HI THERE, I’M JAKE.

I make things for brands.
Or just for my own amusement.
I’ve written raps for Bleacher Report,
Hacked doorbell cameras for Reebok,
Convinced Allstate to commit a felony,
And forced Audi to give up car porn.
I put myself through opioid withdrawal.
Invented a place called ‘Sucktown’,
And made grown men act like dinosaurs.
My work graces the front page of Reddit,
The permanent collection at MOMA,
And the back of Earl Morris’ interrotron;
Receiving Vimeo ‘Staff Picks’,
Titanium Lions at Cannes,
And Webby Special Achievements.
I tend to fully commit to big ideas,
Search for humanity above all,
And be unafraid of the unsolvable.
There’s probably more to say,
But if we’re being honest,
No one likes a writer
Who can’t craft
To a space.

CLIENT: Next Insurance     DESIGN: Collins     ILLUSTRATION: Caspar Wain

After a decade working in agencies, I went in-house to lead a full rebrand at a
$4B Sillicon Valley start-up; reimagining logo, design system, tagline, tone of
voice, all the way down to where they sourced their coffee and who made their
corporate swag.

The rebrand was recognized by Cannes, The One Show, D&AD, Art Director’s Club
and more. Below is a case study that attempts to encapsulate everything we made
over the course of a year and half in a litte over a minute and a half.

And just for fun, here's what the brand looked like when I was hired.

CLIENT: Personal

A low-lying curb tragically forced me to say goodbye to my phone forever. R.I.P.
iPhone 11 (Jan 2020 - Feb 2020).

Memorial at California and Kearney in San Francisco.

CLIENT: NEXT Insurance      AGENCY: In-house

Reimagined a universally despised audio space, turning captive listeners waiting
“on-hold” into a media platform for up-and-coming artists.

RECOGNITION: One Show 2022 (Innovation in music/sound craft), One Show 2022
(Brandside/In-House)

CLIENT: Bleacher Report     ORIGINAL MUSIC: Blackalicious     ANIMATION:
Gentlemen Scholar

Partnered with Blackalicious to reimagine their classic “Alphabet Aerobics” as
seen through the sports-obsessed mind of B/R.

Campaign Results: 90M impressions, 3M views, a Spotify single with 200k plays,
recognition from Cannes Lions, The One Show, Clios, Andys, LIAs, Webbys, AICP,
CommArts, and earned media from Pitchfork, Billboard, Spin, XXL and 30+
additional press outlets.

CLIENT: Reebok     INFLUENCERS: Cardi B, Shaq, Conor MacGregor, Noah Schapp, et
al

Turned Ring doorbell cameras into new media; having celebrities literally drop
Reebok's new sneaker on fan’s front doorsteps.

Campaign Results: 740M+ impressions, recognition from Cannes, One Show, D&AD,
Clios, Webbys, Hatch, Addys, plus earned media from Good Morning America, Vogue,
Rolling Stone, Billboard, Complex, HypeBeast, and 100+ other unique press
articles.

CLIENT: Personal

Put myself through 48 hours of simulated opioid withdrawal to help raise
awareness about the stigmas surrounding addiction.

Recognition: USA Today, Muse by Clio, Shots, SFegotist, Little Black Book,
Adweek, Ads of the world, Creativity, The Drum. And more importantly, this video
is now part of Overdose Lifeline's stigma reduction training courses which are
used in 33 states nationwide.

CLIENT: Next Insurance      ANIMATION: Buck      ORIGINAL MUSIC: Barking Owl

Loudly—and, err, colorfully—admitted that our category sucks, as a way of
announcing our plan to fix said suckiness.

RECOGNITION: The One Show, Brand New, Transform Magazine, Graphic USA, It’s Nice
That, and all the ad trades.

CLIENT: Allstate     DIRECTOR: Jeff Tremaine      EDITOR: Kirk Baxter

Used The College Football Playoff to teach the world a lesson about the dangers
of oversharing on social media.

Capmaign Results: 18% increase in home insurance policy sales, 33M Page Views,
#1 Trending Topic on Twitter, recognized by Cannes Lions, One Show, D&AD, ADC,

additional press outlets.

CLIENT: Audi     DIRECTOR: Martin De Thurah     EDITOR: Stewart Reeves

Worked as senior writer on Audi for years, convincing them to tell stories about
people, not cars. This first spot aired on The Oscars.

CLIENT: Audi      DIRECTOR: Craig Gillespie     EDITOR: Rick Russell

Another favorite—created for the premiere of Handmaid’s Tale—finds a man trapped
in a dismal future world filled with driverless cars.

CLIENT: GolfNow     DIRECTOR: Jason Farrand     EDITOR: Jim Hutchins

The Golf Channel asked for a memorable way to announce their new tee-time
booking app; so we give them memorable, damnit.

CLIENT: Personal

For three and a half years, every time my (now wife) asked me to take a photo of
her, I secretly ran the video instead.

Campaign results: Despite my endless trolling, she said yes!!

CLIENT: Reebok     DIRECTOR: Henry Hobson     EDITOR: Stewart Reeves

Launched Reebok’s new running shoe technology by putting the man with the
fastest feet in the world in a place not of it.

CLIENT: MY EGO

I’ve had work recognized by every major international award show (Cannes! D&AD!
ADC! One Show! Clio!) at every single stop I’ve made in my career.
Sciencey-types might say that implies “causation”, but I have no way of ever
finding out.

CLIENT: Audi      DIRECTOR: Sam Piling     EDITOR: Shane Reid

Fulfilled my lifelong dream of writing a horror flick; the spot becoming one of
very few brand ads recognized with a Vimeo Staff Pick.

CLIENT: Personal      DIRECTOR: Ivan Cash

Seperately, I walked around Chicago with my friend Ivan asking strangers to show
us the last picture they’d taken on thier cell phones.

CLIENT: Omaha Steaks      DIRECTOR: Errol Morris      EDITOR: Arielle Zakowski

Made a short film about all the beautiful, bizzare things that connect us to our
families, even when we’re thousands of miles apart.

CLIENT: Allstate

Way before any brand was on Vine -- back when Vine still existed -- we created a
series of real-time response videos for March Madness. Every time there was an
upset, Mayhem would post a new video, relishing in the country’s collective
failure.

CLIENT: Personal

In 2011, I decided to live for 90 days without technology. No cell phone. No
email. No internet. And no TV. Aside from being the most blissful three months
of my life, it also ended up being an amazing career move. My story - and the
incredibly cringe-worthy video I made about the experience - got picked up by
the popular press and then a recruiter at Leo Burnett Chicago inexplicabally
offered me my first job in advertising.

Recognition: The video racked up 5 million views online, with coverage from The
Today Show, The Tonight Show, GMA, Ellen, USA Today, CNN, Yahoo!, and 20+
additional press outlets. Plus, for some insane reason, an executive at Sony
Screen Gems called and asked me to sell them the rights to, and write a
screenplay treatment about my story. Which, of course, is still sitting on a
shelf collecting dust somehwere.

CLIENT: Next Insurance

When small businesses everywhere had to shut down -- instead of making an ad
saying “we’re in this together” -- we took our entire marketing budget and
started hiring small business owners; getting them back to work any way we
could.

CLIENT: Personal      DESIGN: Byron Wages      CODE: Chris Baker
