WHAT'S NEXT LEGALLY FOR TRUMP AFTER INDICTMENT

What's next legally for Trump after indictment

Photo: Brandon Bell/Getty Images

Former President Trump's historic indictment sets up a legal proceeding that may
look similar to parts of routine felony arrest processing in New York.

Yes, but: It's anything but standard as no sitting or former president has ever
faced criminal charges.

THE LEGAL WOES SURROUNDING TRUMP AND HIS MANHATTAN INDICTMENT

Data: Axios research; Table: Jacque Schrag/Axios

Former president Trump's indictment is just one of several legal challenges
bearing down on the leading 2024 Republican presidential candidate.

Why it matters: The indictment is historic — no U.S. president has ever before
faced criminal charges — but the legal woes swirling around Trump don't stop
with the Manhattan district attorney.

TRUMP'S BIGGER LEGAL DANGER

Trump's bigger legal danger

Democrats, Trump insiders and legal experts all agree: The investigation into
former President Trump's handling of classified documents poses a far more
dangerous threat to his freedom than the indictment in New York.

Why it matters: A year from now, Trump may look back with envy at the sordid
hush money case that brought him to Tuesday's historic arraignment — the first
for a former president, but potentially not the last.

California’s April snowpack is among the largest in state history, tied with

FINLAND BECOMES 31ST MEMBER OF NATO

Finland becomes 31st member of NATO

over to Secretary of State Tony Blinken. Photo: Johanna Geron/AFP via Getty

Finland became the 31st member of NATO on Tuesday — a once-unthinkable step that
significantly changes the security landscape in Europe.

Why it matters: Finland's membership more than doubles NATO's borders with
Russia and formally ends Helsinki's decades of official nonalignment. It's also
a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin who, in launching the Russian
invasion of Ukraine, vowed to block the alliance's eastward expansion.

A CONVINCING AI-MADE VIDEO THAT TELLS ON ITSELF

A convincing AI-made video that tells on itself

Image: Truepic

Several leaders in AI have teamed up to create what they are calling the first
transparent deepfake — a video that looks convincingly real, but is both
synthetically created and makes use of an emerging standard to label itself as
such.

Why it matters: Many in the field say concerns over synthetic media are no
longer hypothetical and that now is the time to start clearly labeling how
content was created or altered.

The U.S. economy is healthy — and is going to remain healthy for decades to
come. So says JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon in his annual shareholder letter,
released Tuesday morning.

Why it matters: Dimon's sunny outlook stands in stark contrast to his dark
warnings 10 months ago, when he forecast an impending "hurricane."

Tech layoffs are way up — and so are tech stocks. Two charts tell this story.

The big picture: The tech industry's layoffs began last year and have kept up a
relentless stream of bleak announcements — in some companies' cases, like

AI-powered robots could fix recycling's biggest problems

conveyor belt in a Waste Connections recycling facility. Photo courtesy of AMP

The U.S. recycling industry is starting to get a helping hand from robots, which
can sort trash faster and more safely than humans, and artificial intelligence,
which gathers valuable data about what's been thrown out.

Why it matters: Automation could help solve recycling's many problems, including
the rise in hard-to-recycle plastic waste and consumer botch-ups that lead to
contaminated recycling streams.

VIEW FROM TAIPEI: TWO PRESIDENTIAL VISITS CAPTIVATE TAIWAN

View from Taipei: Two presidential visits captivate Taiwan

Ying-jeou. Photos: Lev Radin/Anadolu Agency and Cai Yang/Xinhua via Getty Images

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Current Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen's visit to the U.S.
and former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou's unprecedented trip to China have
reignited debate within Taiwan about the island's future — and the nature of its
relationship with mainland China.

Why it matters: With Taiwan's next presidential election less than a year away —
and pressure from China growing — Taiwanese voters will soon face a choice
between keeping the close U.S. ties forged by Tsai's Democratic Progressive
Party and reverting to the rival Beijing-friendly stance of Ma's Kuomintang
party.

Data: Dave's Redistricting Atlas, Daily Kos, New York Times; Table: Simran
Parwani/Axios

House Democrats' campaign arm is homing in on districts won by former President
Trump in its efforts to expand the 2024 House map.

Why it matters: The move builds on the 19 districts targeted by House Dems'
primary super PAC, including by adding a half dozen GOP incumbents it sees as
particularly weak or vulnerable despite holding safer districts.

MANUFACTURING COMES OFF ITS HIGH BOIL

Data: FactSet; Chart: Axios Visuals

So far in 2023, the flow of economic data has been a story of ups and downs:
first, with several weeks of signs that the economy was slowing and inflation
fading, then several weeks of data suggesting boom times were still here.

 * With the first significant economic release of April (reflecting March
activity), we're back on the downward part of the roller coaster.
