Well, we did it!
10 people at my place for an intense weekend of being stuffed with the contents
of my brain.
The feedback is still coming in but my own personal biggest take-away? It's
clearly a 3, not a 2, day course. Or, a 2 day online teaching and 1 day live. Or
some variation of the above.
The subject is just so fascinating; getting to this point helped me answer so
many of my questions right off the bat about why people end up with Reproductive
Immunology issues, why people have long-COVID, and how to connect the lines
between (amongst other issues we discuss) Mast Cell issues, Lyme disease, mould
poisoning and fertility. And why inflammation is the tissue which holds
everything I teach you together.
Like the rest of my TCM training, this course is most suitable for those who
have some experience in practice already - enough experience that they've had
success and then hit a wall. Ideally this lecture is for those practitioners who
begin to winter what they don't know, what they're missing and don't write
understand why what they do works for some people but not others.
I'm refining and polishing this lecture now, but I'll be offering it live in
some form again. Likely the last time I offer it live however, before it gets

Sometimes, Masterminding with me isn't about me helping you make lots of money.

This Friday at 1pm UK time we'll be having our monthly MiniMastermind in The
Growth Partnership. This month, we're going to talk about how to break up with
our clients.
There are lots of different ways a client relationship can conclude:
🌿 Natural endings;
☹️ I feel uncomfortable endings;
🔥 I need to fire my client endings;
🕓 Things have gone on too long endings; and
🤦🏻♀️ I don’t think I’m doing much good here endings.
Why do I want to talk about this?
In the same way that when we're at college studying Chinese Medicine we're not
taught much (or sometimes anything) about running a successful business, we're
not taught much about patient management. This is one of the reasons why pretty
much every practitioner I ever talk to has at least one 'heart-sink' client; the
person they really don't want to treat for whatever reason, but just can't seem
to conclude the relationship.
Breaking up can be hard to do and ending things with a client requires
boundaries, guts, the ability to hold space for discomfort, and sometimes, a
willingness to not be liked by the other person. This is challenging for
practitioners for all sorts of reasons:
🤷🏻♀️ Maybe you come from a family where feelings aren’t a legitimate reason
for taking action.
🟰 Maybe you feel the need to be ‘non-judgemental’ and ‘reasonable’ and
‘logical’ and ‘fair’ but these lead you to a situation that is in direct
contrast to what you need.
😣 Maybe feeling this kind of discomfort causes you physical, existential or
emotional pain.
😳 Maybe you have trouble not being liked, or feeling like there is someone out
there who thinks you did them wrong.
🥶 Maybe you are afraid of what will happen if you draw a clear boundary with
your client.

I genuinely love running Masterminds.
I carefully put together groups and learn with each year that goes by and each
group that forms, what works and what doesn't.
And they last, these groups. Most of them stay in touch with their groups and in
their accountability partnerships years after the year with me has finished - to
me that's the mark of a good experience.
Another mark of a good experience is the feedback. We ask for it throughout the

Did you know that most of my online herbal medicine clients and precisely 1/4 of
my in-person clients are practitioners? It surprised me when I counted up this
morning - this situation kind of snuck up on me!
Do you know the predominant thought I think about practitioners when they come
to see me?
I think:
👉I've got you.👈
Because you all have your clients, but who has you in your life?
❓In whose hands can you put your health?
❓Who can you trust to strike the balance between looking after you and speaking
your language?
When I treat Practitioners:
💚 I get to know them.
🩷 I plan for them and with them.
🩵 I take them on a journey whose twists and turns and destination I know well.
🩶 I ensure I speak in their language so they understand exactly what I'm doing
without making them responsible for driving, managing or executing their care.
I hold them in a process that nobody knows better than me and I do so
personally.
And so I ask you: when was the last time you had a really good look at your
health?
Working with me looks like:
1️⃣ An initial consultation and a report setting out exactly what I think is
going on and what my plan for you is going to be.
2️⃣A free 15m follow-up for you to ask any and all questions you have that arise
from the consultation and report.
You can then take this report to a local practitioner I've trained to work with,
or,
3️⃣ I'm there to work with you, order tests for you, write referrals if needed
and co-ordinate your care if there's more than one other practitioner involved
in your health plan.
▶️ This might be weekly acupuncture.

Welcome to the last instalment of story week - number 5 in fact!
This post is all about the tension which exists in my life between spending time
in 'lala land' (the place where everything is possible and rosy), whilst
continuing to live in and experience the real world.
This probably seems a strange thing to talk about, but as I've worked on growing
my business and my practice, it's been a very important tightrope to walk.
For example:
✨I have used my imagination to create the kind of space I wanted my patients to
be in whilst I worked (the beautiful treatment room designed to give them an
experience, not just a treatment) all the while figuring out how to generate the
income I'd need to make it real.
✨I surround myself with input from the outside world in the form of people,
learning, experiences and ways I spend time and money which are positive and
inspiring. But at the same time I have also found ways to encounter news and
current affairs, and to lean about and engage with the hardships and trauma my
clients face in different ways.
✨I imagine myself a year in the future, think about the person I want to be and
how I've got there, all the whilst dealing with whatever cash-flow, staffing,
and personal issues which have arisen.
So many of the blocks which in the past would have had me
👉stumbling,
👉caused me to not be able to take action or
👉 seen me sabotaging my growth by repeating old patterns...
...Have been replaced with a few things I know for certain.
1️⃣ I need to invest, even when it's a financial or emotional stretch, in things
and people who will help me grow emotionally or financially. This always pays
off.
2️⃣ I must ask for and receive support, which is the difference for me between
action and inaction, growth and stagnation.
3️⃣ My blocks, when broken down, are like itty bitty steps which become like a
roadmap to my future.
4️⃣ I'm an organised person, so I've had to make peace with not being able to
fit into my week any more than I'm already doing. If I want to do something new,
I need to rearrange, hire or let something go.
5️⃣ I can't ask of others what I don't do myself.

It's story week. Here we are with episode 4.
In this post, I want to talk about struggle.
I chose this photo as this was taken at the end of a long period of time where I
wasn't lecturing - I just didn't feel for a long time that I had anything new to
contribute to the TCM and fertility conversation.
Overcoming this particular struggle, and realising that what I was doing in my
practice was - just like it was when I created the Diploma - new, different and
at the forefront of how fertility was being discussed. And that talking about
what I'd discovered in my practice was enough. It was liberating in so many ways
and at the time I also found it opened me up to looking at many things I'd
previously dismissed, as being possible again.
When I look at it, really, I think I mainly have four struggles which recur
again and again.
1️⃣ My brain is a self-sabotage master, and I have to use every tool I have to
stop it keeping me in a place it calls safe, and I call going backwards or at
the very least, standing still.
2️⃣ The more visible I become, the more people who have opinions about me and
what I say. And the more they like to share them with me without asking
permission first. As a result, resilience is a practice I have needed to
cultivate.
3️⃣ I struggle to hold my nerve each time I take a jump on my life - a change of
identity, a pivot, an investment - especially if it results in short-term cash
flow issues.
4️⃣ I struggle to find places I can be led. And when I find them, it's very
scary to invest in them as they inevitably take me just that little bit far out
of my comfort zone. For example, I'm right in the middle of a coaching
qualification and I feel like I'm starting right at the beginning again. It's
both liberating and very strange as it's been a long time since I wasn't the
leader in the room and learning to try things out and publicly getting them
wrong is not a comfortable thing.
At each stage of my life it's:
✨Amazing
✨Frustrating
✨Boring as hell...
...To find that I face the same challenges around:
👉trust,
👉confidence,
👉my brain's liking for quick wins, and
👉money and time scarcity issues, just wearing different clothes.

When I graduated, and for several years afterwards, I was very far from sure
that I'd be able to make a living doing this beloved job.
I couldn't even afford to rent a room in a shared apartment and had moved back
in with my parents which - while they were amazing - was really difficult.
The message was clear in my training - we serve. And the interpretation of serve
that was implied and often discussed was one where the client was served before,
and without regard for, our own needs.
Some, but not all of the things I heard:
👉 It's a calling,
👉 It's not about the money,
👉 We don't turn clients away,
👉 We're there to help when other medical people or experiences have failed.
And if we make a good living?
✨Which IMO includes savings, pension, life and health insurance, CPD, holidays,
treats, charitable contributions, paying bills and tax, hiring support to help
us and to grow out businesses...✨
It's associated with:
😢 Scamming,
😠 Money-grubbing
😢 Being Mercenary
😠 Shaming
😢 Judging...
...All the negative things we see on Facebook feeds, I receive messages about,
and we tell ourselves others will think.
So, I stayed broke. My clients ran the show. And I felt stuck as hell and like I
was only playing at being an adult.
Fast forward 24 odd years and here I am with a multi six-figure business (and
ambitions for more), a business partner, a full time employee and a part time
employee.
Now, I serve in a very different way as a practitioner and a businesswoman.
💛 I serve myself first by figuring out my boundaries.
💛 I serve by knowing exactly how I get results and communicating them so people
can choose whether to come on board.
💛 I serve by doing my best to hold every person who buys from me in any
capacity through a journey with a destination in mind.
💛 I serve by making sure my customer is served by clear and consistent
processes.
💛 I serve by investing in CPD
💛 I serve by charging enough that I never feel burnt out by or resentful of the
people I serve.
💛 I serve by giving my time back to my colleagues in the form of free monthly
lectures and clinical support in my community The Growth Partnership.

Very early in in my career, within a year of graduation in fact, I had the great
good fortune of helping a client conceive when they'd been told that natural
conception wasn't possible.
I felt at the time like one of those giant yellow hands I've seen at American
football games came down from the sky and said to me "Naaaaava, thiiiis is what
you're supppppposed to be doooooing".
The only problem was that I had no idea what to do in any kind of knowledgeable
or systematised way. They didn't teach me the difference between gynae and
fertility in Acupuncture school, and I had at that time (don't forget this was
more than 24 years ago) no books that had more than a picture of a BBT in them.
So I had to figure out how to replicate this amazing feat of conception!
👉So I paid every Practitioner I could think of for their time and expertise.
👉I read medical textbooks
👉I practiced on my patients and figured out so much by trying and testing and
tracking my results.
And as I mentioned in Friday's post, when I saw Jane Lyttleton speak about her
book when it was initially published, it spurred me on as I had for the first
time in front of me someone who epitomised the possibility of me being able to
have what she had, too.
I also had support. And I think this was crucial.
✨ My family supported me.
✨ My friend supported me (and let me practice needling on them.
✨ And then, my husband supported me.
Sometimes they did so financially, sometimes emotionally, sometimes both. I had
what I know know to be the PRIVILEGE of that early support which allowed me to
do all this☝️.
And then, step by step, I figured it out.

✴️Photo Dump✴️
1️⃣ I planted this peony bush years ago. I swear it's died and gone to heaven at
least three times. This year though, miraculously, it's decided to come good and
has given me not only a full flower but a ton of tiny buds raring to go.
2️⃣ Around this time of year, @riverford does Marmande tomatoes. They're
gorgeous served just with olive oil, sea salt (and if you're anything like me
and need to get out more*), fresh torn basil scattered over it and then a
coffee, a tissue and lie down! 🤭
3️⃣ My mum's homemade spelt Challah. Nothing like it. Unless you can eat wheat
in which case don't talk to me.
4️⃣ One of the dishes I served for Passover lunch for 14 people - Asparagus with
sauce Gribiche. @waitrose has the best recipe for this.
5️⃣ 'Nuff said.
6️⃣ *We did actually leave the house. For a wedding. I wore heels for the first
time since the pandemic. Turns out your feet go numb after a few hours and then
you're good to go for a while.

Without even realising it, I've passed 3000 people following me and this account
on my journey!
I think, therefore, it's probably time for a re-introduction in honour of this
milestone.
My name is Naava Carman. I'm an Australian living in London, UK (I've been here
a loooong time now but I still feel like an Aussie as much as a Brit!) and
always, a Practitioner first. In fact it's the only job I've ever done or can
ever see myself doing. It's a true calling - 24 years and counting. And, I
intend to do it until I drop down dead when I'm doing a headstand on my 100th
birthday!
👉 I'm an Acupuncturist, Herbalist, Birth Doula, NLP Practitioner, Trainee
Coach, Phlebotomist, Lymphatic Mojo Practitioner, Womb Massager, Mentor and
Educator.
👉 I'm part of an amazing community of Practitioners who have all graduated from
my Advanced Level Diploma in Fertility Acupuncture.
👉 I run a huge free community where I go live each month and give a lecture on
mindset, business or TCM, and use this forum to offer integrated, high-level
clinical support to practitioners.
✴️My big mission in life is to build a community which represents a level of
training and excellence which is the gold standard for all Fertility
Acupuncturists.✴️
Many years ago I sat in a lecture with Jane Lyttleton and I thought: yes, that's
it, that is what I'm going to do. It felt right (it still does) and since then
I've run headfirst at anything and everything I think could help me on my way.
Last year, I came full circle on this as I went to lecture at a conference in
Australia, and looked up to find Jane had come to listen to my lecture - mind
blown!
When I graduated, I wondered if I'd ever be able to move out of home or make a
living doing what I love. Gradually, I did make money and move forward in my
career but everything changed for me in 2016 when I had a change of family
circumstances and I had to triple my income within a year. I smashed it - and
smashed through what I thought was possible for my life and profession and I
haven't stopped since!

Do you know how to live with discomfort?
What I mean by this, is living with trying things out and not having them work.
👉 Living with thinking all the right thoughts and not having the outcomes you
want and not understanding why.
💙 Living with needing more clients and being really active on socials but not
seeing any return for your time.
🤔 Do you have enquiries that don't turn into patients, don't understand why and
feel embarrassed or ashamed of this situation?
🫣 Do you think you should be having more success than you do and find yourself
lying to embellish how well you're doing in peer-to-peer situations?
All of these things are SO COMMON in the journey of Entrepreneurship. And having

I fully acknowledge that money is not a motivating factor for everyone.

Flashback to the best part of twenty years ago when I used to have a gluten-free
baking company on the side whilst I was building up my TCM business.
The first two photos are from today - I'm still keeping my hand in occasionally
by making birthday cakes for family and friends - and the rest from the old
days.
The difference is that these days (and in the first two images you can see) I
buy all the decorations, whilst I used to hand make every single bit of them as
seen in the remaining images.
How the hell I had the time to do this stuff now boggles my mind! If only I knew
then what I know now about:
👉 time management,
👉 executive function,
👉 about what I can accomplish with very little free time and
👉 about her how much can be crammed into a day...
I probably would have tried to take over the world!

There's an ART to supporting ART.
For example, if you have a client with a thin lining going through IVF, you've
been told on your basic courses and in many books that the treatment of choice
is to Nourish Yin, Yang and/or Blood as appropriate. Right?
❓But what if your client has PCOS?
👉 What then?
🤷🏻♀️How should your treatment principles and choices change so as to help
them avoid the possibility of OHSS?
▶️ The answer to that, you can't find in a book.
