TELESCOPE FOR NASA’S ROMAN MISSION COMPLETE, DELIVERED TO GODDARD

Project News • November 14th, 2024

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is one giant step closer to unlocking
the mysteries of the universe. The mission has now received its final major
delivery: the Optical Telescope Assembly, which includes a 7.9-foot (2.4-meter)
primary mirror, nine additional mirrors, and supporting structures and
electronics.

NASA’S NEOWISE SPACECRAFT RE-ENTERS ATMOSPHERE, BUT MORE DISCOVERIES AWAIT!

Project News • November 4th, 2024

NASA’s NEOWISE (Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer)
spacecraft re-entered and burned up in Earth’s atmosphere on Friday night, as
expected. Launched in 2009 as the WISE mission, the spacecraft has been mapping
the entire sky at infrared wavelengths over and over for nearly fifteen years.
During that time, more than one hundred thousand amateur scientists have used
these data in citizen science projects like the Milky Way Project, Disk
Detective, Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, Backyard Worlds: Cool Neighbors, and
Exoasteroids.

WHY NASA’S SPHEREX MISSION WILL MAKE ‘MOST COLORFUL’ COSMIC MAP EVER

News Release • October 31st, 2024 •

The space telescope will detect over 100 colors from hundreds of millions of
stars and galaxies. Here’s what astronomers will do with all that color.

OUR MISSION

IPAC at Caltech partners with NASA, NSF, JPL and the world-wide research
community to advance exploration of our Universe. Beginning with the IRAS
mission in 1983 and spanning through 2MASS, Spitzer, Herschel, Planck,
WISE/NEOWISE and Euclid in recent years, we have enabled transformative research
of the entire sky. We provide science operations, user support, archives and
data services, and scientific vision to maximize discovery with observatories
both in space and on the ground. Next up, Lunar Trailblazer, SPHEREx, Roman, NEO
Surveyor, and UVEX are all preparing to launch in the year and years ahead. We
share these advances and discoveries with everyone through education outreach
programs and award-winning communications. Our community of active researchers
is dedicated and essential to fulfilling this mission.
