CHARITY CAMPAIGNING IS CRITICAL AMIDST GOVERNMENT CHAOS

BY HARRIET WHITEHEAD, CIVIL SOCIETY

In these shambolic times it seems only right that those working with the
communities most impacted by the cost-of-living crisis, and Westminster
instability, should be able to stand up and speak. Though charitable
organisations are often reminded not to be party-political, of course
anti-poverty charities want to see benefits uprated in line with inflation,
while environmental charities want our rivers clear of sewage – it would be
wrong to suggest they stay quiet on these issues.

4 TIPS & TRICKS TO STAY AHEAD OF THE CURVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

BY BEN ROBERTS, NFPRESEARCH

In the charity sphere the main concern has been the potential rise of fake
accounts posing as legitimate organisations, as well as the need to cough up the
monthly fee. Many users have been considering jumping ship from Twitter as a
result, and several alternative social media sites have been vying to become the
new platform of choice for the sector.

In the wake of this potential upset to the established social media hierarchy,
we’ve decided to share some of our best tips and practices for futureproofing
your online presence, and maximising your online engagement – particularly if we
might all be starting from scratch on a new site soon.

Can the sector still enact change?

By Ben Roberts, nfp Synergy

Following criticisms of the charity sector which claim that it has lost its
ability to bring about real policy and social change, we look at the context in
which these comments have been made and ask how we as a sector can overcome the
barriers that prevent effective campaigning.

‘CHARITIES HAVE NEVER JUST STUCK TO THEIR KNITTING’

By Sam Wait, Civil Society

Associate director of Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Helen Barnard, explains how
charities can effectively engage with the state to create real social change.

“It’s part of a charity’s mission to bring about social change and it always has
been. Charities have never just stuck to their knitting, they’ve also talked
about why people need more jumpers.”

PODCAST: CHARITY CAMPAIGNING IN TIMES OF POLITICAL UNCERTAINTY

From ThirdSector

ThirdSector talks to Sue Tibballs, chief executive of the Sheila McKechnie
Foundation, about attitudes towards campaigning by charities in the current
political climate. This follows the recent release of the Charity Commission's
"Politcal Activity & Campaigning by Charties" guide, the timing of which she
questions in the context of a backlash to recent campaigns.

THE PROUD HISTORY OF CHARITABLE CAMPAIGNING

By Andrew Purkiss

Jonathan Dearth, Director writes: "This is a brilliant article that sums up how
we got to where we are today in terms of charity campaigning. I'd recommend all
campaigners to read it, to understand whose shoulders that they are standing on.
I will be plagiarising...rather, making references to this article for years
ahead.

The Good News: We Can Engage in Political Activity section describes the decade
around the turn of the century when the charity law was clarified and
liberalised which led to mainstream charities starting to campaign. This led to
the formation of The Right Ethos, the SMK Foundation and the now defunct NCVO’s
Campaigning Effectiveness Unit around 2006.

Andrew Purkis wrote this as an address to the recent DSC event. Andrew was the
Chief Executive of Council for the Protection of Rural England and is has been a
long term board member of ActionAid.

Please read it and reference it to explain to colleagues and trustees why it’s
not only fine to campaign, it’s essential.”

Head of a leading Scottish charity sacked for wanting to stand for election to
Westminster.

by Kathleen Nutt, The Herald

THE head of a leading charity was sacked from a senior role by email after she
told her former boss she wanted to stand for election to Westminster.

Polly Jones, picured above, has broken her silence to reveal her long legal
battle after being dismissed from her £50,000 post as head of membership and
policy at the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA).

Ms Jones decided to speak out publicly in a bid to highlight workplace barriers
which can face people who hope to become MPs or MSPs and underline a key ruling
by the tribunal that 'participation in democracy' is a right under equality
legislation.

Charity Commission rejects concerns that it has changed campaigning rules

By Rob Preston and Sam Wait, Civil Society

Campaigning guidance for charities has not changed, the regulator has said,
after some in the sector expressed concern over new advice it has issued. One
sector lawyer said the Charity Commission’s five-minute guide, published
yesterday, “appears to be sowing the seeds of confusion by providing
contradictory advice” to the longstanding guidance on which it is based.

Meanwhile, charities and umbrella bodies have reaffirmed their right to engage
in political activity following the guide's publication and Commission chair
Orlando Fraser's speech yesterday.

Dealing with news that shakes the world

By Helen Deakin, CharityComms

When a major event or tragedy happens, and dominates the news, charity
communicators have an important role to swiftly steer and articulate our
organisation’s response.

We know that we need to act quickly so that our charity can make a positive
contribution. We know that a wrong-footed response could impact our reputation.
We know that our staff and supporters need to feel informed and valued in tough
and uncertain times.

How to get the most out of TikTok

If you’re a brand wanting to reach as many fans as possible, TikTok should be a
healthy part of your social media strategy. There are a variety of account
levels you can create; however you’ll need a public, business account if you
want anyone to interact fully with your content; and it goes without saying your
moderation team will require specific training in order to understand how to
monitor your content.

Why is people-led storytelling now more important than ever?

By Clare Keily/BOND

Nobody likes someone else speaking on their behalf and putting words in their
mouth. However, this is exactly what happens every time we talk about community
needs and experiences. Why do "professionals" feel they are better placed to
tell someone else's story than they are themselves? And why do we so often tell
these stories seeking pity rather than justice?

Charities using their social media voice to address big social issues

By Christine Fleming, Charitycomms

As a society we are facing a wide range of challenges right now. Challenges that
include everything from the cost of living and energy crises to health and
housing emergencies, and the refugee crisis, all while dealing with the
aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. For charities this means there is an
opportunity to use their voice across all their platforms in a way that helps
people make sense of the big issues they are facing and push for change at the
same time.

Here are just a few great examples of charities using their social media voice
to lead the charge and push for change:

HOW TO LAND MEDIA COVERAGE:

A GUIDE FOR SMALL NGOS

By Juliet Conway, BOND

Landing media coverage for your organisation can help expand your influence,
raise awareness of your work with the public and donors, highlight success or
pressing issues and campaign for change.

It can also be hard to get. Whether you’re trying to amplify your voice via
national, local or sector press, smaller organisations face the additional
challenge of having fewer resources – such as time and staff – to implement a
proper media strategy. So, here are a few tips to help you along the way.

FAIRER RECRUITMENT - THE “ROONEY RULE” WITHIN THE RIGHT ETHOS

BY JONATHAN DEARTH, DIRECTOR

In response to the Black Lives Matters words:

“Stand with us when words are not enough”

– The Right Ethos has introduced a policy of affirmative action to increase the
opportunities for BAME candidates and to support the charity sector to fulfil
their desire to reflect society more accurately.

The "Rooney Rule" is a policy that was introduced in the USA which requires
American Football league teams to interview BAME candidates for head coaching
and senior football operation jobs.

The Right Ethos is now to applying it to all the candidate shortlists that we
present our clients.

#CHARITYSOWHITE HELPING SUPPORT OUR FREE CAREER COACHING FOR YOUNG WORKING CLASS
PEOPLE

We are grateful for Charity So White in helping promote this scheme.

Our Director started this scheme in January 2020 as he came from a working class
background – initially living on the Bettws council estate in Newport and
receiving free school dinners during the steelworkers strike in 1980. It is for
any working-class people, not only those from a BAME background. However,
disproportionally black and ethnic minority people are working class and this
has been reflected in the young people who we have given free coaching to so
far, the majority of them are black or from an ethnic minority.

The Right Ethos is offering 26 free Career Coaching sessions for working class
individuals right at the start of their career – under 26 and who have never had
paid work in the sector. Recently, we gave a free session to Natasha Mpofu from
Manchester (pictured above) who said:

"I would like to say I truly appreciate the opportunity to gain free coaching
from yourself, as coming from a working class background, I don’t have a lot of
people to seek career advice to so this experience was invaluable. I will make
sure to implement all of the recommendations we spoke about today.”

Our Career Coach aims to help people understand their transferable skills,
