VIDEO: A PLACE WHERE WE BELONG VIDEO: A PLACE WHERE WE BELONG Print In 2013, Dr. Ana Patricia Alcasabas began working in the Cancer Institute of the Philippine General Hospital. What she saw was a sterile ward. Children were already afraid because they had been diagnosed with cancer, but coming into the ward, they were faced with beige waiting rooms and harsh lighting in cold clinics. This was not a place where they belonged. They reached out to Walt Disney-Philippines, and in 2019, unveiled a new design for the clinic based on the Star Wars Create Courage Campaign. Not only did PGH Pediatric Clinic get a new, colorful space in which to get well (as seen below), they also secured cutting-edge medical equipment through the program. You might know that Frank Oz, who gave voice to many beloved muppets, was the voice actor for Yoda. What you might not know is that Yoda was never supposed to be a puppet at all. The original plan was for him to be played by a capuchin monkey! Create Belonging in Your Communities At its core, Star Wars is a story about belonging. From some of the opening moments, as the twin suns set on Tatooine, we see that Luke Skywalker is looking at the place where he fits in. Whether we’re at work or home in our communities, we can help those around us to feel as if they’re part of something greater. Fan groups like 501st Vader’s Legion and Rebel Legions are certainly doing their part. It might feel silly to spend your evenings carefully crafting a Stormtrooper costume, or finding a period-appropriate belt to accentuate a Jedi robe, but the volunteers in these legions are doing just that. They appear and perform at local charity drives, fundraisers, and children’s hospitals to bring people together and give them a place to feel at home. They offer hope, inspiration, and a little whimsy to people who might need it. Watch: These fan groups aren’t the only ones helping others fit in, either. In this video from the PGH Pediatric Clinic, the cultural phenomenon of Star Wars and the generosity it brings about in others, helps a young child feel like he belongs. Need help with this video?
