RETRENCHED PMET DRIVING FOR A LIVING SAYS HE CAN’T AFFORD TO SPEND HIS LAST DAYS
IN SINGAPORE

Yee Loon - May 12, 2023 0
Jeffrey Khoo, Deputy Organising Secretary of the Progress Singapore Party,
recently shared his encounter and conversation with a local driver on his
Facebook page. In his post, Mr Khoo recounted how he took a ride to attend a
meeting in town, and during their conversation, he learned that the driver was
formerly a seasoned PMET as well. Difficulty to find job, main reason for
rejection was "too old" Despite actively seeking job opportunities, the driver
faced difficulty securing employment due to ageism. "For the companies that
interviewed him, the main reason for rejection was that he was too old."
Although it is already a common story these days, what caught Jeffrey's
attention was the driver's deep disappointment in not being able to retire in
Singapore due to the high cost of living.

DEFLECTING AND DIVERTING INSTEAD OF FIXING SYSTEM AND POLICIES

Augustine Low - May 9, 2023 55
In this opinion piece, Augustine Low criticizes ministers for deflecting
responsibility and avoiding solutions to pressing issues like high cost of
living and housing affordability. Low calls out the ministers' statements on
rising incomes as insufficient explanations for these problems and urges the
government to focus on addressing the concerns of the living instead of
prioritizing "people not yet born."

SINGAPORE NEEDS TO MOVE AWAY FROM ITS BROKEN SYSTEM OF COE

The Online Citizen - May 5, 2023 39
In this opinion piece by Robin Low, he argues that motorcycle dealerships in
Singapore have been exploiting the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) system,
causing hardship for lower-income families and delivery businesses. He points
out the flaws in the COE and Temporary COE (tCOE) systems and calls for a
reevaluation of the approach, particularly regarding electric motorcycles, in
order to create a more equitable and sustainable future.

CAN’T AFFORD TO MATCH THE COMPETITION BUT CAN AFFORD THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE
CABINET

Augustine Low - May 4, 2023 106
DPM Lawrence Wong recently admitted Singapore cannot outbid the "big boys" for
investments, emphasizing the need for ingenuity and innovation. However, with
the world's most expensive cabinet, one would expect Singapore to outperform the
competition. Instead, Singaporeans see misplaced priorities such as raising GST
amid high inflation and reviewing sky-high political salaries. Low argues that
It's time for these highly-paid leaders to focus on the right challenges.

WHEN AUTHORITIES MISREPRESENT FACTS WHILE WITHHOLDING EVIDENCE THAT DEBUNKS
THEIR NARRATIVE

Terry Xu - May 2, 2023 8
Terry Xu discusses an incident involving an elderly woman and police officers,
questioning the truth behind the police's claims and how the Singapore media
reported it. He highlights the Correction Direction issued under POFMA, the
refusal to share bodycam footage, and the eventual revelation that the police's
narrative was inaccurate. The article raises concerns about the implications for
those fighting false allegations and an unjust system.

THEY PROMISE US THE MOON AND THE STARS BUT WHAT WE SEE GOING UP...

Augustine Low - May 2, 2023 39
In an opinion piece by Augustine Low, the author critiques Deputy Prime Minister
Lawrence Wong's recent May Day speech, comparing it to an election rally speech.
Low points out the numerous pledges and promises made but also highlights a list
of concerns left unaddressed, such as cost increases in various aspects of life
in Singapore. The author asserts that more people are growing fearful and
struggling to cope with these cost increases, and they can't rely on promises of
sunshine and rainbows alone.

DISINFORMATION ADDS DARK NOTE TO PIVOTAL TURKISH ELECTION

The Online Citizen - May 12, 2023 0
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has presented a manipulated video montage
as proof that his rival in the upcoming election, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, is in
alliance with Kurdish militants. Kilicdaroglu alleges that "foreign hackers"
recruited by Erdogan's team are preparing deepfakes to discredit rivals before
the election. Disinformation, including manipulated videos, has become a weapon
in the political battle, causing a polarized atmosphere in Turkey.

PAKISTAN EX-PM KHAN TO APPEAR IN COURT AFTER ‘UNLAWFUL’ ARREST

The Online Citizen - May 12, 2023 0
Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's arrest was ruled unlawful by the
Supreme Court, prompting his appearance in court. Although Khan remains in
custody, the government plans to re-arrest him if released, leading to further
unrest. Khan, who has accused leaders and the military of plotting his
assassination, faces numerous legal cases in what critics view as an attempt to
stifle dissent. Supporters celebrated the overturning of his arrest, but
analysts believe Khan still faces significant challenges ahead of upcoming
elections.

PHILIPPINE DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE AGAINST DUTERTE CRITIC DISMISSED

The Online Citizen - May 12, 2023 0
Philippine human rights campaigner Leila de Lima was acquitted on one of two
drug trafficking charges, bringing her closer to freedom. Supporters gathered
outside the court, chanting for her release. Although she remains in jail,
awaiting a judge's decision on bail, the acquittal marks the "beginning of her
vindication." De Lima, known for investigating extrajudicial killings, was
arrested in 2017 on what many believe are fabricated charges in retaliation for
her opposition to President Duterte's drug war. The UN Working Group on
Arbitrary Detention has called for her release.

The Online Citizen - May 11, 2023 18
Lim Tean, Leader of the Peoples Voice, disputes Minister of State (MOS) for
Trade and Industry Alvin Tan's claim that family offices have not impacted
Singapore's private property market or contributed to inequality. Mr Lim accuses
the government of creating a playground for the ultra-rich, driving talented
Singaporeans away due to rising rental and property prices, and questions the
MOS' statements on the impact of foreign funds on the economy.

Yee Loon - May 11, 2023 15
NCMP Leong Mun Wai's proposals to offer more resources and support to opposition
MPs, NCMPs, and Nominated Members of Parliament were rejected by Leader of the
House, Indranee Rajah. She argued that current rules provide sufficient
opportunity for MPs to hold the government accountable and engage in debate. Mr
Leong's suggestions included establishing a research department within the
Parliament Secretariat, increasing allowances for hiring legislative and
secretarial assistants, and strengthening the opposition's role.

Yee Loon - April 18, 2023 11
Singaporean busker, Jonathan Goh, has criticised the National Arts Council (NAC)
for the difficulties he faced in renewing his busking permit. Previously,
experienced buskers were granted a two-year permit, but the NAC changed it to a
one-year validity for everyone after lifting busking restrictions last year.
Despite being a seasoned performer, Mr Goh is required to undergo a physical
audition for five minutes in front of a panel of judges to assess his street
performance skills, which he believes is outdated. The NAC defended the physical
auditions to provide "fair and open opportunities for everyone".

HARMFUL GAY STEREOTYPES

Yee Loon - April 6, 2023 3
Mediacorp's TV drama "Silent Walls" has received criticism from some members of
the LGBTQ community for perpetuating harmful gay stereotypes. The criticism was
primarily driven by an article from online LGBTQ+ publication Dear Straight
People, which called out the relationship between two characters, citing their
"problematic" large age gap as well as reinforcing the harmful stereotype that
gay men are predators and groomers. The storyline was also criticized for
implying that gay men are all diseased and promiscuous, suggesting that gay
couples will always meet a tragic fate.
