VIDEO: A RICH HISTORY VIDEO: A RICH HISTORY Print With the stage set following the civil rights movement, the official celebration of Hispanic heritage was spearheaded by Congressman George E. Brown in June of 1968. A representative for the San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles, both of which were heavily influenced by their Hispanic and Latinx communities, Brown sought to recognize the importance of these cultures in American history. It began as a week of commemoration under American President Lyndon B. Johnson, but was expanded under American President Ronald Reagan with Public Law 100-402 on August 17, 1988, to become Hispanic Heritage Month. While other commemorative months begin on the first, Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15th and runs through October 15th to coincide with the independence anniversaries of El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras. It also encapsulates Mexico’s independence day on the 16th and Chile’s on the 18th.
