MOST F1 TEAMS HAVE YOUNG DRIVER PROGRAMMES TO DEVELOP NEW TALENT: WHO ARE THEY AND WHERE DO THEY RACE? Marcus Simmons Jul 21, 2023, 2:12 AM Upd: Jun 26, 2024, 11:39 AM Copy link Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Share on Linkedin Share on Pinterest Share on Viber 0 There are 20 drivers on the current Formula 1 grid, and some of them have been at the top of motor racing for a very long time. Some drivers even return to the cockpit of F1 machinery after time away because they’re seen as a better option than giving a newcomer an opportunity. But that’s not to say that teams aren’t scouting the next generation, as many have their own junior programme with some consisting of drivers who weren’t even born when Lewis Hamilton made his F1 debut, let alone Fernando Alonso! Some of these ‘academies’ are more extensive in their training and budgetary support and more effective than others, but at least it shows that the F1 elite are keeping the door ajar for those who are good enough – and helping them on their way. So who are the crop of youngsters under the wings of the F1 teams, and where are they racing? Ayumu Iwasa, VCARB 01 Photo by: Sam Bloxham / Motorsport Images RED BULL & RB CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * Ayumu Iwasa - Super Formula * Isack Hadjar - Formula 2 * Pepe Marti - Formula 2 * Arvid Lindblad - Formula 3 * Tim Tramnitz - Formula 3 * Oliver Goethe - Formula 3 * Enzo Deligny - Formula Regional European Championship * Enzo Tarnvanichkul - Formula 4 * James Egozi - Formula 4 The Red Bull Junior Team is the most famous of them all. Under the stewardship of the notoriously difficult-to-impress Helmut Marko, it’s been in existence for over 20 years now, and has produced world champions Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen plus grand prix race winners Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly. Alex Albon and Yuki Tsunoda are other graduates on the 2024 F1 grid, while further alumni include Formula E champions Jean-Eric Vergne and Sebastien Buemi, World Endurance and Le Mans conqueror Brendon Hartley, plus Daniil Kvyat and Liam Lawson. The junior programme currently has nine drivers with Super Formula's Ayumu Iwasa being the most experienced. He was already a Honda protege when he was picked up by the scheme in 2021 and Iwasa has since contested an F3 campaign, plus two seasons in F2 which included finishing fourth in the 2023 championship. Iwasa is now back in his home country of Japan competing for Team Mugen in SF, while the Red Bull junior also drove an FP1 session for RB at Suzuka in 2024. Iwasa was one of six Red Bull juniors on the F2 grid in 2023, but many have since left the programme leaving just two of its drivers competing for the 2024 crown. Isack Hadjar is one of them, who has already tasted F1 machinery having driven for Red Bull in FP1 at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and for AlphaTauri - now named RB - in FP1 at that year's Mexico GP. Although those drives came alongside a disappointing rookie season where he finished 14th in the F2 championship, his sophomore campaign is going much stronger with victories in Melbourne and Imola. The second Red Bull junior in F2 is Pepe Marti, who joined the programme in August 2023 having previously been one of Alonso's proteges. The Spaniard is competing in his rookie F2 campaign, having contested F3 for two years which included finishing fifth in the 2023 standings with three victories. Red Bull now has three of its junior drivers in F3 with Arvid Lindblad and Tim Tramnitz both being rookies of the series, while Oliver Goethe is in his second, full campaign. Elsewhere, Enzo Deligny is contesting his rookie season in the Formula Regional European Championship after finishing fourth in the 2023 Spanish F4 standings, which was his first year in the Red Bull programme. But Red Bull's presence in that championship continues, as both James Egozi and Enzo Tarnvanichkul are both contesting the 2024 Spanish F4 championship with the latter being the latest Thai driver to be part of the programme after Albon. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Prema Racing Photo by: Shameem Fahath MERCEDES CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * Frederik Vesti - European Le Mans Series * Andrea Kimi Antonelli - Formula 2 * Alex Powell - Italian F4 Championship * Yuanpu Cui - F4 British Championship * Doriane Pin - F1 Academy * Kenzo Craigie - Karting * Luna Fluxa - Karting In contrast to the Red Bull equivalent, the Mercedes Junior Programme is far more selective. In keeping with its prime guiding hand Gwenael Lagrue, the Frenchman who formerly ran the Lotus Junior/Gravity talent scheme, it is far more subtle and its proteges bear little overt branding from the Three-Pointed Star on their car liveries. But the programme still has various success stories with two of its alumni, George Russell and Esteban Ocon, both being grand prix winners. Ocon was discovered by Lagrue when he was in charge of the Gravity scheme, and he and Russell were among the first drivers he snapped up when he joined Mercedes, the duo joining the encumbent Pascal Wehrlein who is now in Formula E after two seasons in F1. Ocon, of course, beat Verstappen to the 2014 European F3 title with Italian junior single-seater giant Prema, so it’s little surprise that many Mercedes juniors compete in cars that are all with the squad. Frederik Vesti, for example, finished second in the 2023 F2 standings with Prema and his spot at the team was given to Andrea Kimi Antonelli for 2024, as the Dane moved to the European Le Mans Series while serving as reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 outfit. Antonelli is arguably the biggest talent to come through the Mercedes programme, as the Italian has won four single-seater championships. This resulted in the teenager skipping F3 to compete in F2, amid talk of him becoming Russell's team-mate in the 2025 F1 championship as Hamilton is leaving the Silver Arrows for Ferrari. Mercedes also has Alex Powell and Yuanpu Cui competing in separate F4 championships, while kart racers Kenzo Craigie and Luna Fluxa are part of the junior team as well. This year also saw the Silver Arrows sign Doriane Pin to its programme, who is currently competing in F1 Academy alongside sportscar duties in IMSA and the World Endurance Championship. Oliver Bearman, Prema Racing, 1st position Photo by: Sam Bloxham / Motorsport Images FERRARI CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * Oliver Bearman - Formula 2 * Dino Beganovic - Formula 3 * Rafael Camara - Formula Regional European Championship * Tuukka Taponen - Formula Regional European Championship * Aurelia Nobels - F1 Academy * Maya Weug - F1 Academy The Ferrari Driver Academy was previously quite top-heavy, but Mick Schumacher has since gone his own way with Mercedes, Antonio Giovinazzi is now a Le Mans 24 Hours winner with the Prancing Horse, Robert Shwartzman and Callum Ilott are also in WEC, while the latter previously did IndyCar which is the series Marcus Armstrong competes in. Among their predecessors in the FDA are Charles Leclerc and the late Jules Bianchi, as well as Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll and Zhou Guanyu. Essex talent Ollie Bearman only joined the Maranello junior programme for 2022 following a double-title-winning season in F4, and very nearly claimed the F3 crown at the first attempt with Prema. This hastened his graduation to F2 at the tender age of 17, with whom he finished sixth in his rookie season. Bearman is also the only current Ferrari junior to have started a grand prix for the Scuderia, as he replaced Carlos Sainz at the 2024 Saudi Arabian GP after the Spaniard was diagnosed with appendicitis. Bearman impressed by finishing seventh and he is now being lined up for an F1 seat somewhere in 2025. Down one step in F3, Dino Beganovic had a positive rookie season finishing sixth in the standings and is now contesting his second campaign with Prema in the series this year. On the next level down, Rafael Camara had a race-winning rookie campaign for Prema in FRegional and he is competing in the series again this year. He is joined in the championship by fellow Ferrari protege Tuukka Taponen, who has already impressed in his rookie season as he scored a double victory in Hungary. Ferrari also has a strong presence in the all-female F1 Academy, as it is supporting Aurelia Nobels and Maya Weug with the latter claiming a double podium in the Saudi Arabia season opener. Victor Martins, ART Grand Prix Photo by: Formula Motorsport Ltd ALPINE CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * Jack Doohan - No race programme * Victor Martins - Formula 2 * Gabriele Mini - Formula 3 * Nikola Tsolov - Formula 3 * Sophia Floersch - Formula 3 * Matheus Ferreira - Italian F4 * Abbi Pulling - F1 Academy * Kean Nakamura - Karting The lifespan of the Alpine Academy pretty much spans that of the Red Bull Junior Team – it’s just that it’s gone through numerous changes of identity, as well as a hiatus in the early 2010s, to reflect the parent Enstone-based F1 team. In its initial form, the drivers were competing in Renault’s single-seater championships or with the F3 teams to which the manufacturer supplied engines – those talents included Robert Kubica, Heikki Kovalainen and Jose Maria Lopez. Romain Grosjean was another to enjoy patronage as a Renault junior. After Renault returned to F1, youngsters on its books included Oliver Rowland, Jack Aitken and the late Anthoine Hubert. There are also two graduates of the programme on the current F1 grid with Zhou Guanyu now racing for Sauber, while Oscar Piastri controversially broke away from Alpine to replace Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren. There is now an opportunity for the programme to have its third graduate on the F1 grid next year, as Ocon is set to leave Alpine at the end of 2024. This could potentially open the door for Alpine reserve driver Jack Doohan, who finished third in the 2023 F2 standings. Alongside him on the F2 grid was fellow Alpine protege Victor Martins, who actually split from the scheme in 2020. Since his return, however, Martins has proven to be an exciting talent by winning the 2022 F3 championship before finishing fifth in his rookie F2 campaign which included taking victory in the Silverstone feature race. The Frenchman is contesting his second F2 campaign in 2024. Three drivers carry Alpine colours in F3. Most prominent among them is Sicilian Gabriele Mini, who ran Ferrari-backed Dino Beganovic close for the FRegional title in 2022. Bulgarian Nikola Tsolov won the 2022 Spanish F4 championship and is with ART, while German Sophia Floersch competes for PHM Racing by Charouz. At F4 level, Alpine has Brazilian Matheus Ferreira in the Italian series while Abbi Pulling is in British F4 alongside a campaign in F1 Academy where she leads the championship. Honour is upheld in karting by Japan’s Kean Nakamura. Franco Colapinto (ARG, MP Motorsport) Photo by: Lionel Ng / Motorsport Images WILLIAMS CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * Franco Colapinto - Formula 2 * Zak O'Sullivan - Formula 2 * Luke Browning - Formula 3 * Alessandro Giusti - Formula Regional European Championship * Jamie Chadwick - Indy NXT * Lia Block - F1 Academy * Oleksandr Bondarev - karting * Sara Matsui - karting The Williams Driver Academy is a relatively recent entity, although the team historically took young talent under its wing and gave them F1 testing programmes before hoisting them into the F1 squad – Damon Hill, David Coulthard and Valtteri Bottas are three examples. So, effectively, Williams had an F1 junior team in all but name. Since it was formalised, the Williams young-driver stable has featured Nicholas Latifi, Aitken and Red Bull refugee Dan Ticktum and the current crop will no doubt be hoping to surpass their predecessors. Two of them were promoted to F2 for 2024 after a positive F3 campaign where Zak O'Sullivan finished second last year, while Franco Colapinto was two positions below. Luke Browning, who like O’Sullivan is a winner of the Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award, has shown sharp pace during his progression up the single-seater ladder as he claimed the GB3 crown in 2022. He is now contesting his second F3 campaign, while last year Browning also won the Macau GP. Williams also has three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick on its books, who moved to Indy NXT for 2023 before claiming her maiden victory in the series this year. It is also supporting another highly-rated female talent, as Williams is backing Lia Block in the 2024 F1 Academy season with the American having experience in single-seaters and rallying. Alessandro Giusti is flying the Williams flag in FRegional, as are Oleksandr Bondarev and Sara Matsui in karting. Pato O'Ward, Arrow McLaren Chevrolet Photo by: Phillip Abbott / Motorsport Images MCLAREN CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * Pato O'Ward - IndyCar * Ryo Hirakawa - World Endurance Championship * Gabriel Bortoleto - Formula 2 * Alex Dunne - Formula 3 * Martinius Stenshorne - Formula 3 * Ugo Ugochukwu - Formula Regional European * Bianca Bustamante - F1 Academy As you can see, in some ways the McLaren Driver Development Programme works differently to the rest of the F1 junior teams. Its most experienced driver is Pato O’Ward, an IndyCar race winner who is contesting his fifth, full season in the American series. He has also driven McLaren F1 machinery having competed in FP1 for the 2022 and 2023 Abu Dhabi GPs. At one stage, two-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou was also on the McLaren programme but that relationship broke down after he lost trust in the team's ability to find him a spot in F1. Nevertheless, O'Ward is part of a growing McLaren Driver Development Programme which has produced the likes of F1 world champion Hamilton and grand prix winner Lando Norris. Ryo Hirakawa joined the programme in September 2023, a year where he clinched his second, consecutive WEC title for Toyota. The programme also includes F2's Gabriel Bortoleto, who joined in 2023 as well during his F3 championship-winning campaign. There are two drivers currently flying the McLaren flag in F3, as both Martinius Stenshorne and Alex Dunne joined the programme at the beginning of the year. There is also Ugo Ugochukwu, who joined the McLaren stable as a 13-year-old karter before embarking on a successful start to his single-seater career which included winning the 2023 Euro 4 Championship. The American is now competing in FRegional, while McLaren is also supporting Bianca Bustamante in F1 Academy. Zane Maloney, Rodin Motorspor Photo by: Formula Motorsport Ltd SAUBER CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * Theo Pourchaire – No race programme * Zane Maloney - Formula 2 * Lena Buhler - Formula Regional European Championship * Carrie Schreiner - F1 Academy * Taym Saleh - Karting Sauber has a long history of awarding exciting, young talent their debut in F1 as 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Leclerc all started out with the Swiss team. The real find here is Theo Pourchaire. The Frenchman has been on the books since his F4 days and is now reserve driver for the F1 team after clinching the F2 title in 2023 with ART Grand Prix. While that victory was unable to land him a spot in F1 full-time, Pourchaire did move to SF but his time there only lasted one race as he was subsequently signed by IndyCar's Arrow McLaren - but that stint lasted for just one month as he was replaced by Nolan Siegel. Its next big talent is F2's Zane Maloney, who joined the Sauber Academy in January 2024. That came after finishing runner-up in the 2022 F3 championship, before coming 10th in his rookie F2 season the following year. Things have improved in his sophomore year though, as his first weekend as a Sauber junior entailed claiming a double victory at the F2 season opener in Bahrain - Maloney's first two wins in the series. Beyond that, the Sauber Academy has slimmed down somewhat over the past couple of years with only three other drivers part of the programme. Lena Buhler is racing in FRegional, Carrie Schreiner is in F1 Academy and Sauber has Taym Saleh in karting. Pietro Fittipaldi, reserve driver, Haas F1 Photo by: Andy Hone / Motorsport Images HAAS CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * No junior drivers Haas has no official young driver programme, although it has looked after youngsters such as Pietro Fittipaldi, Louis Deletraz and Santino Ferrucci in the past and is supporting Chloe Chambers in F1 Academy. Felipe Drugovich, Aston Martin AMR23 Photo by: Zak Mauger / Motorsport Images ASTON MARTIN CURRENT YOUNG DRIVERS * Felipe Drugovich - European Le Mans Series * Jak Crawford - Formula 2 The AMF1 Driver Development Programme was new for 2023, and Felipe Drugovich became its first member. It was something of an anomaly that the Brazilian wasn’t affiliated to an F1 team as he crushed opposition – including a galaxy of F1 juniors – on his way to the 2022 F2 title. While Drugovich was unable to find a race programme for 2023, he did notch up testing mileage with Aston Martin in F1 and has also been extremely rapid in Formula E outings with Maserati. He finally found a race programme for 2024 though, as he is competing for Vector Sport in the LMP2 category of ELMS. Jak Crawford became Aston Martin's next young driver, as the F2 driver joined the programme at the beginning of 2024 after cutting ties with Red Bull. The American is now in his second season of F2 after finishing 13th in his rookie year, which included a victory at the Red Bull Ring. Although not officially part of the young driver programme, Aston Martin is also supporting F1 Academy's Tina Hausmann.
