ANESTHESIA AND MEMORY LOSS IN ELDERLY PATIENTS

Share
One of the most important concerns for patients after undergoing surgery is
postoperative cognitive decline. It affects a large number of older adults.
dementia and wandering Postoperative neurocognitive decline may share mechanisms
with Alzheimer's disease.

Studies have shown that general anesthesia can have an adverse impact on
thinking and memory. However, there is still much to learn about the long-term
effects of anesthesia on the brain.

functioning of people who had undergone orthopedic surgery. Overall, the
patients showed a small decrease in immediate memory over the course of four
years. During the post-operative period, there were also declines in verbal
fluency, attention, and constructional praxis.

Another study looked at the effects of anesthesia on a group of elderly patients
without dementia. After surgery, they completed a computerized cognitive
battery. While there were no significant changes in the immediate memory of the
patients, they did show some cognitive decline in their geometric form
association. They were also more likely to have abnormal memory than the control
group.

Finally, a new study examined the long-term effects of anesthesia on cognitive
tests designed to screen for dementia. The study was performed on elderly adults
55 years of age or older who underwent major non-cardiac surgery.

Researchers found that 10% of the patients showed long-term mental
deterioration. Previously, reports had indicated that some elderly patients were
at risk for anesthesia-related short-term memory loss. Moreover, the study found
that some types of anesthesia could lead to faster recovery from short-term
changes in the brain.
