VIDEO: 4 STEPS TO EXTEND A HAND

VIDEO: 4 STEPS TO EXTEND A HAND

Deep down, we all crave acceptance. We want to feel appreciated and valued. We
want to belong, and not in a shallow way, either. We want to know that who we
are, what we’re capable of, and what we contribute matters to our employers and
our colleagues.

Thankfully, by following these four steps, leaders and organizations can extend
a hand, and help their team members feel just that:

Champion allyship. Everyone needs an ally, that person who makes an effort to
acknowledge and include you. In fact, allies are so powerful that when we have
one, even active exclusion can feel a little less hurtful. As CEO and cofounder
of BetterUp, Alexi Robichaux says, “It can be as simple as having one person who
you feel has your back.”

Encourage empathy. When it comes to creating a culture of inclusivity, empathy
is likely the most important tool of all. You can’t fix a problem you don’t
understand, and the truth is, most people won’t simply offer up that they’re
feeling excluded. Instead, leaders and colleagues need to make an effort to
empathize with others and ensure inclusion prior to any issues.

Mind the HQCs. Different from your Ps and Qs, these are high-quality
connections, meaning interactions that have a positive impact on our lives and
work. As author and journalist Emily Esfahani Smith writes in The Power of
Meaning, “During a high quality connection, each person is tuned in to each
other and both reciprocate positive regard and care. As a result, both people
feel valued.”

Call out exclusion aloud. You cannot create a true culture of inclusivity and
belonging if acts of exclusion—intentional or not—are allowed to persist.
Because of this, it’s essential to set the tone. When exclusion happens, face it
head on. Being proactive and vocal will help right the wrong faster and help
stop it from happening again in the future.

When it comes to the benefits of belonging, the numbers don’t lie. A survey of
1,800 workers conducted by BetterUp found that employees who feel like they
belong take 75 percent fewer sick days, are markedly more productive, and have
far lower turnover rates, all of which results in millions of dollars of gain
for their employers.

Watch: What does inclusion mean to you? In this video from EYUKCareers, people
talk about the statistics of true inclusion, why it’s important, and explain who
has helped them feel not just that they fit in, but that they belong.

Take Away: Belonging might seem like a simple thing, but when you’ve been
excluded, you know it packs a heavy emotional punch. Humans are social
creatures. We crave acceptance and inclusion. And when we feel valued, we’re
happier, healthier, and more productive. In short, belonging makes us shine.
