RESEARCHERS USE THE EYE AS A WINDOW TO STUDY LIVER HEALTH

KI researchers have developed a method to study liver function and disease
without requiring invasive procedures. After transplanting liver cells into the
eye of mice, the cornea can be used as a window into the body to monitor liver
health over time.

New study

UNINTENTIONAL WEIGHT LOSS ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASED RISK OF CANCER

Recent weight loss is associated with an increased risk of a cancer diagnosis in
the coming year, according to a new study. The researchers behind the study urge
healthcare professionals and the public to be vigilant about sudden and
unintentional weight loss.

New study

INHERITED GENETIC MUTATIONS CAN PREDICT INTERVAL BREAST CANCER

Mutations in five known breast cancer genes can predict which women will be
affected by interval breast cancer, an aggressive cancer type diagnosed between
routine screenings. The findings can contribute to more tailored screening
programs.

MULTIPLE HEALTH RISKS SHORTEN LIFE FOR PEOPLE WITH OCD

People with OCD die on average nine years earlier than others. Now, a registry
study spanning 40 years reveals the diseases and health risks behind these grim
statistics.

CAN AN ANTI-HIV DRUG REDUCE THE RISK OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE IN WOMEN?

WHY BRAIN WAVES MAKE US FAIR TO OTHERS

Whenever we make choices in a social setting about how much we want to share
with others we must navigate between our own selfish interests and social norms
for fairness. But how fair are we truly? KI-researcher Patricia Christian
explains why no one takes the last piece of cake.

THE CURIOUS LINK BETWEEN ANIMAL HIBERNATION AND AGEING

When the cold and dark winter is setting in, some of us envy animals that can
hibernate. This long, deep rest is an example of how nature develops clever
solution to difficult problems – and is something that science can learn from,
according to KI researcher Peter Stenvinkel.

HIV DRUGS MIGHT HELP PREVENT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

In a new study, researchers identified over 29,000 people with HIV and followed
them for an average of nearly ten years. Over this period, only 14 HIV-positive
people developed MS, which was 47% fewer cases than expected based on numbers in
the general population.

MICROSCOPIC COLITIS EXPLAINED – AND WHY IT’S OFTEN MISTAKEN FOR IBS

If you have a bad case of the runs that doesn´t go away, the problem might be
microscopic colitis: A condition that causes chronic diarrhoea and inflammation
of the large intestine, only visible through a microscope. KI researcher David
Bergman explains why a proper diagnose and treatment can make a huge difference
for people with the condition.

BACTERIAL MENINGITIS DAMAGES ONE IN THREE CHILDREN FOR LIFE

One in three children who suffer from bacterial meningitis live with permanent
neurological disabilities due to the infection. This is according to a new
epidemiological study.

HEALTHCARE MINISTER VISITS KI

Minister for Health Care Acko Ankarberg Johansson had a busy schedule when she
visited Karolinska Institutet, where she spent an afternoon discussing research
conditions and how to create sustainable infrastructures that can increase the
interaction between education, research, development and healthcare today and
tomorrow.

DIABETES DRUG MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF SEVERE LIVER DISEASE

Drugs known as GLP1 agonists are associated with a reduced risk of developing
cirrhosis and liver cancer in people with type 2 diabetes and chronic liver
disease, according to a new study published in Gut.

GRANTS, PRIZES AND DONATIONS

ERC PROOF OF CONCEPT TO PROFESSOR PER-OLOF BERGGREN

Professor Per-Olof Berggren has been awarded a ERC Proof of Concept grant by the
European Research Council (ERC). The funding will be used to advance a
technology in which islets of Langerhans are transplanted into the anterior
chamber of the eye and employed as a screening tool to identify novel
pharmaceutical treatments for diabetes.

GENEROUS DONATION TO EYE RESEARCH AT KI

The Ulla and Ingemar Dahlberg Foundation has decided to donate SEK 50 million to
Karolinska Institutet. The grant will be used for a new professorship in vision
science with a focus on ocular neurobiology.

TWO KI RESEARCHERS ARE AWARDED DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR GRANTS

Professor Gonçalo Castelo-Branco and professor Jonas Frisén, Karolinska
Institutet, are awarded distinguished professor grants from the Swedish Research
Council, totalling just over SEK 62 million for the years 2024-31.

EXTRA GRANTS FROM THE SWEDISH CANCER SOCIETY TO KI FOR CLINICAL STUDIES

In clinical studies, new methods and treatments are tested on humans under
controlled conditions. However, clinical treatment studies are often very
expensive to carry out. The Swedish Cancer Society has now decided on an extra
allocation of grants to ten researchers for clinical studies. Six of these are
researchers at Karolinska Institutet.

KI RESEARCHERS AWARDED OVER SEK 35 MILLION BY THE SWEDISH CHILDHOOD CANCER FUND

The Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund's allocation reflects the needs that exist in
areas such as new technology and precision medicines. This year's call for
proposals means that SEK 125 million will be allocated to 62 projects in the
field of childhood cancer, of which SEK 35,400,000 will go to researchers at
Karolinska Institutet.

NEW MRI SCANNER IN HUDDINGE OPENS UP NEW OPPORTUNITIES

On Tuesday 28 November, a new laboratory for MRI examinations was inaugurated at
Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge. The purchase of a new MRI scanner,
following a donation from the Erling Persson Foundation, creates new
opportunities for both doctors and researchers.

KI RESEARCHERS ANDERS KVANTA AND FREDRIK LANNER AWARDED A SEK 10 MILLION GRANT

KI researchers Anders Kvanta and Fredrik Lanner have been awarded a grant of SEK
10 million from the Erling-Persson Foundation for a clinical phase 1 trial on
macular degeneration, a common age-related eye disease. By transplanting retinal
cells from embryonic stem cells, the researchers hope to curb any further loss
of vision and ultimately recover lost sight.

New study

DNA CONSTRUCTION LED TO UNEXPECTED DISCOVERY OF IMPORTANT CELL FUNCTION

KI researchers have used DNA origami, the art of folding DNA into desired
structures, to show how an important cell receptor can be activated in a
previously unknown way. The result opens new avenues for understanding how the
Notch signalling pathway works and how it is involved in several serious
diseases.

RESEARCHERS URGE CAUTION IN CO-PRESCRIBING POTENCY DRUGS AND NITRATES

Co-prescribing potency drugs such as Viagra and organic nitrates for angina is

LONG LIVE THE LIVER!

Many Swedes live with fatty liver – and it doesn’t have to be dangerous. But for
some, it kicks off a course of disease in which persistent inflammation leads to
cirrhosis. Medicinsk Vetenskap has talked to researchers who look after the
liver – the behemoth of the belly that has a somewhat magical ability to
recover, along with enormous overcapacity.
