SCIENTISTS PUT A NUMBER TO LIFE-SAVING CAPABILITIES OF TREES AT ARAVALLI

Over 2 lakh trees at Aravalli Biodiversity Park have 9,107.9 tonnes of carbon,
worth Rs 12.4 crore, stored in them. The carbon sequestered annually is 1,253.07
tonnes, worth Rs 1.7 crore. The amount of water rechargeable by these trees is
1,10,977.0 ft3/per year annually and is worth Rs 5.9 lakh.
Aravalli Biodiversity Park

NEW DELHI: Over 2 lakh trees at Aravalli Biodiversity Park have 9,107.9 tonnes
of carbon, worth Rs 12.4 crore, stored in them. The carbon sequestered annually
is 1,253.07 tonnes, worth Rs 1.7 crore.
The amount of water rechargeable by these trees is 1,10,977.0 ft3/per year
annually and is worth Rs 5.9 lakh. These interesting facts have been revealed by
a study on carbon sequestration, which essentially means the process of removal
and storing of atmospheric carbon-dioxide.



The study, which began in January, has been carried out by scientists from
Aravalli Biodiversity Park, in collaboration with professor Yamini Gupt and her
research scholars, department of business economics, University of Delhi.




It has also revealed that the pollution removal efficiency of these trees is
14.627 tonnes/year and is worth Rs 1.8 crore. Gupt said, "The biodiversity parks
were set up for the revival of ecosystems and to benefit from the services
provided by them. The study will make the authorities, and the public, aware of
the money that has been saved by the park by reducing the pollution load in the
area. It will educate people about the benefits of creating and maintaining such
parks."


The carbon stored and sequestered (fixed annually) in the ground biomass of
grown-up trees (15-18 years old), and the avoidance runoff (rechargeable water)
and pollution removal by these trees, were estimated using a global model,
i-Tree Eco Software Suite, developed by the United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service: i-Tree Eco tool. The researchers calculated
the values in the study by using several parameters of trees, including the
diameter of the trunk, height of canopy and the light received by the tree. The
values in rupees were derived after using the international value of carbon.
CR Babu, professor emeritus, Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded
Ecosystems (CEMDE), said, "The study highlights the role of Aravalli
Biodiversity Park in mitigation and adaptation to climate change and building
climate resilience, through storage of carbon and sequestering carbon annually,
besides avoidance of runoff and pollution removal." He added that a similar
study would be done at all biodiversity parks of the city.
Besides, studies on the role of Aravalli Biodiversity Park in reduction in heat
load and preservation of heat islands and enhancement of air quality are being
conducted in collaboration with Delhi Technical University and NEERI.
Shah Hussain, scientist incharge, Aravalli Biodiversity Park, said: "About 80%
of the landscape is rocky and barren area. The scientists here have ecologically
transformed the barren, mined out landscape into luxuriant native Aravalli
vegetation with a variety of forest communities with canopies reaching to height
of 45 feet."
