WELCOME TO SUNWAY UNIVERSITY AND SUNWAY CITY

Sunway University was established in 2011, but its predecessor Sunway College
was one of the first buildings built in Sunway City around 1986 after the
university’s founder and chancellor Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah bought an abandoned
tin mine and started to fulfil his dream of converting it into a green, smart,
sustainable city. Sunway City has grown around the university and demonstrates
that it is possible to transform wasteland into sustainable development, a
metaphor for what is necessary to restore the planet’s health.

The college and university play a big part in Cheah’s efforts to provide
education as a route to greater prosperity for all. Sunway University provides
holistic education where knowledge and skills are complemented by instilling
values and a mindset that ensure graduates have the best possible employability
prospects. To strengthen their values and mindset, all Sunway students take part
in second-year courses on entrepreneurship, integrity, sustainable development,
planetary health and community service. 

Research at Sunway University also focuses on sustainable development and
planetary health in a multidisciplinary and quadruple helix approach. This has
resulted in significant growth in the number and quality of publications with a
40 per cent increase in the number of articles published in 2023, and much
improved quality, as measured in citations per paper. This contributes to the
second dream of Cheah, which is for Sunway University to develop into a Harvard
of the East.

Sunway City now has a population of 200,000 and is a 15-minute walking city
where all major components – including the university, medical centre, Pyramid
Mall, Sunway Resort Hotel and the Lagoon Theme Park – are connected by elevated,
covered walkways. It is only 40 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport
and 30 minutes from the city centre.

Established in 2011 by its founder and chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr Jeffrey
Cheah, Sunway University has emerged as one of South-east Asia’s leading private
