News 4 WAYS TO GET YOUR HOME SUMMER-READY AHEAD OF AUSTRALIA'S HEATWAVE SEASON Presented by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries First published 9 Nov 2023, 2:15pm Experts have told us it’s going to be a very hot summer, with El Nino now officially declared. Here are some tips on getting your home ready for the heat. Heatwaves, bushfires, droughts, floods… Those are all, unfortunately, too familiar during an Australian summer. And weather experts are predicting this summer could be one of our hottest and driest yet. It’s all because of El Nino, which is no stranger to Australians. In fact, the last El Nino was partly responsible for our hottest year on record in 2019, and the devastating bushfires that came with it. Sydney is expected to swelter into summer, with temperatures reaching soaring heights. Here are four of them. 1. DO AN AUDIT OF YOUR HOME Is your home fully prepared for the extreme weather? To answer this question, have a look at the various aspects of you house where the heat is likely to seep in, and the cold out air out. Check the insulation in your walls and roof, for example, ensuring they’re in good condition. Inspect your windows and doors, sealing any gaps or cracks. Make sure your roof is free from damage or leaks, which will help prevent heat from entering your home. Try to keep the areas you’re looking to cool as small as possible, which will ensure your cooling unit is not working overtime. 2. LIMIT YOUR EXPOSURE TO THE SUN This isn’t another slip, slop, slap warning – it’s about ensuring your home is also protected from the heat as much as possible. During the heat of the day, always close your blinds to keep things cool inside. Where possible, keep your curtains, blind or shutters closed. By doing so, you can keep your rooms cooler. 3. GET YOUR HOUSE AIRCON READY Speaking of keeping cool, the extreme heat will mean that you will need reliable air conditioning to help you stay cool. If you already have an air-con, make sure you to have your unit serviced if you haven’t already, so a technician can check gas levels and other things. While you’re at it, be sure to clean your filters as well. If you’re ready to upgrade or buy a new air conditioner for this summer, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has you covered, with options for both big and small homes. The Bronte® series - better for those who have large rooms to keep cool - was named 2023’s best-rated split system by ProductReview, Australia’s most comprehensive consumer opinion site. “[It has] advanced blade technology to efficiently deliver an industry leading, long reach airflow making it perfect for larger spaces,” Graham Hamilton, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Senior Sales Advisor says. Before summer, make sure you air conditioner is in full working order. HAVE YOUR BACKUP PLAN READY TO GO Finally, if you’re in a bushfire-prone area, you’re most likely already aware of what needs to be done. But even if you’re not, having some small contingencies can put your mind at ease. A small emergency kit of essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and the like, can help in the event of power outages. Have a communication strategy for family members in case you need to leave your home, and make sure everyone knows about it. If you have some furry members of the family, ensure they always have access to shade and fresh water. Considered as the most independently awarded air-conditioning brand in Australia, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is leading supplier of premium residential and commercial air-conditioning systems.
