In 2007 Apple changed the game with the instructions of its smartphone and first
ever mobile operating system. iOS was developed by Apple Inc, for iPhone, iPad
and iPod Touch. The iOS updates were released through iTunes software and since
iOS 5 it has been released over the air software updates. The iOS 5 which was
released on June 2011 did not require a USB connection to iTunes to activate the
iOS device.
iOS had undergone a vast number of upgrades and updates over the past eleven
years of it’s existence. Some features that iOS has brought out are: iMessage,
FaceTime, Apply Play, Siri and the Appstore. Synchronization of data can take
place wirelessly or automatically through iCloud. Through Apple Worldwide
Developers Conference (WWDC) new releases are broadcasted annually, sometimes
with the release of a new model iPhone. There are up to 1.0-12.1 iOS versions
released. iOS 12.1 being the most recent was released on October 30th 2018.

iPhone OS 1
Released date: June 29, 2007
Latest Version & Release Date: 1.1.5, released July 15 2008
At the time this version launched it was not called iOS. One- three versions
Apple referred to it as iPhone OS.
The multitouch screen, visual voicemail, and iTunes integration were indicative
advancement. This iPhone OS lacked many features even though it was considered a
great breakthrough that would be compared with the iPhones in the future,
including the support for third-party apps. Apps that came with the OS included:
mail, notes, camera, photos, calendar, safari, and iPod. iOS version 1.1 was the
first version which was released to the public in September 2007, of the
software compatible with the iPod touch.

iPhone OS 2
Released date: July 11, 2008
Latest Version & Release Date: 2.2.1, released January 27 2009
The change introduced in this version was the App store and its support of
third-party apps. A large number of enhancements were added. The changes
introduced in 5 updates iPhone OS 2.0 included podcast support, public transit
and walking directions in maps.

• Improved maps app

iPhone OS 3
Released date: June 17, 2009
Latest Version & Release Date: 3.3.2, released August 11, 2010
This update came with added features such as copy and paste, spotlight search,
MMS support in the message app and the ability to record videos using the camera
app. This would be the first version of the iOS to support iPad.

iPhone OS 4
Released date: June 22, 2010
Latest Version & Release Date:4.3.5, released July 25, 2011
In this iOS, features that used often by users debuted in various updates
including FaceTime, Multitasking, iBook, organising apps into folders, Personal
Hotspot, AirPlay and AirPrint. iOS 4 was the name iOS itself. Older versions
were named iPhone OS as mentioned above. It was not compatible with the original
or first iPhone or the 1st generation iPod touch.

iPhone OS 5
Released date: October 12, 2011

In this iOS, Apple started following the trend wirelessness and cloud computing,
by introducing new features and platforms. Some new features were:
• iCloud
• iMessage
• Notification Centre
• Wireless syncing and activation

iPhone OS 6
Released date: September 19, 2012
Latest Version & Release Date: 6.1.6, released February 21, 2014
iOS 6 there was a lot of problems especially with Siri and being beaten by
competitors. Hence Apple had to do essential changes.

• Passbook



iPhone OS 7
iOS 7 was announced to Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10
2013.

Latest Version & Release Date: 7.1.2, released June 30, 2014
Seeing that iPhone 4 and iPad 2 do not support Safari iOS 7 has limited support,
because they couldn’t use all features of iOS 7. Users were dissatisfied due to
the fact that things had changed. In iOS 7 a major overhaul of the user
interface, designed to make it more modernised. Apple made improvements to iOS 7
and users become more accustomed to the changes and the complaints were
diminished.

• CarPlay
• Control Centre
• Touch ID

iPhone OS 8
This OS was announced on June 2, 2014 to the Apple WWDC.
Released date: September 17, 2014
Latest Version & Release Date: 8.4.1, released August 13, 2015
Dependable and unchanging operation. Through the changes of the last two
versions now in the past, Apple once again focused on delivering new features
that are significant to users. There was safe contactless payment system Apple
Pay and with the iOS 8.4 update the Apple Music subscription service. There were
sustained enhancements to the iCloud platform and addition of dropbox-like
iCloud drive, library and music.

• Home Kit

iPhone OS 9
Released date: September 16, 2015
Latest Version & Release Date: 9.3.5, released August 25, 2016
The goal of iOS 9 was to set the foundation of the OS for the future the
interface and technical foundation of the iOS after a few years of extensive
changes was not reliable or stable and Apple had to focus on bringing back the
reputation they once had and with iOS 9 they did just that.

• Night Shift
• Low Power Mode
• Public Beta Program

iPhone OS 10
Released date: September 13, 2016
Latest Version & Release Date: 10.3.3, released July 19, 2017
iOS 10 had the ability to exchange and use information in a large diverse
network and customisation. Apps could now communicate directly with each other
on a device, which allowed one app to use some features from another without
opening the second app. In new ways Siri became available to third-party in new
ways. Built in apps were placed in iMessage.

iPhone OS 11

Latest Version & Release Date: 11.4, released May 29, 2018
This iOS was expanded for iPad, iTouch and even versions of iOS 11 could
launched on the Apple watch and Apple TV, but it was originally created for the
iPhone and the interest moved from the iPhone to the iPad. iOS 11 was
strategized to replace laptops for some of its users through the use of the iPad
Pro series model.

iOS 12 updates were upgrades on most used features and adding on wrinkles that
improve how people use their devices. The new features and enhancement that was
added in iOS 12 are not as broad or revolutionized as some of the other updates
to the OS.
