foundations and institutional donors? Do you have strong networks and are you
able to spot opportunities and new markets for fundraising? And are you eager to
support the rights of some of the most marginalised peoples in the world? ✔️ If
yes, perhaps you are our new Donor Relations Manager and Fundraiser. 🤝 IWGIA
has ambitious goals to increase our support to Indigenous Peoples’ rights. As
part of this we must diversify and increase our funding. As Donor Relations
Manager and Fundraiser, you are key to making this happen by taking the lead on

📢 In an official news release, UN experts raised serious concern over ongoing
retaliations against Indigenous human rights defenders advocating against the
development of the Chhaya Center in #Nepal. 🚨 The construction of the
entertainment complex results from the encroachment of Indigenous Newar lands in
Kathmandu's tourist district of Thamel, jeopardizing the capacity of Indigenous
communities to fulfil their cultural practices. 🇳🇵 UN experts urge US-based
Marriot International and the Government of Nepal to suspend the ongoing
development and ensure accountability for the violation of Indigenous Pradhan
Newar community´s #humanrights. ✊ IWGIA stands in solidarity with
#IndigenousPeoples in Nepal in their campaign to #BoycottMarriott. 👉 Read the

🔙 #TBT In #Nepal, Protected Areas are responsible for the serious violations of
Indigenous Peoples' human rights. 🇳🇵 Covering over 20% of the country, most of
the #ProtectedAreas are established in Indigenous ancestral territories. The
creation of #conservation areas on Indigenous Peoples´ lands without their free,
prior and informed consent (FPIC) result in forced displacement, restrictions to
access and use of their traditional land and resources, systematic
#discrimination and violence including sexual violence against Indigenous women.
🚨 Looking into the situation in the Chitwan National Park, this report
demonstrates WWF's failure to implement a #humanrights based approach to
conservation securing Indigenous Peoples' rights 👉 Read the full publication

🗓️ Today is the first day of the 79th Ordinary Session of the African
Commission on Human & Peoples’ Rights. 🌍 The African Commission on Human and
Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) was inaugurated in 1987 to promote and protect human and
peoples’ rights on the African continent. ✊ In 2001, the #ACHPR established a
Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities in Africa (now WGIPM) to
monitor the situation of Indigenous Peoples in #Africa. 📢 In 2023, the #WGIPM
reported on the continued violations of the #humanrights of Indigenous
communities in Kenya, Uganda and Algeria. Additionally, an Advanced Course on
the Rights of #IndigenousPeoples in Africa was held in November 2023 at the
Centre for Human Rights of the University of Pretoria in South Africa, in
collaboration with IWGIA. 👉 Read the full article in The Indigenous World 2024:

📢Today is International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
#FGM 👂Listen to the message from Judy Kipkenda, an #Indigenous woman and #Human
Rights defender from the Ogiek people in Kenya 🇰🇪. In her statement, she
addresses the discrimination against women who have not undergone circumcision,
or Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). As part of her work, Judy has heard stories
of women who had nowhere to report the discrimination and abuse they suffered,
and for those who did report their claims to the chief, they faced retaliation
for doing so. ❗ It is urgent to challenge and end harassment and violence,
discriminatory attitudes and stereotyping based on gender, ethnicity, and
Indigenous identity – trends that are entrenched obstacles to Indigenous women’s
equality. #EndFGM #IndigenousPeoples

75th anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration. Even
though in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights there are no specific
references to #IndigenousPeoples, this does not diminish its crucial importance.
The Universal Declaration on Human Rights serves as the foundational cornerstone
of the entire UN human rights system, and consequently, it also forms the basis
for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Although
important advances have been made in the last decades for the respect of
Indigenous Peoples rights, there is still a long way to go. ❗ Of particular
concern in this year have been the recurrent eviction and continuous
militarization of Indigenous Peoples lands, state brutality, land grabbing
caused by militarized fortress conservation activities, and criminalization of
Indigenous rights defenders. ✊ IWGIA will continue to be present documenting the
violation of Indigenous Peoples rights and working as an ally in the struggle
for the recognition of their rights. #HumanRights #HumanRightsDay
