BD STUDENTS IN USA PROTEST BRUTAL POLICE ATTACK AND KILLING OF DOZENS OF
STUDENTS

Bangladeshi (BD) researchers and students from at least 24 universities across
the United States have strongly condemned and protested the ongoing brutal
police attack and killing of dozens of students who have been demonstrating
reform in the quota system in public jobs in Bangladesh. They made the
condemnation in separate statements and human chain protests organized under the
banners of their associations at their respective universities on Wednesday and
Thursday (USA local time), according to press releases of the student
associations.

The students and researchers expressed solidarity with the protesting students
and demanded punishment for those involved in the attacks and killings. They
displayed various placards with slogans calling for quota reform and condemning
the ongoing heinous attack on peaceful protesters.

The student associations also called for immediate and rational reform of the
quota system in Bangladesh’s public jobs. Identifying the ongoing suppression of
the Bangladesh government on student protesters as unprecedented and
unacceptable, they urged the international communities to come forward to save
student lives and support their rights of movement. Rahat Mollick, President of
BSA at the University of Iowa, said, as Bangladeshi students, we are expressing
our grief and solidarity, and we strongly condemn the police firing that
resulted in the death of six people and the injury of hundreds more during the
quota reform movement in Bangladeshi universities. “Any aggressive response to
peaceful assemblies is an affront to civil liberties and basic human rights. We
condemn such deplorable actions,” a statement from Michigan State University
states.

The 24 universities include Arizona State University, Atlantis University, Ball
State University, Colorado State University, Florida International University,
Indiana University Bloomington, Iowa State University, Kennesaw State
University, Michigan State University, Missouri State University, Missouri
University of Science and Technology, Montana State University, Oklahoma State
University, Texas Tech University, University of Central Florida, University of
Iowa, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Maryland College Park,
University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Notre Dame, University of
Southern Mississippi, University of Texas at El Paso, Utah State University, and
West Virginia University.
