We've just started using Ello with our 6 year old. It appears to catch reading &
pronunciation errors and helps our child to correct. It does state in the app
that it will not correct every single error, instead opting to help the child
little by little. That sounds like a good plan to me, and when I listen to
reading sessions, I think our child is being challenged appropriately, and
corrected appropriately. We will continue using Ello!

We been very lucky that we had found an awesome software such as Ello to help
our son in his reading journey. After being out of the country for almost two
years his reading, and English in general, was a bit rusty. We struggled to find
a way for him to hold a book and start reading. We found Ello online and we were
amazed how fast he got engaged with the app and how excited he gets each time
new books arrive with his little present. He keeps counting how many points he
has so far which makes him feel rewarded. This app of a top notch quality, which
was a surprise for us especially for an educational app. Really smooth software
with great feel. The customer experience has been superb. Dr. Elizabeth and the
rest of the team are amazing. I had wrote them emails over the weekend expecting
a reply on the following Monday to be surprised with a reply within minutes. You
can tell the people behind this company are trying to build a great company
right from the start. One thing we would love is if the app would work on others
tablets besides the iPad. Currently the e-subscription only works on the iPad
and my son’s iPad is really old and has many technical issues that it makes
using the app on it very frustrating for him. We bought him a new Samsung tablet
awhile back but he can’t use Ello on it. Another thing we noticed about the app
is that once in a while it recognize a word as being pronounced correctly when
my son didn’t really pronounce it properly. It does not happen often but we
notice it sometimes. Thanks Dr. Elizabeth and team for this great app. I hope
this company really succeed.

The AI system listening to our kids is a game-changer. Really smart setup.
Obviously there are some bugs (prompts a little repetitive or computer mis-hears
a kid with speech issues etc). But lovely and our kids have been using it off
and on for two years and love it (I can't speak to its 'results' since our kids
are in a Spanish immersion school and therefore their English reading skills are
lagging anyway, but Elli feels like a great support for that gap)

Reading has always been a sore subject in our household with lots of tears and

There’s not a fight to read books and I can tell he’s gaining confidence. I also
loved reading more about the published articles by the developers and the fact
that this follows the Science of Reading makes me feel at ease. My only critique
is that the sound for the videos at the end of the books is really really quiet
and difficult to hear.

This program has been helping my daughter a great deal. She doesn’t love reading
on Ello, but she is learning much more. It’s not a perfect program, the videos
after she finishes books don’t play loud enough to hear and when she’s reading,
she often reads words wrong and it doesn’t pick up on it, (so I still have to
watch everything she reads), but it’s still a good program with good book
options. Makes reading easier.

I like the idea, but am not sure how happy I am with the digital version. We
were mailed books before (and love it), but switched to digital. My dyslexic
daughter can’t use the tools her tutors have taught her to follow along while
reading as they involve touching the word (if you touch the word it pulls up
Ello to help- which gets very frustrating for her). We also miss the classic
familar books that we use to get mailed us. I understand writing your own books,
but they are not quite the same- plus she can’t use them towards her AR goal at
school, so we are having to supplement other books on top of these. I see where
you are going, but think it still needs work.

I’ve tried at least half a dozen other reading apps and this is the only one my
7 year old doesn’t get frustrated with and want to quit. It’s been great to see
him read! My only question is when he mispronounces words or struggles with
words we were told the app remembers and uses that info. I don’t see how tho?
Was expecting words he struggles with to come up in books chosen for him. But
other than that it’s a great app and we are both loving it. Thank you!

How many children can I add to a subscription?

You can add up to 3 reader profiles.



What age range is Ello designed for?

Right now, Ello offers books on reading levels Kindergarten to 3rd grade. We are
adding more books all the time so if your child is beyond this or a pre-reader,
check back for more updates! Ello is not suited for pre-readers who are not yet
decoding basic words.


Generally, Ello works best for children 4–8 years of age but it depends on their
reading ability. If they can read the sentence “I am a cat,” they are ready for
our earliest level of books! 



How many books does my child get?

Ello with e-books will have 3 books per weekly lesson! We find this gives the
perfect amount of time for new readers to work through the books and build a
good understanding of concepts before moving on to new books. 

Ello with paperbacks gets 5 physical books shipped to your home.

How does the Ello app work?

Ello helps early readers break down learning barriers by combining artificial
intelligence and speech recognition technology to make Ello come to life. Ello
is a revolutionary state-of-the-art interactive reading buddy who listens to
your child read out loud. Ello provides support when your child needs help
reading, gentle corrections when they make errors, and motivation to keep your
child engaged. Appropriately leveled books will be automatically loaded into the
app for you!



How does my child use Ello?

Your child will simply log into the app and choose a book to start reading. If
they need help with a word, they can tap on the word for help from Ello.



How does Ello keep my child engaged?

As your child reads, Ello brings the story to life, provides words of
encouragement, and helps them if they get stuck so they don't get frustrated.

We use behavioral psychology and a growth mindset paradigm to keep your child
encouraged, help their confidence soar, and build a love of reading. 


Ello offers a reward system as well. In this system, children collect stars and
badges, leading up to a completion prize that is either delivered digitally,
included in the next box, or both!

My child is reading the words wrong but Ello isn’t correcting them. What’s going
on?

Since children can get easily discouraged, Ello leans on the lenient side. We
recommend sitting with your child when they read and helping with some of these
corrections yourself. 



Is Ello good for kids with dyslexia?

Ello’s instructional method was developed by reading specialists with
backgrounds in dyslexia intervention and uses direct, explicit, and sequential
phonics instruction. This is exactly what research shows works for helping
children with dyslexia learn how to read. Ello is not a comprehensive curriculum
or intervention model for dyslexia, it’s a great supplement and we have numerous
children with dyslexia using Ello with great success.

What literacy strategies do you use to support my child?

Ello uses proven, phonics-based reading strategies to help your child decode
words and develop fluency. 



What device is required for Ello?

The Ello app works on iPhones and iPads running iOS 14 and newer. For a complete

desktop computers.

What kind of books are in the app?

We offer books that are level-appropriate, inclusive, and engaging.



Where do your books come from?

Our physical books are mostly favorite classics. We get them from publishers and
you might even already own some of them.

Our e-books in the Ello app come from a special team of authors who specialize
in reading education. They are created with the science of reading in mind.

What types of physical books do you send?

Every box of books has to meet three criteria:

 1. Highly engaging
 2. Just the right level for your child’s reading ability
 3. Match common age-based interests
    ‍

We believe that fantastic books create enthusiastic readers and we work with
reading specialists to source classic beloved books and new undiscovered gems.
The best part is that we take the guesswork out of finding books that are "just
right" for your child – ones that are not too easy and not too hard.



How do you determine my child's reading level?

We make it easy! We’ll take you through a short series of questions in our
onboarding process. We use your answers to determine your child’s estimated
reading level and reach out if we have any questions. 


As your child completes each level, they will automatically progress to more
difficult books. If the books are ever too easy or hard, please let us know and
we can help change their reading level.‍



What does it mean that a book is ‘just right’ for my child? ‍

If a child is reading on the appropriate level, they should make 1-10 mistakes
per book. Any more than this and we find they get frustrated and overwhelmed.
Less mistakes and we find they get bored and aren’t engaged.

By answering a few short questions, we can help determine your child’s
appropriate developmental reading level. We are also happy to set the reading
level to whatever they are reading at school, as determined by their teacher.



The books are too hard or too easy. How do I change the reading level for my
child?

No problem! We want each child to have the best experience possible. This means
making sure they are reading on the right level for their abilities. Please
email or text Customer Support and we will be happy to make any adjustments you
may need. 



When I unlock new books, will we still be able to read the old ones?

Yes! The books will stay available in the app so you can enjoy them over and
over again.

What data do you collect?

If you choose to allow it, we process the audio of your child reading so that
Ello can provide real-time support and motivation, and so your child can access
certain features of the app, such as listening to themselves read. Separately,
you can opt-in to give us access to this data so that we can improve Ello.

We also collect data of your child's progress to provide the service (for
example the rewards).
‍

Finally, we collect anonymous and aggregated usage data. See our privacy policy

What do you do with the data you collect?

It is up to you on what data we collect - it is optional. You will be asked if
you would like to opt-in to data collection after downloading the app.

All data is anonymous and aggregated and used to improve the product.



Do you sell the data that you collect?

When does the box ship?

In most cases, your first Ello box will ship the business day after your order
or monthly renewal. Occasionally, we may have some questions about your child’s
reading level or your shipping address. If that is the case, we will reach out
by email. We will also send an email confirmation with a tracking link so you
can watch the shipment of your box. Once sent, you should receive your box
within 2-8 business days via USPS Media Mail.

Michael Auli is an industry scientist based in Menlo Park, California. His work
spans machine learning, speech, and NLP, and he helped create projects such as
wav2vec/data2vec, the widely used fairseq toolkit, the first modern feed-forward
seq2seq models outperforming RNNs for NLP, and several top-ranked submissions at
the WMT news translation task in 2018 and 2019. Before that, Michael was at
Microsoft Research, where he did early work on neural machine translation and
using neural language models for conversational applications. During his PhD at
the University of Edinburgh, he worked on natural language processing and
parsing.

My child age 9 loves the books. She's more independent in her reading and the

We've just started using Ello with our 6 year old. It appears to catch reading &
pronunciation errors and helps our child to correct. It does state in the app
that it will not correct every single error, instead opting to help the child
little by little. That sounds like a good plan to me, and when I listen to
reading sessions, I think our child is being challenged appropriately, and
corrected appropriately. We will continue using Ello!

Ello is the only reading app I’ve found that lets an emerging reader read out
loud and provides feedback/assistance immediately and via subsequent email. Just
struggling to keep my 6 year old grandson engaged and reading regularly without
making it a requirement/task.

Ello has been an amazing tool for my little reader. He has shown a huge

We been very lucky that we had found an awesome software such as Ello to help
our son in his reading journey. After being out of the country for almost two
years his reading, and English in general, was a bit rusty. We struggled to find
a way for him to hold a book and start reading. We found Ello online and we were
amazed how fast he got engaged with the app and how excited he gets each time
new books arrive with his little present. He keeps counting how many points he
has so far which makes him feel rewarded. This app of a top notch quality, which
was a surprise for us especially for an educational app. Really smooth software
with great feel. The customer experience has been superb. Dr. Elizabeth and the
rest of the team are amazing. I had wrote them emails over the weekend expecting
a reply on the following Monday to be surprised with a reply within minutes. You
can tell the people behind this company are trying to build a great company
right from the start. One thing we would love is if the app would work on others
tablets besides the iPad. Currently the e-subscription only works on the iPad
and my son’s iPad is really old and has many technical issues that it makes
using the app on it very frustrating for him. We bought him a new Samsung tablet
awhile back but he can’t use Ello on it. Another thing we noticed about the app
is that once in a while it recognize a word as being pronounced correctly when
my son didn’t really pronounce it properly. It does not happen often but we
notice it sometimes. Thanks Dr. Elizabeth and team for this great app. I hope
this company really succeed.

My child enjoys using Ello. Her favorite part is receiving help when needed at
her fingertips. She also really enjoys the rewards. I’d love to have better
tracking as a parent. For example- knowing how much time was committed to
reading each day would be helpful.

The AI system listening to our kids is a game-changer. Really smart setup.
Obviously there are some bugs (prompts a little repetitive or computer mis-hears
a kid with speech issues etc). But lovely and our kids have been using it off
and on for two years and love it (I can't speak to its 'results' since our kids
are in a Spanish immersion school and therefore their English reading skills are
lagging anyway, but Elli feels like a great support for that gap)

My daughter has been improving so much with Ello! I am so happy with her
progress within just a couple of weeks. The books are all things she is
interested and watching a video at the end of each book gives her an incentive

So far so good. I do wish there was like a parent portal, or ways for parents to
track their kids progress, see how many errors they’re making, words they
consistently struggle with etc. but overall it seems to be going good with both

Reading has always been a sore subject in our household with lots of tears and
frustration. This app has allowed my son to build confidence in his reading!
There’s not a fight to read books and I can tell he’s gaining confidence. I also
loved reading more about the published articles by the developers and the fact
that this follows the Science of Reading makes me feel at ease. My only critique
is that the sound for the videos at the end of the books is really really quiet
and difficult to hear.

This program has been helping my daughter a great deal. She doesn’t love reading
on Ello, but she is learning much more. It’s not a perfect program, the videos
after she finishes books don’t play loud enough to hear and when she’s reading,
she often reads words wrong and it doesn’t pick up on it, (so I still have to
watch everything she reads), but it’s still a good program with good book
options. Makes reading easier.

son read the first book but when he made a mistake, Ello continued reading and

I like the idea, but am not sure how happy I am with the digital version. We
were mailed books before (and love it), but switched to digital. My dyslexic
daughter can’t use the tools her tutors have taught her to follow along while
reading as they involve touching the word (if you touch the word it pulls up
Ello to help- which gets very frustrating for her). We also miss the classic
familar books that we use to get mailed us. I understand writing your own books,
but they are not quite the same- plus she can’t use them towards her AR goal at
school, so we are having to supplement other books on top of these. I see where
you are going, but think it still needs work.

I’ve tried at least half a dozen other reading apps and this is the only one my
7 year old doesn’t get frustrated with and want to quit. It’s been great to see
him read! My only question is when he mispronounces words or struggles with
words we were told the app remembers and uses that info. I don’t see how tho?
Was expecting words he struggles with to come up in books chosen for him. But
other than that it’s a great app and we are both loving it. Thank you!

My daughter has struggled with reading since entering school, but has always
loved being read to. She has gotten countless interventions at school and I've
tried all the major apps like ABC Mouse and Hooked on Phonics. This is the first

I would give the program itself a 5. My 5 year old loves reading with Ello even
more than library books. She’s excited every time she advanced to the next level
and gets a new set of books. I would give the app though a 2. It freezes A LOT
and we have to shut it down and restart it. It’s very frustrating.

It’s really quite good. The AI doesn’t always get my child’s voice but it’s
great overall. I do wish we could change what books he could read because the

The concept for the app is fantastic. The app itself works decent, but does have
