“As a child, I wished for a robot that would explain others’ emotions to me”
says Sharifa Alghowinem. Today, the Media Lab researcher is working on personal
robot technology that explains emotions in English and Arabic.

Jackson Jewett wants to shrink the construction industry’s huge carbon footprint
by reducing the amount of concrete it uses. The CEE PhD student is developing
algorithms that can be used to design large structures, such as buildings or
bridges, with less material.

ALUMNI IN ACTION

David Lucsko PhD ’05 has been into cars for as long as he can remember,
including work to restore old Volkswagens. “There’s a tremendous rush of putting
something back together and turning the key and it actually works,” he says.

RESEARCH NEWS

In experiments aboard the International Space Station, a surface treatment
developed by MIT engineers prevented the growth of microbial biofilms. These
films can damage equipment and potentially cause illness. “It’s a very important
problem,” says Kripa Varanasi.

CLIMATE ACTION

How are cities managing record-setting temperatures? David Hsu explains what
municipal governments are doing as climate change accelerates. “The urgent
message is: We shouldn’t accept the status quo,” he notes.

AROUND CAMPUS

The academic year has begun, but MIT’s campus does not come to life on its own.
The flurry of activity on campus this week was preceded by a lot of hard work by
staff members committed to getting the year off to a seamless start.
