We are looking to appoint three new Trustees and a new member to join our Board and support us on our journey to ‘Outstanding’. We are looking for people who can add value to our strategic decision-making and contribute to our organisational success. * Location: Oswestry, Shropshire * Salary: Voluntary * Closing date: By 12 p.m. Monday 19th September 2022 ABOUT THE ROLE OF THE BOARD Our children are at the heart of what we do, and we strive to provide the best start in life for all at Woodside Primary School. It is of principal importance that our Governors (Non-Executive Directors) understand and embody our passion for providing our children and their families with the best care and education. At Woodside, we go beyond education; we believe that a school’s role is to not only educate, but to nurture, support, and safeguard. To ensure that we are able to do that, we are looking for skilled individuals with a strategic vision to take us on the next stage of our journey. We would like four people to join us, with career experience, ideally in Finance, Risk and Audit, or Education Leadership who can add to our existing board structure and offer new perspectives on how we meet our goals and tackle our challenges. Our board ensure that we are delivering the highest quality of education and value for money and that the executive leadership team are held to account for delivering our strategic intent. TRUSTEE Being a trustee, you will contribute to the forward movement in a practical and tangible way. You will join us and be responsible for our formal processes and procedures and to ratify decisions. Candidates applying to a trustee role will need to be prepared to commit to 6-8 meetings per academic year, in addition to these, you will be invited to join other key events such as recruitment days, fayres, and school visits. You will also be required to read, understand and offer your voice to our strategic proposals, goals, and to how we overcome any challenges. You must be prepared to understand the landscape that we operate in and how we move forwards within it. MEMBER Being a board member, you are here to act as a ‘critical friend’ to our Trustees. Candidates applying to a member’s role will need to be prepared to commit to 1 AGM, 1 Members Committee meeting and also be ready to meet at other occasions where your attendance is deemed necessary. You will also be required to read, understand and offer your voice to our strategic proposals, goals, and to how we overcome any challenges. You must be prepared to understand the landscape that we operate in and how we move forwards within it. FINANCE We are open to the backgrounds of individuals, and we would welcome someone with the following: * A positive track record as a Finance Leader. * An Executive-level background. * Someone who has made a significant impact within their current or former organisation. * An understanding of the public sector. Whilst the children are at the centre of everything that we do, it is fundamental that our Trust Board recognises the need for Woodside Primary School to continue to remain financially healthy and able to identify the areas that require investment. Our new post-holder must be able to contribute to the development of strategy, propose change and ratify key decisions to ensure that this happens. RISK AND AUDIT We are seeking someone with an understanding of managing risk. As our Board diversifies, we need to ensure that we have a Trustee who can help us to manage our risk and remain compliant. With the latest government whitepaper, being an empty MAT means that we face a future with many possibilities. With our strategy to ensure that we continue to provide the highest quality of education, care and opportunity to Shropshire, we need someone who understands how we meet the requirements of the DfE, ESFA and Ofsted. Whilst education experience is non-essential, the ability to learn and adhere to complex regulations means we continue to be financially healthy, educationally strong, and within the realms of the government’s requirements. EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP We are seeking someone with educational leadership experience. As our Trust Board is comprised of expert individuals from a variety of sectors, we are keen to welcome someone who has a background rooted in education leadership and school improvement. We are incredibly proud that we are rated ‘good’ by Ofsted, and the person(s) appointed should be well versed in what that looks like, and support to us achieve ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’. We are specifically looking for people with a background in school or academy trust leadership, with local authority or educational charity leadership experience, or experience of being an Ofsted inspector. These skills would greatly complement our existing membership. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Woodside is actively encouraging applications from under-represented groups and from candidates based outside of Shropshire. As we build our organisation, we understand the value of drawing on expertise from outside our locality to help us continue delivering the best quality for all the children in Woodside school. I am delighted that you are considering one of the roles we have the opportunity to fill this year: * Board Member * Trustee x 3 (1 x finance, 1 x audit, and 1 x education) As Chair, I take immense pride, as do all the Members and Trustees, in being part of the Woodside Primary School Trust Board. Woodside School is a very special place, with an excellent Senior Leadership team, committed and caring staff, and over 650 children attending from Nursery through to Year 6. The school is Ofsted rated as ‘Good’ with outstanding elements. As a Board of Trustees, we are committed to ensuring that our children are happy, confident and aspirational, always trying their best. The school has a strong set of values; our children are encouraged to be respectful, resilient and to take responsibility for their own actions, making positive contributions that are recognised and celebrated by the wider community. The Board is committed to maximising the positive impact for our pupils of our work and, to help us, we are looking for candidates to, not only bring their core skills in finance, or audit or education but also insight and enthusiasm, to support and challenge and to ensure that we are setting ambitious targets for ourselves and the school. This is an exciting time to be joining the Board, as we launch a new strategic plan and look to develop our on-site Early Help facility, the Well Being Centre. If you feel you have the skills we are seeking and you are committed to making a difference through active engagement at meetings, then we would be delighted to receive your application. I look forward to meeting you and hearing what you feel you can offer us. Regards, Gordon Channon Chair of Woodside Academy Trust Board ABOUT THE ORGANISATION At Woodside Primary School, our mission is to ensure that our children are happy, confident and aspirational, always trying their best. Woodside children are encouraged to be respectful, resilient and to take responsibility for their own actions, making positive contributions that are recognised and celebrated by the wider community. Our school values of creativity, aspiration, respect, and empathy are woven into all aspects of life at Woodside. Children are given guidance and responsibilities, and have opportunities to contribute to the wider life of the school and beyond. We actively promote the well-being of our children, to ensure barriers to learning and thriving are overcome. To achieve our mission, we provide our children with a safe and nurturing space to discover and grow. Our children have access to high-quality resources, including experienced, caring and dedicated staff who respond to each child as an individual, as well as ensuring all members of our school community feel part of the Woodside family. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced, and tailored to our children, reflecting our unique Woodside context. From the moment children start at Woodside, we ensure each child’s foundations for learning are strong, enabling them to become lifelong learners. We understand that language and communication is the glue holding together all other learning. Reading, writing and mathematics lay the foundations for enriching, engaging and connected teaching and learning opportunities. These provide our children with experiences and knowledge that light the spark of aspiration, a love for learning, and support them to navigate their way through the challenges they may face in the future. We aim to equip every Woodside child with the tools to enable them to live happy, fulfilled lives and contribute positively to society. Woodside Primary School is a large and very popular primary school serving the town of Oswestry, whilst also attracting pupils from local villages; many of the children’s parents and grandparents also attended this school. We converted to an academy on 1st May 2013. In May 2022, there were 661 pupils on roll from Nursery to Year 6, organised into 23 single-age classes. A Sure Start Delivery Centre on-site closed in December 2018, and the building transferred to us. We are currently developing our vision of it becoming a Wellbeing Centre to support children with social, emotional and mental health needs, together with their families. There are relatively high levels of deprivation locally; our school is situated in the Gatacre Ward of Oswestry, the thirteenth most deprived ward in Shropshire and 9812/32482 nationally.
