Rewatching this film a few years back I was concerned about mistreatment of
animals during its production, particularly in the horrific fire sequence. In
the Wiki article Britt Ekland is recorded as saying that some animals were
killed during production, whereas author Robin Hardy said that care was taken in
this department and that the Wicker Man of the title had no animals within when
it was set ablaze. Any info?

I watched the original theatrical release of The Wicker Man a few nights ago for
the first time, and found the goat screaming in the end sequence hands down the
most disturbing moment of the entire film. Included on the same disc was a half
hour documentary The Wicker Enigma , where someone involved in the production, I
can't remember who, said that care was taken to protect the animals from the
flames and that they were unharmed, even if clearly in distress, with a goat
even urinating on Edward Woodward continuously. When faced with accusations of
animal cruelty at the time, this individual responded quite tongue-in-cheek with
something like "only the soft, cuddly animals" were or would be harmed, and
apparently put the accusations to bed at the time of production.

Apparently Britt Ekland held some ill will against the film for a number of
years, refusing to speak of her experience until more recently, largely over the
body double used in the full-length shots of the nude scene and the size of her
backside. There's still debate over who her double actually was and whether or
not Ekland had her speaking voice dubbed over as was once believed. Out of
everyone involved in the production, its pretty likely that she of all people
would make such accusations, not to say that I don't believe there is at least
something to them, or that the truth really lies somewhere in-between. I can't
fathom how they would have ensured the safety of all those animals when given
the restraints of the production, when using such practical effects and with
Woodward's safety their obvious main concern.

The Wicker Man strikes me as one of those films that's so wrapped up in its own
mythology at this point, one stoked largely by a devoted fanbase, that we'll
never truly know.

Yes, my issue here is not just physical harm, but any distress engendered in the
making of the film.

I've found the documentary on YouTube if you haven't seen it or if anyone else
is interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyMQxzyEsIQ

I've little idea of the actual laws surrounding animal welfare in 70s Britain,
but I'm pretty sure an animal's emotional distress would have been little
considered. I wouldn't be surprised if just the shock of filming those scenes
was enough to kill any of the animals involved.

On the subject of Folk Horror, I honestly think 1971's Straw Dogs with Dustin
Hoffman has to be included in the genre and is probably one of the most
effective too in its use of a rural British setting to pit a fish out of water
against a sinister local community.

Will no one think of the bees?

No bees in '73's.

No, not seen it, although I've got the book on its making somewhere. I can't
recall reading anything about animal treatment in it, though. And it does appear
that even directors one otherwise admires took little note of this issue.
