HOW TO CONTROL COSTS ON YOUR PATH TO CARBON NEUTRALITY

 * Efficiency First: How To Control Costs On Your Path To Carbon Neutrality with
   PAS 2060

The days of climate change being put on the backburner have long gone. So much
so, that the UK government has set a target for all businesses to achieve net
zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In response, some organisations have
bulldozed their way to carbon neutrality by purchasing huge carbon offsetting
contracts.

This method is simple and gets quick results, but it can be extremely costly and
doesn’t necessarily reduce emissions. It also has the potential to set harmful
trends for smaller companies that may not be able to afford large offsetting
deals. By prioritising efficiency, however, you can save money on two fronts,
without blocking the path to carbon neutrality.

Below, we discuss the financial benefits of an efficiency-first approach, and
explain how to implement this in your organisation.

WHAT IS EFFICIENCY FIRST?

Rather than speeding towards the quickest solution to meet the government's 2050
target, efficiency first is when you identify the root cause of your emissions.
Whether it’s streamlining operations or following many other energy-efficient
initiatives, taking the time to implement this, instead of jumping straight to
carbon offsetting, can be beneficial in the long run.

HOW WILL IT BENEFIT MY ORGANISATION?

In reality, most businesses will have to commit to a level of carbon offsetting
to achieve carbon neutrality. Some emissions simply can’t be avoided – but some
can. Following an efficiency-first strategy means you’ll be able to reduce your
organisation's carbon footprint as much as possible. In doing so, you lower the
amount of offsetting required to achieve your target, resulting in a cheaper
contract.

And this isn’t the only money-saving opportunity. By choosing energy-efficient
solutions in your building, you’ll only use what you need – cutting costs on
electricity bills, for example. With more efficiency, you’ll also take the
strain off your physical appliances, preventing overuse and potential downtime
for repairs.

WHERE DO I BEGIN?

Deciding to take an efficiency-first approach is the first step. But how do you
achieve it? Here are a few methods that organisations worldwide are using to
reduce their carbon footprint and save on offsetting costs:

 * Smart meters
 * Sensor systems
 * Hibernate unused computers
 * Avoid erratic air conditioning use
 * Encourage and demonstrate a greener commute e.g. cycle, car pool

Every company operates under different constraints and circumstances, so not all
of these methods will be achievable. The good news is, there’s something else
you can try. If you want to equip your organisation with energy- and
cost-efficient strategies to reach carbon neutrality, the PAS 2060 Standard is
exactly what you need.
