Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) is a major global exchange group
and a holding company listed in Hong Kong, China.
HKEX operates exchanges in Hong Kong and London. Its members include The Stock
Exchange of Hong Kong Limited, Hong Kong Futures Exchange Limited, Hong Kong
Securities Clearing Company Limited, Hong Kong Stock Exchange Options Clearing
House Limited and Hong Kong Futures Clearing Company Limited, as well as the
world's leading base metals market, the London Metal Exchange (LME). The current
chairman of the board is Laura Cha, and the group chief executive is Ivy Chan.
In recent years, HKEX has implemented a series of reforms to develop into a
leading global exchange that provides a full range of products and services and
is fully integrated vertically, and is ready to seize the opportunities of
prudent and accelerated opening up under China's capital account.
On April 24, 2018, HKEX issued new IPO rules, allowing companies with dual-class
share structures to be listed and allowing biotech companies that have not yet
made a profit to be listed in Hong Kong. This reform is regarded by market
participants as the most significant listing system reform of HKEX in 25 years.
As the focus of this IPO reform, unequal voting rights have become the focus of
attention. In 2018, the amount of new stock financing in the Hong Kong market
once again topped the global list.
On January 5, 2021, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange announced that it had invested
in a 7% stake in the newly established Guangzhou Futures Exchange (Guangzhou
Futures Exchange). The investment by the Hong Kong Stock Exchange involved an
amount of RMB 210 million. On the evening of June 6, 2022, the Hong Kong Stock
Exchange announced that the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China had made a written
approval under Section 69 of the Securities and Futures Ordinance to reappoint
Laura Cha as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
In March 2024, media reports said that former Chairman of the Hong Kong
Securities and Futures Commission, Stanley Tong, would take over as Chairman of
the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on April 24.
