Even though the title has “Preview” in it, this update is being released to everyone today. In addition to a long list of fixes, there is a new media player and notepad. Taskbar changes include adding the clock and date to multiple monitors. When the taskbar is center aligned the weather now appears on the taskbar at the left. An Amazon app store preview app is available in the Microsoft Store. See the above release notes for more details. Here is the blog post that Panos Panay published about this release – Bringing you closer to what you love with new experiences in Windows 11 | Windows Experience Blog. Microsoft News, Updates, Windows 11, Windows News * A SWEETHEART OF A PATCHING MONTH Posted on February 14, 2022 at 02:45 CST by Susan Bradley • Comment in the Forums ISSUE 19.07 • 2022-02-14 PATCH WATCH By Susan Bradley Is Microsoft trying to win back our love? Microsoft may be giving us a Valentine’s Day patching reprieve: this month, we have no critical bugs being patched. Everyone, from home users to small-business users to large enterprises, can take a bit of a breather. The Windows Update releases this month include 70 vulnerabilities, none of which has any known exploits. For businesses, there are no Exchange patches to worry about. I therefore consider this a bit of a “cleanup” month, especially for anyone who skipped the January updates that caused so many side effects and concerns. Updates to .NET include security updates for 5.0.211, 5.0.405, and 6.0.102 — but not for older releases such as 4.8 and other earlier versions. However, you may still see these versions offered to your systems. Read the full story in the AskWoody Plus Newsletter 19.07.0 (2022-02-14). Posted on February 14, 2022 at 02:44 CST by Fred Langa • Comment in the Forums LANGALIST By Fred Langa Previous columns discussed several remote desktops — software that lets you access and use a distant PC just as if you were sitting at its keyboard. Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop was the main focus because it’s much easier to configure and use than Windows’ built-in Remote Desktop Connection. However, if you’ve never used any remote-access tool before, some of the concepts and set-up steps may seem confusing at first. So, here’s additional information and a step-by-step guide to get you up and running with Chrome Remote Desktop! Read the full story in the AskWoody Plus Newsletter 19.07.0 (2022-02-14). Let’s start with Microsoft’s official, full prices for the two main consumer plans for Microsoft 365. Both have the same features for a different number of separate users. In the United States, the Microsoft 365 Personal plan, for one person, has a list price of US$69.99 per year. The Microsoft 365 Family plan, for up to six people, lists for $99.99; each person in the plan gets individual access to all the apps, including 1TB of OneDrive storage. It doesn’t take higher math to see that the Family plan is the best value for more than one person and a great price for a family of four. That’s my idea of fun on any given morning or evening. If I did my searching with my American blinders on, I would miss 80% of the great, open-source software the world’s developers have to offer. I happened to stumble across a talented Chinese developer, who goes by the GitHub handle of “zhongyang219,” and the open source project TrafficMonitor. It’s a small applet that runs in the System Tray and displays your current network transfer speed plus CPU and memory usage. Read the full story in the AskWoody Plus Newsletter 19.07.0 (2022-02-14). Posted on February 12, 2022 at 23:52 CST by Susan Bradley • Comment in the Forums Watch my video here demonstrating my USB monitor Do you need a second monitor – but not one that takes up a lot of room? At home I have a large main monitor and then I purchased a usb connected small flat screen to work as my second monitor. It’s a smaller sized monitor but it allows me to pull a spreadsheet or a web site over to a second monitor. It’s a 15.6 inch Acer that plugs into any USB slot on the computer. The other day I was watching “The business of Tech” podcast by Dave Sobel and he talked about how he worked remotely for a week. He showcased that he used a device to make his iPad a secondary monitor. Called Astropad, it allows you to use your Ipad as a secondary monitor. It works on both Windows and Mac platforms. I had never seen it before. So do you use multiple monitors? I HIGHLY recommend having two displays (or more). At the office everyone has two, several people have three and one person has four. Tech Help Patch Lady Posts * BEWARE OF FIRMWARE UPDATES ON SURFACE BOOK 3 Posted on February 12, 2022 at 20:45 CST by Susan Bradley • Comment in the Forums Barb Bowman passed this along and I’m seeing other posts on the subject. The recent firmware update to Surface Book 3’s are bricking some of the devices. it appears Arnaud van Galen posted in No disks after firmware update “also had this combination of 2 firmware updates (13.101.140.0 and 13.0.1889.2 sounds right) last night, but the machine didn’t boot at all anymore this morning. When I enter the UEFI it says System UEFI = 13.101.140 and Intel Management Engine = 13.0.1889.2 so it does seem that both firmwares got installed correctly. I tried booting from a recovery USB and from inside diskpart it showed that there were no partitions anymore. I tried reinstalling (both with secureboot on and off) but Windows gives Error 0x80300024 and from inside diskpart I get “The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error” after giving a ” list disk, select disk 0, detail disk, clean, create partition efi”” “While not conclusive, it looks like this firmware update and the Hynix drive (HFM256GDGTNG-87A0A) have issues about 50% of the time, rendering the surface useless.” More threads are here: Windows 11 update blue-screened my Surface Book 3 – Microsoft Community Surface Book 3 – The newest update has completely bricked my Surface – Microsoft Community “HoopersX on Twitter: “Hey @karaswisher did you hear about the @microsoft firmware update for their Surface Book 3’s that has completely bricked the devices and they have no answers since it started last Thursday? It kills the BIOS ability to see the drive. So no easy fix in Windows” / Twitter” Windows Patches/Security Patch Lady Posts * APPLE PUSHES FIXES FOR ZERO DAYS Posted on February 10, 2022 at 13:57 CST by Susan Bradley • Comment in the Forums Apple pushed updates for a zero day (CVE-2022-22620) in Webkit that’s been used to attack users. (Plus members only – remember a mere $1 donation gains you access but we are VERY appreciative of any and all donations to the cause and my slightly bleary eyes this time of year for me.) Remember I’m not recommending that you install updates at this time. This is merely to let you know that I’ve updated the list of released updates so you know what to expect to be offered and installed later on. Some notes for the February releases…. .NET does not include security updates so you’ll see monthly rollups and not security only updates. I recommend 21H1 or 21H2 at this time, but not yet Windows 11. As always, the full details of security patches for Windows, Office, Chrome Browser, Firefox Browser, and Chromebook will be discussed in the Plus Newsletter along with several other articles from our expert authors. Thank you all for supporting the cause! Windows Security Master Patch List, Patch Lady Posts * FEBRUARY 2022 PATCH TUESDAY EARLY REPORTS Posted on February 8, 2022 at 12:31 CST by Susan Bradley • Comment in the Forums It’s that time of the month again that we wait on news of update side effects. It’s my philosophy that you shouldn’t rush into anything and patching (with very few exceptions) falls into that as well. This month includes patches for Print spooler (ugh) but it remains to be seen if we’ll see more printer side effects. So ensure you have (for Windows 10/11) start/settings/update and security/advanced options/pause updates/choose the date of February 22 and then sit back and let’s see how February shakes out. In the meantime here’s a Valentine’s day poem from Kelley Robinson: Roses are red Violets are blue Turning on 2FA Is good for me and you Links to keep an eye on for those of you that want to dig through the weeds yourself – but as always we’ll be recapping the side effects in the newsletter and Master patch list so you don’t have to wade through all of the weedy stuff. ABOUT SSDS Posted on February 7, 2022 at 02:45 CST by Ben Myers • Comment in the Forums ISSUE 19.06 • 2022-02-07 HARDWARE By Ben Myers With solid-state drives (SSDs), the SMART ante is raised because an SSD can fail catastrophically — CLUNK! — without warning and with no possibility of recovering data. In my recent article “Hard drives — still pretty S.M.A.R.T.” (AskWoody, 2021-12-27), I was hardly overwhelmed by the treatment of the S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data kept on traditional spinning hard drives by Microsoft Windows and the rest of the industry. But at least, if your computer started to hiccup, you could almost always look at the SMART data to find a possible cause. Read the full story in the AskWoody Plus Newsletter 19.06.0 (2022-02-07). It’s a great way to access your files and apps from anywhere, or to provide long-distance assistance to others.
