Submit Apply Beginning August 1 DETERMINING THE RIGHT SMART OPPORTUNITY The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), is a unique education and workforce development opportunity for aspiring leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The SMART Scholarship Program offers two scholarship opportunities, the SMART Scholarship and the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship (Dellums SMART Scholarship). The SMART Scholarship is for students currently enrolled at a college or university or with previous college credit. Applicants should already possess a college transcript from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or will have a college transcript by the end of the fall term. The SMART Scholarship is also open to those pursuing or who will be pursuing a graduate degree at a regionally accredited U.S. institution. The Dellums SMART Scholarship is for students with no previous college credit who intend to pursue a bachelor's degree. Students seeking to attend a historically Black college or university, minority institution, or minority serving institution are particularly encouraged to apply. Recipients of either scholarship receive full tuition, annual stipends, health and book allowances, mentorship, and conduct internships at a DoD facility. The first step to a rewarding civilian career with the DoD is reviewing the eligibility requirements for both opportunities, starting with the 24 SMART STEM disciplines. These disciplines are general disciplines – specific majors or fields of study may fall under one or more discipline on this list. All applicants should be pursuing a degree in one of SMART’s 24 STEM disciplines. * Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering * Biomedical Engineering * Biosciences * Chemical Engineering * Chemistry * Civil Engineering * Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences * Computer Science and Engineering * Cybersecurity * Data Science and Analytics * Electrical Engineering * Environmental Sciences * Geosciences * Industrial and Systems Engineering * Information Sciences * Materials Science and Engineering * Mathematics * Mechanical Engineering * Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering * Nuclear Engineering * Oceanography * Operations Research * Physics * Software Engineering Please note, non-technical degrees, including management, arts, or humanities, are not approved or funded by SMART. FREQUENTLY ASKED ELIGIBILITY QUESTIONS Understanding eligibility criteria is a crucial first step in your SMART application. To help make this process straightforward, below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. ARE THERE ADDITIONAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS? Awarded scholars must be able to obtain, and maintain, a DoD security clearance. Security clearances are initiated by a scholar's Sponsoring Facility after award. Additionally, scholars awarded more than one year of degree funding must complete summer internships at their Sponsoring Facility. However, scholars with one-year awards begin working for their Sponsoring Facility upon graduation. ARE THERE ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS? SMART Scholarship applicants must either be attending a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or have college credit from one. Dellums SMART Scholarship applicants should be planning to attend a regionally accredited U.S. college or university. Furthermore, if your degree is not specifically listed among the 24 SMART STEM disciplines but falls under one of the broader categories, you are still eligible to apply. For example, a statistics major would fall under the SMART STEM mathematics discipline. ARE MILITARY MEMBERS ELIGIBLE? Active-duty military members who wish to apply must be separated or on terminal leave on or before August 1, 2025. Reserve and National Guard members are eligible to apply. Current Reserve Officers' Training Corps participants with a future service commitment are not eligible to apply. HOW DO I KNOW WHICH SCHOLARSHIP I SHOULD APPLY FOR? The system will ask eligibility questions at the start of an application and inform applicants which scholarship they are eligible for. Applicants who can produce a college transcript are not eligible for the Dellums SMART Scholarship and should consider applying to the SMART Scholarship Program. AP credit is not considered a college transcript. IS THERE A CAP ON TUITION OR HOW MUCH FUNDING I CAN RECEIVE THROUGH SMART? SMART does not have monetary limits on tuition, but awardees cannot exceed five years of funding. CLEARANCE PROCESS FAQ CONTACT US A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER SMART Scholarship awardees receive full-tuition coverage in exchange for a commitment to work as a DoD civilian. Awardees commit to one year of DoD civilian employment at their Sponsoring Facility for every year of SMART-sponsored degree funding. For this reason, reviewing Sponsoring Facility information is paramount. It ensures alignment with the Sponsoring Facility's objectives and can help determine if your major falls under one of the 24 STEM disciplines. SPONSORING FACILITY HEAR WHAT SMART SCHOLARS ARE SAYING Juliet Swinea, Ph.D. PhD, Civil Engineering “I have been put in the right rooms at the right times, and have been encouraged to present, take initiative, and engage with industry, academic, and government partners on behalf of the DoD.” Zaire Wade MS, Computer Science and Engineering “SMART has broadened my global perspective of understanding that everything is interconnected, and I believe that the DoD really speaks to that purpose and that mission and understanding that your education can help individuals all over the world. DoD and SMART have really best positioned me to contribute to that mission.” Megan Marsolek MS, Geosciences “If you’re considering applying for SMART, I would say just do it. I myself didn’t expect to get it. I was even on the borderline of not applying, just because I wasn’t sure what the chances are. But my sister told me, if you don’t apply, you’ll never know. You won’t even have a chance.” Fernando Morales BS, Chemical Engineering “The SMART Program has given me a strong foundation both at work and in my personal life. The scholarship benefits have allowed me to focus on being effective in my studies and work. The SMART Program has provided opportunities that have allowed me to accelerate my career through greater networking within the DoD.” SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program Phone: (571) 633-7940 Email: smart@smartscholarship.org Office Hours: Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time Our office is closed on all U.S. federal holidays.
