Explore All Events A Cincinnati Mexican restaurant has closed after 25 years, and its adjoining craft beer bar is also just days away from calling it quits. Habanero on Ludlow, located at 358 Ludlow Ave. in Clifton, held its final night of service Saturday, Dec. 21. It was known for its Latin fare, including tacos, tortas, burritos and build-your-own bowls. Signature dishes included the Mad Max, quick-fried tilapia, pinto beans, Mexican rice, Jack/cheddar cheese, shredded cabbage and habanero white sauce; the Chuba Cabre, served with cinnamon sweet potatoes, pinto beans, Mexican rice, apple/poblano salsa and lettuce; and the Arroyo Hondo, marinated grilled steak, caramelized onions, goat cheese, black beans, Mexican rice, lettuce and roasted smoky tomato chipotle salsa. The restaurant was owned by Max Monks. He also owns the Taproom on Ludlow, which opened in 2022 in the same building as Habanero, and Mad Monks Pizza, which was located inside 16 Lots Brewing Co. in Mason. 16 Lots permanently closed last month. expand Max Monks is the owner of Taproom on Ludlow. Max Monks Monks posted a letter to the outside door of Habanero that reads in part, “I have made the incredibly difficult decision to not renew the lease for Habanero on Ludlow. Although the landlord made great efforts to keep Habanero a part of Clifton, I felt it was for the best to close this chapter of my life and move onwards with a new adventure.” He told me the past two decades have exceeded his wildest dreams. "I am so proud of everybody's effort on a 25-year run in a historically difficult industry," Monks said. The taproom's last day of service will be Dec. 28. Monks said it doesn't make much sense to keep it open without Habanero providing food. He's delaying the closure to honor a few private parties that were booked earlier in the year. He added that Gaslight Property, his landlord for Habanero and the Taproom on Ludlow, have been wonderful to work with. The closure had more to do with his lease being up rather than a decline in business, Monks said. He added that after being in the industry for 40 years, it's time for him to take a step back and only focus on building one brand instead of three. Monks will focus his energy on reopening and rebranding Mad Monks Pizza. His goal is to renew the concept in the former 16 Lots Brewing space in Mason, at 753 Reading Road, in early 2025. He's been working with Mason landlord Jeff Benson to facilitate the transition. An opening date for the new Mad Monks has not yet been set.
