Beyond the capabilities of existing Large Language Models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s
ChatGPT, Devin is an AI that can handle the entire software development
lifecycle autonomously, including authoring, debugging, and deploying code.

WHO MADE DEVIN?

Devin was created by Cognition, a newly established AI business supported by
tech industry heavyweights including Tony Xu, co-founder of Doordash, and Elad
Gil, a former executive of Twitter, as well as Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund.
Devin is currently private; only a few number of clients are able to reach him
at this time, per the company.


Founders of the company are Scott Wu, Steven Hao, and Walden Yan, who’re all
coders themselves. Cognition’s team of 10 specializes in coding — between them,
they’ve won 10 gold medals are international coding competitions.

THE DETAILS:

Devin uses its own command line, code editor, and browser to systematically
execute software projects, and it can debug its own code by adding print
statements to identify errors.

 * On the SWE-bench coding benchmark, Devin has outperformed other AI models
   with a 13.86% issue resolution rate, significantly higher than competitors
   like Anthropic’s Claude 2 and GPT-4.


 * Devin can adapt to new technologies, contribute to its established
   repositories, train its own AI models, and even handle real jobs on Upwork.
 * In one instance, Devin discovered how to run code to generate images with
   hidden messages through a blog post.
 * Devin also made a working Chrome extension that turns any Github repo into a
   long prompt text file

TO CONCLUDE:

Devin’s speed and efficiency in software development tasks are demonstrated by
early users’ reports that they could create simple games and entire websites in
as little as 5 to 10 minutes. It can manage full development projects from the
beginning to the end, from writing the code to fixing related bugs to executing
the finished product.

 * It greatly contributes to realizing what NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang stated
   regarding the necessity of ceasing to require kids to learn how to code. The
   primary programming language required to work with Devin is English.
 * Two things that will become more valuable in a post-Devin world: —
   Imagination — API Keys

Devin is an impressive demo of what perhaps follows next: coordinating a number
of tools that a developer needs to string together to write code: a Terminal, a
Browser, a Code editor, etc., and human oversight that moves to increasingly
higher level of abstraction.

There is a lot of work not just on the AI part but also the UI/UX part. How does
a human provide oversight? What are they looking at? How do they nudge the AI
down a different path? How do they debug what went wrong? It is very likely that
we will have to change up the code editor, substantially. In any case, software
engineering is on track to change substantially. And it will look a lot more
like supervising the automation, while pitching in high-level commands, ideas or
progression strategies, in English.
