SF 4TH ANNUAL VOLUME BY JUDITH MERRIL

Read Now

Greenberg revisited 1959 in their anthology The Great SF Stories 21 (1959),
which included these stories (I’ve bolded stories that Merril also picked): That
makes it hard to compare this best-of-the-year anthology against others –
although in 1959-1960 Merril was the sole contemporary annual anthologist. It
annoys me that Merril didn’t stay within the 1959 boundary and included four
stories from 1960. An Inquiry Concerning the Curvature of the Earth’s Surface
and Divers Investigations of a Metaphysical Nature.

Luckily we have to tell us where these stories from 19 were originally published
and reprinted (click on title). Probably out of the 400 members only a handful
have a copy. This presents a kind of scavenger hunt to find the stories because
most of the members do not have a copy of this 1960 book. Our Facebook group is
scheduled to read The Year’s Best S-F: 5th Annual Edition edited by Judith
Merril in February and March.

A HEART OF BLOOD AND ASHES BY MILLA VANE

It doesn’t really matter which one you read first. Where does The Beast of
Blackmoor fit? Should I worry about spoilers?Ĭhronologically, the novella takes
place just before the events of A Heart of Blood & Ashes (Book 1), but they
don’t share any characters and do not spoil each other. Short Story: Silent
Night (just an extra little story)īook 3: A Dance of Smoke & Steel Q. Prequel
Novella: The Beast of Blackmoor (optional) Although each book features a new
couple and their romance/primary plot is resolved by the end (there are no
cliffhangers), the Gathering of Dragons trilogy features an over-arching
storyline that is probably best enjoyed in order. I’ve also written two
companion stories ( The Beast of Blackmoor & Silent Night) that are outside the
main story arc, but include characters and events mentioned in those novels.

WASHINGTON'S PROVIDENCE BY CHRIS LAFATA

Few people have even heard of George Washington, and the short-lived American
Revolution failed-presumably because Washington wasn't alive to lead it.

But being stranded in the British Colony of New York isn't what he signed up
for. Accompanying Casanova to the opening night of Mozart's opera, Don Giovanni,
was even better. Getting relationship advice from the legendary lover, Casanova,
was valuable. Until this point, the time-travel job has had its perks. There's
just one problem: When he arrives in 1789, there is no inauguration-and no
United States. The combination of history and time travel and engaging dialogue
in an upbeat style has whetted my appetite to read more." - Amazon Breakthrough
Novel Award Expert Reviewer Former history professor John Curry has been
recruited by a time-travel company to scout the best vantage point for clients
to witness the inauguration of the first President of the United States.

The characters are likable and it gets right to the action. 2012 Amazon
Breakthrough Novel Award Quarterfinalist (top 100 out of 10,000 entries, General
Fiction Category) "This is a premise that will draw people in and it's very
interesting.

HENRY AND RIBSY SERIES

Readers who’ve already breezed through the Ramona Quimby novels will love
picking this one up. Beezus appears as Henry’s best friend, helping him to get a
bike when all his plans keep failing, and Ramona is-of course-the pesky little
sister foiling their plans. Many of Cleary’s books take place in the same
universe, and in this second Henry Huggins novel, characters Beezus and Ramona
are introduced. Buy it: Henry Huggins at Amazon | Henry Huggins at Bookshop 2.

The first of a six-book series, this one is perfect for readers moving up from
shorter chapter books. The title character Henry Huggins befriends a dog, Ribsy,
and the two become an inseparable pair, threatened only when Ribsy’s original
owner resurfaces. While Cleary’s first novel may not feature smartphones or
Roblox, it remains eminently readable.

“I feel very deep sympathy for people who feel they were born in the wrong
body,” Horne said.

In a press conference held Wednesday morning, Horne laid out that he
historically has supported the expansion of LGBTQ civil rights but holds back
with regard to transgender athletes. The 235-page document used as Horne’s
defense references studies conducted by primarily right-leaning and conservative
organizations and news articles. PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Arizona State
Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne and his legal team have responded
to a lawsuit filed by transgender girls over a law that bans them from
participating in school sports.

DISCWORLD THE WATCH

Read Now

The cruel irony is that, for all the efforts the producers of The Watch made to
separate themselves from the source material to present a " punk rock thriller,"
the show was entirely beholden to the original Discworld books. To give one
example, the character of Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler, who was originally a
peddler of questionable sausages in a bun and anything else that might be
hurriedly sold out of a suitcase on a street corner, was transfigured into
Throat a drug-dealer and police snitch, played by Ruth Madeley from The Rook.

This was because The Watch took character names and concepts from the original
Discworld novels, but applied them haphazardly to wholly new characters.

Indeed, the credits for each episode of The Watch described it as being "
inspired by" the works of Terry Pratchett rather than being " based on" them.
The Watch ranks dead last on the list of Terry Pratchett adaptations because it
can't properly be said to be an adaptation.

GOD'S SECRETARIES BY ADAM NICOLSON

The Bible that they produced with their collective wisdom and skill, James
hoped, would settle dissent on any number of fronts, binding together the
dissident branches of the still-new Church of England, calming Puritan
disquietude, perhaps even helping bring about a reconciliation of some kind with
the Catholic Church. British travel writer Nicolson ( Sea Room, 2002, etc.)
anatomizes the creation of the 1611 English-language Bible, perhaps the only
work of art ever made by a committee.īut what a committee it was: made up some
of the finest poets, translators, and scholars in the thoroughly well educated
realm of King James I.
