In 2022, The University of Exeter announced a research partnership with Shell focused on carbon sequestration. This is a technology that is provably ineffective at reducing carbon emissions and is a distraction from the real solution - reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. This partnership is a betrayal of the university's message of sustainability and environmental responsibility. It is also a betrayal of the students and staff who have a right to expect their university to uphold its values. One cannot pretend to be eco-friendly while partnering with Shell, one of the most environmentally destructive companies in the world. FOSSIL FUEL COMPANIES DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CLIMATE AND THEY NEVER WILL Now is the time to demand that the university takes meaningful action to address the pressing issue of climate change. We must make it clear that we will not tolerate institutions that claim to be eco-friendly while partnering with those who are most responsible for environmental degradation. The future of our planet depends on it. Image: Aftermath of Shell oil spill. Hover over the image to learn more. Image: Eric Dooh near Goi, Nigeria, showing his hand covered in oil spilled into a nearby creek. Taken by Marten van Dijl/EPA EXCERPT FROM THE GUARDIAN: “We were eating, drinking, breathing the oil,” Dooh said. By 2010, six years after the initial leak, Goi was still too polluted to sustain its residents. The Nigerian government ordered them to abandon their homes and permanently evacuate Goi. By then, most of the villagers, including the Dooh family, had already moved away, scattered across nearby towns. Shell would later argue in court that locals brought the disaster upon themselves Article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2022/jun/01/oil-pollution-spill-nigeria-shell-lawsuit HERE'S THE THING: THE UNIVERSITY CANNOT PAINT ITSELF AS A LEADER AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE WHILST HAPPILY TAKING MONEY FROM FOSSIL FUEL COMPANIES. THAT IS AN INHERENT CONFLICT OF INTEREST, AND WE HOPE TO PUT A STOP TO IT.
