WHAT IS EMBEDDED SYSTEMS?

OVERVIEW


EMBEDDED SYSTEMS ARE COMPUTER SYSTEMS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO PERFORM SPECIFIC
FUNCTIONS WITHIN LARGER SYSTEMS, OFTEN WITH REAL-TIME CONSTRAINTS. THEY ARE
BUILT USING A COMBINATION OF HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE COMPONENTS THAT ARE TIGHTLY
INTEGRATED TO PERFORM A SPECIFIC TASK OR SET OF TASKS.

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CAN BE FOUND IN A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS, FROM CONSUMER
ELECTRONICS SUCH AS SMARTPHONES, SMART TVS, AND WEARABLE DEVICES, TO INDUSTRIAL
AUTOMATION SYSTEMS, MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, AND AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEMS.
THESE SYSTEMS TYPICALLY CONSIST OF A MICROCONTROLLER OR MICROPROCESSOR, WHICH
SERVES AS THE BRAIN OF THE SYSTEM AND RUNS THE SOFTWARE THAT CONTROLS THE
SYSTEM'S BEHAVIOR. OTHER HARDWARE COMPONENTS, SUCH AS SENSORS, ACTUATORS, AND
COMMUNICATION INTERFACES, ARE USED TO INTERFACE WITH THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT
AND TO EXCHANGE DATA WITH OTHER SYSTEMS.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMBEDDED SYSTEMS REQUIRES A UNIQUE SET OF SKILLS AND
EXPERTISE, AS THE DESIGNER MUST HAVE A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF BOTH HARDWARE AND
SOFTWARE DESIGN. AS TECHNOLOGY CONTINUES TO EVOLVE, EMBEDDED SYSTEMS WILL
CONTINUE TO PLAY AN INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR DAILY LIVES.

PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) DESIGN BRINGS YOUR ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS TO LIFE IN
THE PHYSICAL FORM. USING LAYOUT SOFTWARE, THE PCB DESIGN PROCESS COMBINES
COMPONENT PLACEMENT AND ROUTING TO DEFINE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIVITY ON A
MANUFACTURED CIRCUIT BOARD.

 

THE MOST VITAL ELEMENT IN ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS AND EQUIPMENT IS THE PRINTED
