As of 10 p.m. CDT, Tropical Storm Nicholas was located near 22.5 N and 95.5 W, or about 160 miles east-southeast of La Pesca, Mexico and 240 miles south-southeast of the Mouth of the Rio Grande. Nicholas has sustained winds of 40 mph and a minimum central pressure of 1008 millibars or 29.77 inches of mercury. The storm is currently inching north at 2 mph. Nicholas will continue moving north to northwest through Monday while slowly gaining strength in the warm Gulf water. It will then turn north and parallel the south Texas Coast Monday night into Tuesday morning before likely making landfall Tuesday near the central Texas Gulf Coast as a strong tropical storm. Tropical Storm Warnings have been posted for the Texas Coast from the Mouth of the Rio Grande to High Island, Texas, and in Mexico from Barra el Mezquital northward to the U.S./Mexico border. Meanwhile, a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from east of High Island, Texas to Sabine Pass. A Hurricane Watch has been issued from Port Aransas to Freeport, Texas. In addition, a storm surge of 2 of 4 feet has prompted Storm Surge Watches from the Mouth of the Rio Grande to High Island, Texas, from San Luis Pass, Texas to Rutherford Beach, La., including Galveston Bay, with a Storm Surge Warning in effect from Port Aransas to San Luis Pass, Texas and for Aransas Bay, San Antonio Bay and Matagorda Bay. After making landfall, Nicholas is set to crawl inland and slowly weaken to a tropical depression through the end of the workweek. As a result of the slow movement, heavy rainfall will be the biggest threat with the storm. A large swath of 6 of 10 inches of rain is expected from north of Corpus Christi, Texas all the way to Lake Charles, La. It’s not out of the question for the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast to pick up more than a foot of rainfall. Flash flooding and even road closures because of the high water are expected for several days along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast. Nicholas is the 14th named storm of the already busy 2021 Atlantic Hurricane season. However, this is far behind the record-breaking 2020 hurricane season that already was on the 20th named storm in mid-September. Make sure to avoid flooded roadways if you encounter flooded roads. It only takes a few inches of running water to render a vehicle dangerous to operate. Remember the phrase, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” should you come across floodwaters.
