In her statement, she addresses the discrimination against women who have not undergone circumcision, or Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). As part of her work, Judy has heard stories of women who had nowhere to report the discrimination and abuse they suffered, and for those who did report their claims to the chief, they faced retaliation for doing so. ❗ It is urgent to challenge and end harassment and violence, discriminatory attitudes and stereotyping based on gender, ethnicity, and Indigenous identity – trends that are entrenched obstacles to Indigenous women’s equality. #EndFGM #IndigenousPeoples 6 1 0:58 75th anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration. Even though in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights there are no specific references to #IndigenousPeoples, this does not diminish its crucial importance. The Universal Declaration on Human Rights serves as the foundational cornerstone of the entire UN human rights system, and consequently, it also forms the basis for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Although important advances have been made in the last decades for the respect of Indigenous Peoples rights, there is still a long way to go. ❗ Of particular concern in this year have been the recurrent eviction and continuous militarization of Indigenous Peoples lands, state brutality, land grabbing caused by militarized fortress conservation activities, and criminalization of Indigenous rights defenders. ✊ IWGIA will continue to be present documenting the violation of Indigenous Peoples rights and working as an ally in the struggle for the recognition of their rights. #HumanRights #HumanRightsDay 4 0 0:58 Human Rights Day 2023 🔊 Today is #HumanRightsDay This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration.
