MY WRITING

 * i write a variety of genres, mostly fantasy. i like to blend genres.
   currently i have finished works in paranormal, urban fantasy, high fantasy,
   and fairytale retellings.
 * most of my stories explore complex relationships with gender and sexuality,
   marginalization/oppression, duty, familial and platonic relationships,
   nuanced morality, finding hope, and subverting expectations.

'Doylist' and 'Watsonian' are basically two different lenses to use when
analyzing a story. A Watsonian approach comes from within the story, exploring
and explaining it in the way a character would in-universe, hence the name
referencing John Watson. Doylist (as in Arthur Conan Doyle) is analysis from an
outside perspective, treating the story as a story written by someone and
focusing on more meta aspects.

If someone asks, "Why did [Character X] say [Y]," a Watsonian explanation would
focus on the in-universe factors: the character's backstory, motive,
personality, beliefs, and so on, all things that someone within the story could
perceive. A Doylist explanation might focus on thematic relevance and highlight
authorial intent; why did the author choose to write that?

Both forms of analysis are valuable, and ideally, a story should hold up to both
internal and external scrutiny, and those analyzing a story should recognize and
use both perspectives. The reason a Watsonian explanation can't be used to
counter a Doylist critique (per the original post) is that it fails to recognize
the core of the critique. A post about how strange it is that an author chose to
write something a certain way cannot be countered by providing the in-universe
explanation, because those are the exact choices the Doylist lens is
criticizing. In the same sense, you can't counter a Watsonian critique by
explaining authorial intent or some such. (Authorial intent is not authorial
success.)

hey all u long-form writers out there (novels, novellas, serialized fiction,
anything): how long are your chapters?

google tells me 2,500-5,000 words is normal, but every time i write a chapter it
ends up being around 3,000 and 5k just seems so INCREDIBLY long

how long are yours? pls tell me in replies for science

(RE)INTRODUCTION

my name is erin (he/they) and i'm a 23 year old neurodivergent and queer writer.
i decided it was time for a fresh start again and made a brand new blog.

i spend more time thinking about writing than actually committing to it since
i'm still suffering from burnout these days, so snippets will be shared quite
irregularly for the unforeseeable future. however, i'm not one to pass up
rambling about my wips, given the opportunity.

i'm both ask and tag game friendly, just know that i can be slow to respond to

MY WRITING

you may find a list of all my wips on this post; all my stories include queer
