An automated external defibrillator (AED) is an automated machine that, when appropriately attached to a victim’s chest, “reads / analyzes” a person’s heart rhythm to determine if that rhythm is of a form that may respond to an electrical shock. If the AED senses the appropriate abnormal heart rhythm, the AED informs the user to deliver an electric shock to the victim. This electrical shock can convert an abnormal heart rhythm to a normal heart rhythm. An AED is intended to be applied on a victim that is unresponsive, not breathing or with no signs of circulation. To use an automated external defibrillator as part of the KSC Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) Program, your AED should be located in a centralized location and be supported by certified CPR / AED trained individuals ready to respond should the need arise.
