We’re continuing to focus on renewing older gas mains to maintain the reliability and safety of our gas network. Find out what you can do to keep warm, safe and energy efficient this winter. BE SAFE AROUND GAS Natural gas is flammable. Gas appliances can leak carbon monoxide, making them dangerous if not properly serviced. That’s why it’s important to use a qualified gasfitter to maintain the safety of your gas appliances in your home or business. 1. A qualified gasfitter should service your gas heater every two years – this will help make sure it’s safe and efficient. 2. Always use a qualified gasfitter to service your gas appliances according to the manufacturer’s instructions and record the service date. 3. Ask your qualified gasfitter for a Certificate of Compliance for any work they do in your home or business. 4. Don’t attempt to fix your gas heater yourself – this isn’t a safe DIY project and you must call a qualified gasfitter. To find a qualified gasfitter, visit Energy Safe Victoria. Read a transcript of the video here. For more tips on staying warm and safe this winter, see Gas safety tips. SAVE ON YOUR GAS BILL Gas usage goes up during winter. Here are some things you can do to save on your gas bill: 1. If you’ve got your ducted heating on, close doors and vents in rooms you’re not using. 2. Fit draught seals to the openings of external windows and doors. This could save you up to $30 per year on your bills. 3. Set your heater’s thermostat to 18 and 20 degrees. Every degree higher can add 15% to your heating costs. Read a transcript of the video here. For more tips on how to save on your winter gas bill, see Gas saving tips. KNOW WHAT TO DO DURING AN OUTAGE We’re focused on maintaining and improving our gas network to keep supplying safe and reliable gas to our customers. Sometimes unforeseen events may cause temporary interruptions to your gas supply. We always aim to restore supply as quickly as possible, to reduce any inconvenience. GAS LEAK OR OUTAGE? * Call us on 13 67 07 to report any gas leaks or interruptions to your gas supply. You don’t need to turn your gas meter off before reporting it to us. * For your safety, please stay away from suspected faulty or leaking gas pipes. * For more information, see Gas outages. * If you’re a life support customer, call our priority line on 1800 818 832 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Take our quick quiz and find out: BUILDING A SAFE AND RELIABLE GAS NETWORK Our gas network covers western Melbourne and central and western Victoria. We’re focused on building a safe and reliable gas network for our customers year-round. Last year we upgraded around 55kms of low and medium pressure mains to high pressure mains. This included upgrading many of the oldest mains within our network across Melbourne’s inner west, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Colac. This year we’ll upgrade around 72kms of low-pressure mains in Ballarat and Colac. We’ll also continue upgrading mains in Melbourne’s inner west and Geelong, and start work on our mains upgrades in Portland, Horsham and Stawell. Read a transcript of the video here.
