Ring Around the Mountain

On New Zealand’s North Island, a conical snow-capped volcano ringed by dark
green forest rises above dairy pasture. The often-snowcapped peak of Mount
Taranaki is the centerpiece of Egmont National Park. A circular piece of
land—with a 9.6-kilometer (6-mile) radius from the volcano’s summit—was first
formally protected as a forest reserve in 1881. With some subsequent additions,
it became New Zealand’s second national park in 1900.

EARTH INFORMATION CENTER

For more than 50 years, NASA satellites have provided data on Earth's land,
water, air, temperature, and climate. NASA's Earth Information Center allows
visitors to see how our planet is changing in six key areas: sea level rise and
coastal impacts, health and air quality, wildfires, greenhouse gases,
sustainable energy, and agriculture.
