Kazuo Ueda was appointed Governor of the Bank of Japan in April 2023. He started
his career as Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the
University of British Columbia in 1980. From 1982, he served as Associate
Professor at Osaka University and in 1993 became Professor at the University of
Tokyo, specialising in macroeconomics and financial theory. From 1998 to 2005,
he was Member of the Bank of Japan's Policy Board, the central bank's highest
decision-making body, where he led discussions on the introduction of forward
guidance under the Bank's zero interest rate policy. After retiring from the
Bank of Japan's Policy Board, he became Professor at the Graduate School of
Economics at the University of Tokyo in 2005 (serving as Dean from 2005 to
2007). In 2017, he was appointed Professor at Kyoritsu Women's University. Apart
from his academic roles, Dr Ueda also served as an outside member of the Board
of Directors at the Development Bank of Japan from 2008 to 2023. He was also
Chairman of the Investment Committee of Japan's Government Pension Investment
Fund (GPIF) from 2010 to 2014. From 2011 to 2012, he was President of the
Japanese Economic Association. Dr Ueda holds a Bachelor of Science degree in
Mathematics from the University of Tokyo and a Doctorate of Philosophy in
Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
