is worth 10.  But many people don’t realize that certain coins have a
value far beyond their face value.  Many coins have numismatic value.



Numismatic value is based on a few factors.  The coin’s condition or quality is
a big factor.  The better the condition, the more valuable the coin.  The rarity
of the coin also determines its price.  Demand is also a factor.  The demand for
the coin will raise the price as well.   The actual value of a coin can vary a
multitude depending on these factors and others.

You don’t even have to have gold or silver coins to get paid a substantial
amount.  Numerous pennies, nickels, and quarters sell for thousands of dollars

Another misconception is that coins have to be 100 years old before they are
worth money.  This is not true.  The 1992 close AM penny is worth thousands of
dollars!  The record for this variety in MS67RD is $25,850. Click here to check
out the original auction!  MS67RD stands for Mint State 67 Red which is the
grade of the coin.

 


 

Go to eBay and look around at all the coins listed for sale.  Thousands of coins
sell on eBay every day!  There are many different types of valuable coins, but
one of the most sought-after is the error coin.  When a coin is minted, it goes
through many different inspections to make sure the quality is perfect.  But, as
we all know, sometimes people make mistakes.  Error coins are just little
mistakes that slip past inspection and enter into circulation.  This is why you
should always check your pocket change! There are a million different types of
errors that can occur.  Some are valuable, while others are worthless.  Find out

These two coins pictured are both off-center error coins.  During the minting
process, the blank planchet is struck with a die, which gives the coin its
image.  If the planchet is incorrectly aligned with the die, the image will then
be off-center.  The farther off-center the image is, the more value the coin

This is just one type of valuable coin that can be found by cherry-picking.  The
term “Cherrypicking” means to look for coins with value beyond their face
value.  The Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare Die Varieties in the United States is
THE book for finding and attributing valuable coins.  This is the book that ALL
coin stores use to determine different values for different variety error
coins.  The book is a little pricey, but it is worth every penny!  Go grab a
copy from eBay or Amazon while you still can because they are getting harder and
harder to find!  This is part of the reason for the price of the book being
higher than usual.
