WHAT IS SPOKESIMALS MIDWEST?



Spokesimals is taking a long cat-nap and no longer posting new content, but you
can read about the campaign below.

Spokesimals are animals—from pups to pigs—who step into the limelight to spread
education about mental health.

More than 40 million people in the United States have a mental health condition.
And while these mental health conditions are very common, people with them are
often made to feel alone or different.

Here at Spokesimals Midwest, we use animals and pets to spread simple messages
of encouragement and facts about mental health to everyone!

GOLD KEY

Did you ever meet a chicken you didn't find eggs-cellent? Gold Key is a super
soft, fluffy chick-a-dee who knows it's the little things (like cuddles and
fresh eggs) that make someone's day im-peck-able.

Everybody's feathers get ruffled from time to time, because mental health is

Blueberries aren't in season in Nebraska quite yet, but Blue is
scrumdiddlyumptious no matter the time of year. She is super energetic, loves to
play "keep away from mom" (it's like if fetch and hide and seek had a baby), and
will climb on laps for snuggles. A lot of new moms are familiar with the baby
blues: a mild depression that usually occurs right after birth and can last for
up to two weeks. But many moms are also familiar with postpartum depression,
which is longer-lasting and more severe. Having postpartum depression doesn't
make anyone a "bad mom," and help is out there for anyone who needs it. Okay,
ladies, now let's get in formation and talk with our health care providers about
treatment options.

His name: Rebel
His cause: Making you feel all the warm 'n' fuzzies inside

Rebel is a biiiit of a troublemaker (not surprising with a name like Rebel), but
he's also the must cuddly, super chill being. Hear that? He's chill, but not
chilly. He's cool, but he'll never ice you out. Cats get a bad rap for being
icy, freezy, frigid. But every cat is different — some like to do their own
thing, and some like Rebel want to help thaw you out. Every person is different,
too; it's unfair to say that everyone with anorexia is X (where "X" means female
or skinny) or everyone with PTSD is Y (where "Y" means male or a veteran).
People with the same diagnosis can be totally different people because — ding,
ding — they aren't defined by those diagnoses.

Laney is the pawfect pup for any lane, street, drive, or avenue. Basically,
wherever you live, Laney will be right up your alley. Laney came to
@NEHumaneSociety as a stray who had recently had puppies, and it's time for this
mama to become someone's baby again. Laney's a little nervous but likes
attention from people. She wants a home that's quiet but also active. And she
likes to chase tennis balls but fetching them is another story. Laney is full of
contradictions (and cuteness). Bipolar disorder may seem like it's a
contradiction, too, because of its high-energy highs and depressing lows — but
those highs and lows can be managed, and people with bipolar disorder can fetch
whatever goals, dreams, and passions they have. A bit like Laney.
