ANIMATION REEL 2023

WATCH ON YOUTUBE (if player doesn’t work)

(Older Animation Reels Below)

It’s been over 10 years since I’d assembled my previous animation reel from
scratch (not counting a couple of recuts). I dreaded doing another reel for a
long time since it takes a tremendous amount of time. And though I really enjoy
the process once I get into it, I would always rather animate or draw than sit
around making reels.

The point was to make it 100% fresh, not a single clip from any of my previous
reels. Its been over 10 years so I’m expected to be twice as experienced. I hope
it shows. Almost all the clips here and in-game animations.

Below is the numbered breakdown of all the shots:

01 – Mutated Tree Monster done for an indie game. The design and the sculpt were
done by other artists (under my art direction). I did the rest: low-poly, maps,
rigging, animation and rendering.
The animation itself is a magic special attack.

02 – Baby Elephant animation done for a game called Rivus. Designs were done by
another artist. I did the low-poly, the maps, the rigging and the trotting
animation.

03 – One of the most laborious animations I’ve ever done (two characters
interacting is always tricky). The task was to make the Elephant help the Ape
get high up. I could have made it simpler but I wanted to make it really
interesting with the spin and throw. Spent lots of time polishing it so it can
work well in the game from all angles.

04 – Robotic walking animation of a quadruped. I did the character and the
animation.

05 – Intro sequence for a game project. Mix of 2D (the girl) and 3D (the rocket)
animation. Animated in Toon Boom and TV Paint with compositing done in After
Effects.

06 – I did a ton of first person animations in my career but they are usually
short and not terribly interesting so I don’t put it on reels. I thought this
one was ok and I wanted to show some FPS stuff.

07 – Facial animations done with Blend Shapes and joints in Maya. The blocks are
very low-res because in the game there’re many of them on the screen at once.
The goal was to make sure expressions still read well.
I also designed and created the block characters.

08 – One of the idle animations for the Ape. Ape was designed and sculpted by
different artists (under my art direction). I did the low-poly, maps, rigging
and animation.

09 – 2D walk cycle done by hand with no reference whatsoever.

10 – Throw animation for a fighting game. I also drew the effect of the hit (but
the dust was animated by someone else).

11 – A pretty tricky animation of tree growing.I did the rigging and devised a
way to animate the growth by scaling joints. It does work in-engine.
The tree was designed under my art direction, but I did everything in 3D
including the sculpt.

12 – Running animation for a game. One of the rare cases where the rigging was
NOT done by me.

13 – Death animation of a game character.
Here I did 100% of everything including the character design.

14 – Character taking damage.

15 – Another idle animation for the Ape.

16 – Tree Monster walking animation.

17 – An animation I did for the Drone character to test my rig and how
expressive it is.
The Drone was designed and sculpted under my supervision. I did the rest
including the low-res, maps, rig and obviously animation.

18 – Death of Tree Monster.
